Everyday I think about Gaza

When I go to bed, warm and comfortable. I think about the freezing people in tents who barely have scraps to keep them alive

When I take a shower, unafraid of the water stopping or going cold. I think of the people in gaza who havent showered for months and barely have clean drinking water.

When I watch my brother play with his race cars and my sister with her dolls, I think about the children, who despite all their hardships still find ways to smile and play

When we sit down to eat dinner, never having to fear food on the table the next day. I think about the starving mothers who can’t feed her children and the older siblings walking miles to feed his siblings. I think about the people who died of starvation. I think about the people of gaza

When I go to my school where my friends chat and my teachers teach, I think about the universities demolished and the aspiring students who are no more

When my parents leave for a few hours and I take care of my siblings, I know they’ll be back in a while to take over. But what about the teenagers turned parents? What about the orphans caring for toddlers? What about the children in gaza

Every day I think about the hopeful people of Palestine. The brave people of Palestine. The relentless people of Palestine. The stubborn and beautiful people of Palestine.

When I look at my house, the buildings, the sky, the water, my family, the lights, the sun, the internet, the food, my school, my friends, the children, the parks, the birds, the cats, the toy stores, the supermarkets, the bustling crowds, the heavy traffic

my world so full of life…

I think about Gaza

To his left is I2em, who is looking away, lost in thought. Behind all of them, in the top middle, is Shades, staring at the viewer and holding up his scarred arm.

Some details, such as the first three’s arms, and Shades’ head are poking out of the canvas. /End ID]

I drew this one in record time, the whole thing took me only 7 hours! High quality version under the cut

Most computer operating systems use Unix, which was launched in 1971 with t.he epoch date of midnight on January 1, 1970 as 1. Therefore zero is one second behind that date: December 31, 1969. Hey guys so if anyone is interested in donating for the Palestinian cause as all of you know Israel has cut off the internet on Gaza for the past few days, Palestinians sometimes get internet connections & sometimes they don’t.

Elon Musk won’t give Palestinians Starlink internet like he did with Ukraine & Taiwan (I won’t get into this), Egyptian communication companies are trying their best at putting towers on the borders but still too far away from the Palestinians to get connection let alone Israel can bomb them whenever they want and call it a mistake “wink wink”.

So a group of Egyptians have decided to gather E-sims for Palestinians, I honestly don’t know how E-sims work cause we don’t use them here in Egypt but the group does, one of them is the owner of the twitter account in this post Merna El Helbawi, she’s an Egyptian writer & also one of the people who went to the borders to urge aid to pass to Palestine.

At the moment her & others are trying to gather E-sims for Palestinians, they’re 100% given to Palestinians for free, if you can participate, even with one E-sim, you would’ve done your part in helping Palestinians document to the world the evil of Israel & also connected displaced family members with eachothers.

Hope you guys can help.

Also this is how E-sims work since most of us in the middle east are discovering them now, this was posted by Speak Now a feminist entity in Egypt who are also helping in the gathering of the E-sims.

An important update:

If anybody knows any other way we can give connection to Palestinians now that we can’t give new E-sims, you’re very welcome to help.

They’re using Simly and another E-sim till now as Nomad stopped activating in Palestine.

some nerd hired straight out of college: *types rapidly* she’s definitely got tumblr open on her laptop

the nsa agent, softly: so why is she looking at it on her phone…..

My husband and myself have served in the military. When we call home from overseas, our lines are monitored and on a short delay so no sensitive information is revealed. The line will just go dead if you say something you’re not supposed to.

Now, these calls are monitored by a department in the military called Signal corps. When we’d talk on my husband’s last deployment, we had a running joke that we said hi to “Signal Guy Fred.”

So this continued for his entire 12 month deployment, and we made sure we said hi or bye to “Signal Guy Fred” every phone call. On his final phone call before returning home we made sure to thank “Signal Guy Fred” for his time and wish him farewell.

So, before I disconnect the call, I wish “Fred” the best and thank him for his service. My phone was on speaker mode (I was cooking dinner) and my finger was hovering over the end call button when I hear the softest little, “My name’s Jason.”

Israeli forces have withheld the bodies of at least 31 Palestinian children since June 2016, according to documentation collected by Defense for Children International - Palestine (DCIP). Four of the children’s bodies have since been released to their families, while 27 Palestinian children’s bodies remain withheld by Israeli authorities.

The rest remain in Israeli authorities’ custody, some for years, so their families are unable to lay their children to rest. That’s because depraved indifference to Palestinian life, even in death, is Israeli state policy.

Explanation:

>Japan bombs Pearl Harbor which brings America into World War II

>The draft for WWII creates a labor shortage in the US

>Because of the labor shortage, companies start significantly raising wages.

>FDR is worried that if wages go up too fast it could create runaway inflation, so he signs an executive order creating the National War Labor Board, which standardized salaries during the war in order to stabilize prices.

>Companies wanted a way to compete for talent in a limited labor pool despite not being able to offer higher salaries, so they started offering benefits packages to attract workers, the cornerstone of which was health insurance

>After the war, companies didn’t want to give up their role in providing health insurance because it served them well in terms of both recruiting and retention (i.e. you’re less likely to quit your job if it means losing your health insurance)

>This model becomes increasingly common across the US to the point where private health insurance companies are paying for the majority of healthcare expenses in the US

>Because the majority of healthcare costs were being paid by insurance companies rather than the people receiving care, hospitals began massively inflating the sticker price of their services with the expectation that the insurance company would negotiate those numbers down (as private insurance companies are want to do)

>Insurance companies take advantage of the increase in sticker prices by increasing premiums and passing off more of their costs to the consumer while continuing to negotiate down the actual price paid to hospitals

>This cycle repeats until the average hospital bill is completely divorced from any of the actual costs of the service

>In 2024 the average cost of giving birth in America is over $18,000

for anyone too young to know this: watching The Truman Show is a vastly different experience now, compared to how it was before youtube and social media influencers became normal

before it was like, “what a horrifying thing to do to a human being! to take away their autonomy and privacy, all for the sake of profits! to create fake scenarios for them to react to, just to retain viewership! to ruin their happiness just so some corporate entity could harvest money from their very humanity! how could anyone do something so evil?”

and now it’s like, “ah, yeah. this is still deeply fucked up, but it’s pretty much what every influencer has been doing to their kids for a decade now. probably bad that we’ve normalized this experience”

You know what should make you mad? The government spending your tax dollars to fund wars and genocides. Unfortunately people will be silent on that but mad if the money goes to help someone in need. Funny how that works.

I don’t know, I’d rather someone “steal” tax dollars to pay rent and groceries and have some left to buy something nice instead of it going to buy the latest military technology and paying people to go to another country to kill and subjugate them.

also i love that the phrase “piss on the poor” is functionally an effective shorthand on here for “someone has a lack of reading comprehension”. wonder how long it will be before the knowledge that it is an intentional misapprehension of the phrase “piss poor” disappears and we get a Reader who says. the phrase piss on the poor is so cruel we should say something else

based on the notes of this post, which has gotten several thousand in the last day or so, we have in fact already reached this point

“Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers.”

(Incidentally, “piss poor” is itself taken from the phrase “not a pot to piss in”, which is itself a shortening of “not a pot to piss in or a window to throw it from”, in reference to those so poor that they had neither home nor chamberpot. Isn’t language fun?)

For those in the notes wondering, it’s a reference to this ancient post:

Wow, 2012.

[ID: screenshot of a tumblr post. OP by @drakensberg-blog dated Nov 28, 2012 that reads “The reading comprehension and overall common sense on this website is piss poor.” There is a reblog with comment by @poupon attached from the same date that reads “how dare you say we piss on the poor.” Tags at the bottom of the post read “#CLASS WARFARE #CLASS WATERSPORTSFARE #tumblr” /end ID]

Really recommend doing a donation match to anyone who’s looking to donate but wants to double the proceedings along the way. I did one in January and we raised more than double what I would’ve donated by myself. Send me an ask if you want to bring more attention to your donation match—I’d be happy to boost it.

Just a note tho that I’m not a fan of any donations going to third parties. I’d prefer if your donation match went to reputable sources like PCRF, UNRWA, eSIMs etc etc just to minimize any possible fraud (a lot of scam has been going around lately). Otherwise I really love the idea of donation matches & would love to support anyone who’d like to do one 🤍

Today I had to get a private patdown by two TSA agents because my incontinence pad set off their screening devices

Out trans people have talked a lot about how the screening devices stigmatize trans and intersex people, when they work by comparing the body being examined to the “normal” male or “normal” female body. But there’s also something to be said about the way that that “normal” body is presumed able bodied and neurotypical. My ear defenders have to come off before I go through. People with mobility aids and prosthetics have to either leave their aids or be subjected to a full body pat down. When they ask “do you have any metal in your body?” They are asking about medical devices; the system is designed on the assumption that people lack metal implants or bone replacements. Anything that deviates from the cisgender, not intersex, and abled norm is seen as an aberration, and our bodies are treated as a threat and as public curiosities

homunculus-argument:

Another worldbuilding application of the “two layer rule”: To create a culture while avoiding The Planet Of Hats (the thing where a people only have one thing going for them, like “everyone wears a silly hat”): You only need two hats.

Try picking two random flat culture ideas and combine them, see how they interact. Let’s say taking the Proud Warrior Race - people who are all about glory in battle and feats of strength, whose songs and ballads are about heroes in battle and whose education consists of combat and military tactics. Throw in another element: Living in diaspora. Suddenly you’ve got a whole more interesting dynamic going on - how did a people like this end up cast out of their old native land? How do they feel about it? How do they make a living now - as guards, mercenaries? How do their non-combatants live? Were they always warrior people, or did they become fighters out of necessity to fend for themselves in the lands of strangers? How do the peoples of these lands regard them?

Like I’m not shitting, it’s literally that easy. You can avoid writing an one-dimensional culture just by adding another equally flat element, and the third dimension appears on its own just like that. And while one of the features can be location/climate, you can also combine two of those with each other.

Let’s take a pretty standard Fantasy Race Biome: The forest people. Their job is the forest. They live there, hunt there, forage there, they have an obnoxious amount of sayings that somehow refer to trees, woods, or forests. Very high chance of being elves. And then a second common stock Fantasy Biome People: The Grim Cold North. Everything is bleak and grim up there. People are hardy and harsh, “frostbite because the climate hates you” and “being stabbed because your neighbour hates you” are the most common causes of death. People are either completely humourless or have a horrifyingly dark, morbid sense of humour. They might find it funny that you genuinely can’t tell which one.

Now combine them: Grim Cold Bleak Forest People. The summer lasts about 15 minutes and these people know every single type of berry, mushroom and herb that’s edible in any fathomable way. You’re not sure if they’re joking about occasionally resorting to eating tree bark to survive the long dark winter. Not a warrior people, but very skilled in disappearing into the forest and picking off would-be invaders one by one. Once they fuck off into the woods you won’t find them unless they want to be found.

You know, Finland.

I will use this!
