i couldn’t stand her & dreaded the moment she walked in the door, until i stopped one day & went “wow, to walk around feeling unhappy enough to treat people so horribly every day. what a difficult way to live.”
and so my tactics changed. i made a point to be extra kind & friendly to her. she changed her hair color one day & when i complimented her on it, she was very caught off guard & said “oh, thank you. my whole life i’ve thought i was ugly.”
now we’re at the point where she shows me pictures of watercolor paintings she made & says hi when she walks in the door. she’s not my favorite patron, but she’s perfectly okay. most unpleasant people aren’t inherently rotten, they’re just unhappy & coping with it poorly
assume people are always doing their best, even if their best happens to fall a bit short. assume good intentions

i am not happy with our choices this election. But you should know that the reason he’s the first president to “refuse” a cognitive test is because one isn’t included in the presidential physical exam in the first place.
There was a petition of doctors who wanted Trump’s cognitive function tested during his physical exam, and everybody involved on the republican side said no, and then Trump himself actually insisted he did take one in a fit of ego. He was, as far as i can tell, the first president to ever take one while in office.
At his request for the cognitive testing, Trump’s doctor administered the Montreal Cognitive Assessment which is like 5 questions and has not been proven to be an accurate test of much at all. It’s a lot like when you hit your head and they ask you the date and your name and stuff – answering correctly in no way means you don’t have a head injury or concussion or whatever, it’s just a couple of first step questions. Then Trump said a lot of lies and bullshit about his “cognitive test”
Now republicans and right leaning publications are spreading shit like this. Biden didn’t “refuse” a cognitive test, his aides confirmed that, as usual, a cognitive test is not included during the president’s doctor visit.
again, i think our choices are shit this election, i don’t like how old Biden is, and i think the way our first-past-the-poll voting system automatically results in an extremist two party system fronting candidates that the majority of the country doesn’t like is some fucked up bullshit

tbh the rat balls article confirms a lot of what i worry about these days which is that no one is actually reading anything. people are just mashing “ok” on things and don’t actually care. there’s no actual quality control because to turn things down for their quality means turning down money for a submission
a couple years ago I found a guy who had constructed an elaborate alternate universe for his fetish in which American women had the largest breasts in the world and all other women on earth desperately hated American women for their huge boobs and wore padded bras to be more like them and all men on earth agreed American women were superior and more beautiful than any others. he had written at least one “scientific” PDF with carefully constructed fake graphs and photos and 3d models “proving” that American women had the largest breasts in the world (this isn’t true IRL btw if that wasn’t clear) and then made a fake website for the fake university that published the paper with fake profiles of the fake researchers who did the fake research. he retouched historical photographs of American celebrities to make their boobs bigger, as “evidence”. there were a half dozen fraudulent websites involved and I think two or more papers. he also created fake user profiles on Reddit etc to spread around his “data”, including of course blond American milfs wearing American flag clothing, who would post about how American women have the largest breasts in the world and then link to his website and papers as “citations”.
well, in probing the socket on this one I found out his papers and websites had been cited not only by actual journalists but also other scientific papers, the authors of which apparently didn’t actually read any of them but had inadvertantly hard coded him into the scientific literature by citing their own, legitimate research with fraudulent fetish worldbuilding by an insane divorced Finnish man who was at one time the Veterinary General of Finland.
I blew this up in a huge thread on Twitter and he must have checked his referral logs (because of course he would) because he tried to send me an international cease and desist and deleted a bunch of his websites in a panic.
my team emailed some of the people who “cited” his work and didn’t hear back. so no, nobody is reading shit and no one cares about anything lmfao

Masha saw a kitten that was on its own, no mommy, no other kittens to cuddle with. She instinctively knew that was a cold kitten. She knew that a kitten alone on a cold night was very likely to die. Because a kitten would have died too.
So, all she was doing was what any good colony member does - protecting the abandoned kitten. Then when the abandoned kitten’s mommy didn’t come back, she called the rest of the colony for help.
People have this bizarre idea that housecats don’t have a social sense. They do, and it saved this kid’s life. And possibly Masha’s too, as life on the streets is dangerous for a kitty.
We say “good dog” all the time, but Masha was being a very, very good cat…not just by human moral standards but by feline ones.
