I really hate even engaging with this argument because it almost gives it legitimacy. Israelis voted in a genocidal government - that doesn’t mean that they could be genocided.
When the Nazi government was voted into Germany and started their genocide if France in retaliation had decided to genocide all Germans that wouldn’t be acceptable either.
It doesn’t matter who voted for what, it doesn’t matter who was old enough at the time. What matters is that it is Never Ever acceptable to mass kill families, children, civilians, destroy infrastructure and carpet bomb homes.
Let’s stop engaging with these manufacturing consent arguments and start calling them out for what they are: justifications for genocide.

My thinking was: factual rebuttals are faster than ethical rebuttals. “They voted for Hamas!” “No, that’s false.” There’s no comeback to that.
Ethical rebuttals are a better way, because they help people learn how to be a better person. But they’re difficult and some people mentally filter them out, automatically.

For those that don’t know, there’s a semi-famous story of a wildlife photographer who had her camera stolen by some monkeys she was taking pictures of. When she got her camera back, she discovered one of the monkeys had taken a selfie, and she published the image in a journal as a “look what happened” kind of story. PETA, being the insufferable waste they are, took it upon themselves to sue the photographer, claiming that because the Monkey took the picture, the monkey owns the copyright and thus the photographer was not allowed to publish it. The courts ruled this whole thing stupid and that now art can only be considered protected by copywrite if it was made by a human. So, this “only made by humans” ruling could easily apply to AI as well, meaning Hollywood is gonna screw themselves over if they try to replace their writers with bots.

heres my advice to any followers i have who are young. Don’t delete things when you think you’ve outgrown them or they’re cringy. If you make youtube videos just private them don’t delete them. Save your files, you can bury them in multiple sub-folders if you think they’re cringe now but DON’T DELETE THEM! It doesn’t feel like it now but years in the future you will look back fondly at who you were and wish you still had those things.
Just making this post to say that I read @photomatt ’s statement yesterday and it was horrible. I won’t be reblogging it because I try to not put hate reblogs and stuff in my blog and I don’t like getting involved in drama, but I just wanted to point out something interesting
For Matt, predstrogen “threatening” him was a big enough issue that in the statement, he said that he was working with law enforcement for harassment. But of course, the fact that the threat made him feel unsafe, which it does seem to have, I want to absolutely clear that I am not denying that it might have made Matt feel unsafe, but that is only a problem because he is a white cishetallo male. Trans women on the Internet as whole, including Tumblr, are never safe, and yet Matt refuses to address this very problem. Why when Matt’s safety is even seemingly under threat (and whether it even counts as a threat in beyond dubious, the “threat” was not realistic or very threatening), does he get to call the police, but when predstrogen’s safety is actually under threat, Matt and Tumblr refuse to do anything? The clear answer would be that Matt thinks something is different about this situation, but every variable I can think of actually makes this worse for this case with Matt compared to trans women generally. The threat was not credible, it does not serve to further some larger oppressive structure, like nothing here is even comparable. This leaves the only real interpretation of Tumblr’s and Matt’s actions being that they value the safety of a white cishetallo male over that of a trans woman.
At the same time, threatening (diction intentional) to get law enforcement involved is itself an act of violence. And a much greater one given how much more credible it is, and how much power Matt specifically has. But Matt doesn’t seem to recognize this. He doesn’t see police violence as violence because he’s a sheltered cishetallo rich white male. He simply doesn’t have the experience of being illegal like many of us queer people (and sex workers and black people and homeless people and a bunch of other people the ruling class don’t like) do, of what happens when the police are called on you. To him the police are protectors, but to most, they’re oppressors. You can learn this perspective, I even have, I’ve never been arrested, but it seems Matt doesn’t care to do so.
This is to say nothing of why predstrogen was banned originally or anything else, but this is the part I thought I had a comment on.

it’s also worth noting that installing touch screens instead of things like buttons and dials makes them less accessible.
blind/visually impaired people often rely on being able to feel those buttons and dials. most prosthetics aren’t designed to activate capacitive touchscreens. folks with any variety of conditions may find it much easier to interact with physical input like buttons and dials than a touchscreen.
disabled people are constantly left out when it comes to product design, and the trend of implementing touchscreens where buttons would work just as well (if not better) is a prime example.

there are ones that were truly unique, like Polar Tropical Forests and Fern Prairies, that we just could not have today
but there were ones that have equivalents to today, as well, like the first savannahs and steppes of the Miocene - they just have earlier versions of the plants and animals
there were so many because there are so many today, and each one had its own flora and fauna and was glorious

the bizarre Volcanic Lake Forests of the Jehol Biota

Grass is a relatively recent thing
it first evolved in the latest Cretaceous, but it didn’t actually take over everywhere until the Miocene, when grasses that process light differently (look up C3 vs C4 photosynthesis) evolved and just took the fuck over the planet
before then, other plants formed the low ground cover over the earth, and in many places those plants were ferns - spread all over the ground and covering it, much like grass, but significantly less dense. Dirt would have been much more common everywhere.
This is why I am begging every single game developer to remember that grass is not a neutral ground cover
My favorite extinct ecosystem, if it counts while being as physically tiny as it was, is the floating logs that existed in the ocean between the first appearance of woody trees and the first appearance of organisms that could break down wood - floating reefs of a sort, trailing enormous filter-feeding crinoids below them. The baleen whales of their time

Speaking of reefs, we’re so used to rocky or coral reefs in the moderns world but there have been so many different reefs throughout prehistory that were made of things that straight up don’t exist any more!
Like the reefs of the late Devonian, which were made of stromatoporoids, which may have resembled corals but were actually a highly diverse extinct group of sponges!
This is one of my own reconstructions of a stromatoporoid reef off the coast of Devonian Australia (plus anachronistic underwater baited camera):
The Cretaceous also had some wild extinct reefs which are known as carbonate reefs and were dominated by a group of bivalve molluscs called rudists!
Scale tree swamps are the only one of these I know anything about and they were SO WEIRD. There’s definitely some controversy about how they functioned cause these things are hard to work out from fossils, but the current thinking is that these trees shot up to around 100 feet tall in 10-15 years, grew more tightly packed together than basically any modern forest, produced spores one time and then promptly keeled over and died. Forests just do not work like this anymore! It’s not just different types of trees, it’s a whole *different type of forest* that has gone extinct! Different nutrient cycling, different natural rhythms, different everything!
Even today there are all kinds of niche hyperlocal ecosystems that function in their own distinct ways - shale barrens, waxcap grasslands, cataract bogs. What else have we just never seen??
