They probably won’t have anything specific to share either, since they left the company weeks ago too. That being said:

Tumblr’s CEO has been absurdly enthusiastic (comically, even) about AI, and is a big fan of LLMs and ‘AI’ companies.
A deal with midjourney could solve tumblr financial issues (not the same company, but openAi is paying up to 5 million/year to news companies to use their content as training data… tumblr generates several orders of magnitude more content than any newspaper or any media company and it only would need a 20 to 30 million per year deal to be profitable)
So I don’t have any extra info yet, but I’m keeping my ears open.
And I just got confirmation from a second ex-colleague that a deal with midjourney has been brewing since months ago. Not any extra details, just that’s a real thing.
Shit, I don’t see any way for this to happen that doesn’t make it an apocalyptic event the size of the porn ban. Fuck.
Even if you don’t post your own art anymore, go back to your old stuff and watermark it.
Do it ASAP, before the deal goes through and the scraping begins.
This will not only protect your art, but has the opportunity to fuck over this deal on a pretty large scale. The more of these posts that are glazed or poisoned, the less valuable this deal becomes for tumblr and midjourney.

Im gonna add this to every post about this i see im never gonna shut up about it. This will get people killed. This will ruin lives. More people live in hiding than you think. I was at a workshop once and we got talking (off-topic) about how fucked up it is that people do this. And because we were all teachers, we started talking about fucked up it is that people do this in schools. Like our principal will take photos and videos of everything that goes down at the school and post it on fb, with students’ whole faces in it and everything. And most people don’t even question it. But I was (and remain) shocked that that’s allowed, or that anyone responsible for these kids’ safety would do that.
And one of the guys in the workshop spoke up. He teaches in maximum security prisons. Angering or offending the wrong person could mean real danger for him and his family. For this reason, he keeps very private. He doesn’t tell his students any personal details about him, and keeps himself and his family very low-key on social media, and sets really clear boundaries around sharing his and his family’s info. So imagine his surprise to go online one day and see that his young son’s elementary school had publicly posted a photo with his son’s face, full name, and location. The school knew the family’s situation, and this guy had specifically told the school not to share anything about his son on social media for safety reasons. But it’s just so normal to share photos of people without their consent that nobody even bothered to consider that they may be crossing boundaries.
People are allowed all kinds of reasons for not wanting their face or actions online. People are entitled to decide for themselves whether they appear on the internet, and to control what and where and in what context they are shared. Just go home and tell the silly story of that person mysteriously buying a single banana at the grocery store - no need to become a mass-surveillance network about it ffs. You never know who you are putting in danger.
I really really hate those people who would see like someone cleaning their glasses and be like “bro Ong fr people who wear glasses are such losers 💀 my homie chose this life”. All people have a tendency to be unconsciously biased toward seeing trans women as untrustworthy, unsafe, lacking vulnerability, the problem to be solved rather than a person to be taken care of. And this is not less true in trans and queer and feminist communities. It’s just more unconscious, and more propped up with social justice, feminism, queer lib, leftist, and anti-oppression beliefs. This book is talking about this in context to a physical public situation of harassment, but this is true of social conflicts too, including on social media, in friend groups, in all kinds of situations. The unconscious bias also gets taken advantage of by people who know what they’re doing and hide behind that bias to make their mistreatment of transfems seem reasonable—again, often supported with social justice and anti-oppression rhetoric. TERFs aren’t the only people who do this! It felt so incredible to see this spelled out in print, plain as day, an actual book calling out a real thing I’ve experience more times than I can count, that all transfems I know go through, and that I still feel crazy for seeing because there’s so much gaslighting about it. You know how when you KNOW something is real, but you feel defensive about that knowledge, like you have to be ready to hold onto it, and then you see something confirming that knowledge for you in no uncertain terms and it feels like “wow maybe I wasn’t crazy all this time!” That’s how I felt seeing this.

every special ed program i was in had some kind of system where your behavior was graded on a little sheet with different scores in different categories. its one of those things that i was shocked to eventually discover was actually specifically a special ed thing. getting a good grade in behavior.
one of the more insidious ones came later in my life, when i was 9 or so, there was the system where in addition to being graded on different things like “respect” and “self control” you could also earn “contracts” if you behaved badly, like they’d give you a slip of paper where u write down what you did wrong and what you can do better next time & then the contract is Active for a certain period where u lose some privileges, i forget exactly what. i remember a teacher came in & told my class that our group (the youngest group, i might add) had the most active contracts out of any of the groups and we needed to shape up. i didn’t have any contracts at the time, i actually went a really long time without earning one, but then they just kinda started happening? like things would “go wrong” in ways that felt outside of my control, and it just kept getting worse and worse until i was the biggest problem child in the program. i remember all the worst most traumatizing meltdowns that left me injured and shell shocked were after i felt like i’d figured out how to be a good dog. i dont think i actually ever learned how to behave.
i reread this article at least once a week because it feels like i’m being heard for the first time in more ways than was probably intended.
