like every other game dev born after 1985 i’ve had thoughts of making my own Pokemon-like and the main roadblock for me has been: how do i come up with a typing system that doesn’t just mimic Pokemon’s? and the answer is you don’t come up with a system. maybe there’s types but they’re completely ad-hoc - you could even have one-off types just for one specific mon or move if you want. the flexibility is dizzying; you can add dozens or hundreds of new types whenever. sound type, radiation type, magic type. go wild! you begin to run into combinatorial explosion. strengths and weaknesses grow more nonsensical as you start skipping over most of your ever-growing type chart anytime you add a new one. after all, who cares whether food-type mons are weak or strong versus electricity? they just need to be weak against munch-type attacks, and maybe mold-type too. to make full use of the increasingly-specific types you’ve been coming up with, some of your mons end up with 5 or 10 types. your spidershark monster is, at the very least, a spider, shark, swim, beast, and bug type. overlaps happen; redundancies crop up. music type, nuclear type, mystic type. have you done those before? don’t worry about it. 3 years into development you cannot imagine having ever hated anyone as much as you hate yourself

this is not a cautionary tale. i think everyone should do this

ah fuck!!! ah goddammit!!! fuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PSA: Cohost sucks too!

TW: bestiality, incest, pedophilia, suicide, zoophilia

Tumblr staff is antiblack and transmisogynistic but Cohost isn’t a better option. Cohost’s team includes former Discord moderator Kara, known for condoning “cub porn” (pedophillic furry art) on the platform. Since Kara formerly went by the handle “allthefoxes”, a reference to a lolicon group, she’d have a vested interest in its allowance. This loophole in moderation carries over to Cohost. Written plainly in their community guidelines.

Note the emphasis on “human” minors and “realism”.

The co-founder Vogon associates with known pedophile & zoophile Eevee. Cohost shuts down her critics and ignores her violation of community guidelines. For instance, her intentionally deadnaming someone’s friend.

The deeper I dig about this circle of people the sicker I feel. Cohost’s banning of toonimal was likely a PR move given the company they keep. It’s a bare minimum move (one Tumblr still hasn’t taken for some reason) that they don’t deserve all this credit for.

A screenshot of a Cohost post by Kara @kaara
Reads:
ok i really hate engaging with stuff like this because i think its wildly unproductive but all of a sudden someone decided an old username of mine sounded similar to the name of a forum where people post loli? and someone mentioning that the username was similar got accepted as fact? and i see people posting that clearly i was obviously referencing a forum i have never heard of and therefore i am some kind of loli/cub/whatever enjoyer and would jump on 10000 grenades to protect this content or whatever.

this is like, blatantly untrue and seems to have been accepted as truth because one dude thought maybe that's where i got that username from? that username was a reference to the old "all the things!" meme way back when. crazy that this shit gets accepted as random fact

i generally believe that most of the things people say about me on the internet are false1, (though i will never claim perfection) but geez man people will just make shit up overnight.

Footnote:
1. fun fact - i used to work for Discord. There was a brief period at Discord where cub porn was allowed. When that policy change was made, people attributed it to me mostly because I was a furry and that association has literally never left me. In reality i was against that policy change in discussion and was able to get it changed back relatively quickly.

A reblog addition also by Kara @kaara
Reads:
ultimately a lot of this kind of shit gets shared around along with some old screenshots (sourced from shitty websites) showing me posting NSFW stuff back in 2012 in an sort of attempt to out me as some kind of pest but no one seems to do the math to realize that in 2011-2012 i was fucking 14-15 and was actively being groomed and trafficked! very cool . !ALT

I would also like to point out that the original screenshot that tries to paint cohost as allowing non-realistic CP is deliberately taken out of context and then blamed on a trans woman, in fact if you click the link to their guidelines and scroll down to the section labelled “fictional 18+ content featuring minors” it says right there that non-photorealistic visual art is also banned. The reason they specify photorealistic in the first screenshot is because the first screenshot is from a section talking about the law, because photorealistic drawn CP is illegal but non-photorealistic isnt.

This entire post is stuff taken out of context to try and paint a trans woman as a pedophile based on rumors for simply existing online.

Thanks to everyone who did their due diligence on this, something I failed to do. It was point blank transmisogynistic for me to take this hearsay at face value. Kaara is right, “all the things” was in fact an old meme in 2012, and is a more plausible explanation for her old handle. With that context, extrapolating that Cohost’s community guidelines are her fault, or her handle is a reference to a lolicon group, is nonsense. Nothing but a transmisogynistic willingness to believe the worst about transfems. To Kaara and every other transfem that had to see this post on their dash, I’m sorry. In light of the persecution transfems are experiencing on and offline, especially now, transmisogyny exempt people like me need to do better. I saw bad things said about her and immediately spread them. As a self-proclaimed ally I should’ve stopped myself right then and there and checked that instinct. But I didn’t. And for that I am truly and deeply apologetic. I’ll edit the original post to exclude the part about Kaara and link to this thread of reblogs debunking it. Transfems feel free to drop your mutual aid posts, gofundmes or cashapps in my messages. I don’t have much but opening my purse and boosting is the least I can do in light of this.

Hey OP, I just want to acknowledge and thank you for the retraction. It’s genuinely nice to see someone handle a situation like this with respect and maturity.

vargamornight:

stories fueled by miscommunication are irritating at minimum but i’m laughing at the person of interest episode where the entire conflict was “married couple each individually hires a different assassin for their spouse” because they have shit communication skills, creating this gem of a timeline:

kidnapping them and leaving them tied up in a room together to force them to speak to each other for the first time in years

“how many times can a person redo their kitchen? i liked the one we had three kitchens ago” “if you’re okay with MEDIOCRITY—”

this tactic actually working and encouraging them to talk, bringing up the real issue that caused a schism years past (which was literally just a misunderstanding that upset one party, and their upset caused the OTHER’s upset, and now they hate each other)

them realizing they DON’T hate each other, they just harbored misplaced resentments

a teary, heartfelt “i’m so sorry i tried to kill you, honey” followed almost immediately by the arresting officers pulling them away from each other while they try to kiss over the gurney carrying one of the assassins out of their house

toxic power couple of the year award goes to these two fucking morons

you said something in your take on the latest debacle thats been rooting around my head like a feral hog.
this is a total paraphrase but
"moderation is not to prevent bullies from hurting people its to keep a nice paint coat of politeness"
i'd like to see you elaborate on that tbh, as like, critique of existing systems of moderation and what could be done better.
what you think moderation Should be

jv:

Let me answer with a real example that happened to me. Early 2023, someone on here sent me a DM to point me to an asshole who was spamming some popular anime fandom tag with TERF shit (basically, taking pictures of characters from that anime and making them into anti-trans memes, totally unrelated with the actual fandom, just pictures and basic shit like “trans women are men” in white all-caps text, etc). I wasn’t a mod, so I couldn’t do anything myself, but I could report it using the special staff fast-lane (basically, go to the mods team channel in slack, point them to what was going on).

A super nice rank-and-file person from the ToS team got the posts removed ASAP and all was good. Until a few hours later, when her boss got into the slack thread where we had been talking about those posts to tell her that it was a mistake to remove them, because they didn’t go against the rules: the posts wasn’t addressing anyone in particular (so no harassment rule violation) and legally wouldn’t be considered hate speech (so no hate speech rule violation).

That’s what I mean. The person on the team who removed the posts cared about preventing bullies from hurting people: She saw someone being a little shit to others in tumblr and said “not on my watch, you fucker”.

On the other side, her boss cared about keeping the coat of politeness: Legally speaking, the TERF wasn’t doing anything that could get them in problems, so for the boss, it wasn’t anything tumblr mods should be involved with.

What I think moderation should be? I think moderation should be opinionated. I think people should be banned for the intend, not for the words. The context matters: A trans person punching up and wishing a comically cartoonish death to a billionaire is way less harmful than a random people posting casual transphobic content on unrelated tags. But to evaluate that, you need to have an opinionated moderation, not some rules trying to establish some level of ‘fair-play’ between equally-valid opinions.

‘beasts’ are not completely analogous to monsters, in my mind. a ‘beast’ is any creature born from the space where the human mind plays with, stylizes, and gives symbolic significance to various aspects of the animal kingdom; whether simply reflecting a real creature through the lense of culture, iconography, and anthropomorphism, or creating one from the symbolic and mythic language of its various parts. a monster is an overlapping but different thing

autism can be an invisible disability.

but saying “autism is an invisible disability” is widely inaccurate & borderline aspie supremacist.

for many of us, our autism is highly visible and i don’t mean the “dress a little quirky a lil absent minded cover our ears when loud noises” just a lil weird kind of visible

this post is for those of us who can’t mask, who high support needs, who nonverbal, who stims all. the. time. who just want to be told “you don’t look autistic” for once in their life, those who will e never appear “normal,” those of us who cannot hide those of us who appear disabled to untrained eye.

yes technically if you know what to look for, anyone’s autism can be visible. yes visible depends on context. no this post not about you.

this post is not about high masking people. you all have so many posts already give us one space to talk about us. make your own post

reblog this version goddamn it

by highly visible autism i mean “able tell first few glance” not “well if look close and know where look and depend on when and how feel if am chose stimming and—”

For me it’s still mostly invisible, as in you won’t guess it from just seeing someone stand in place?

Missing limb is visible. Down syndrome is visible. Blindness is visible.

It counts in specific situation though, like ‘will you be screamed at for using disables parking space’ stuff. It’s not universal.

so. apologize for am having trouble understand. if by “for me it still mostly invisible” you mean your own autism mostly invisible, then cool, nothing to say to that, ignore next paragraph, other than brief “on post centering visibly autistic, why feel need talk about that”

but if by “for me it still mostly invisible” you mean “for me (all) autism still fall in invisible category,” even after post talking about how it can be highly visible, from someone who visibly autistic, to put in kindest way possible suggest you get out of own circle of curated autistic people & actually meet entire spectrum. because autistics who cannot mask (of all support needs) exist. because autistics whose symptoms so debilitating or present in certain way, cannot hide it, exist. because high support needs autistic people exist. because nonverbal nonspeaking autistic people exist. because autistics who move in ways that immediately scream “developmentally disabled!” exist. because autistics who just stand there n stranger can still tell autistic or something wrong, exist. because if you do mean what this paragraph assumes you mean, you so blatantly ignoring & speaking over us, & feel like you have authority define our own experience for us over us, in post made by us for us outlining ways we visible

also invite you to learn about visible difference vs visible disability. n how two overlap sometimes and how they separate distinct.

That’s why I specifically said “seeing someone stand in place”.

As far as I’m aware, autism doesn’t disfigure your body in a way that makes it visually apparent. Which makes you more vunerable to, for example, people screaming at you for using disabled parking spaces.

That’s all I said. Hope it’s clear this time.

once again. need you educate self about difference between visibly disabled versus visibly different before engaging again.

yes most of autism* don’t inherently cause visible differences. which is why this post about visible disability and not visible differences.

yes, if hold an autistic person without other comorbidities in one position. and frozen in time & place. probably not able tell visible difference. because it not visible difference. n never once said it was. we agree on that.

1) but. from get go, am already super clear am talking about visible disability not visible differences.

2) but then you use example where time free flowing—whether or not be judged in disabled parking spaces. because can assure you there autistic person who just exist there, whether stand or sit or whatever, n naturally move body hold body exhibit symptoms in way that visible within one glance despite no visible difference. that’s why say it can be visible disability.

also encourage you think more abt implied idea of… ya know, know many instances of people with visible differences be yelled at for taking disability dedicated spaces like disabled parking lots.

*ETA there also many congenital & genetic & chromosomal disorders that do cause visible difference & they highly associated with autism (maybe even safe to say they cause the autism). visible difference still caused by said congenital genetic chromosomal disorders but they often do tangled with autism it hard to untangle. hence why be safe & say “most of”. idk just feel like convo isn’t complete without explicitly acknowledging this even tho like, not inherent autism alone

All people have a tendency to be unconsciously biased toward seeing trans women as untrustworthy, unsafe, lacking vulnerability, the problem to be solved rather than a person to be taken care of.
And this is not less true in trans and queer and feminist communities. It’s just more unconscious, and more propped up with social justice, feminism, queer lib, leftist, and anti-oppression beliefs.
This book is talking about this in context to a physical public situation of harassment, but this is true of social conflicts too, including on social media, in friend groups, in all kinds of situations.
The unconscious bias also gets taken advantage of by people who know what they’re doing and hide behind that bias to make their mistreatment of transfems seem reasonable—again, often supported with social justice and anti-oppression rhetoric.
TERFs aren’t the only people who do this!
It felt so incredible to see this spelled out in print, plain as day, an actual book calling out a real thing I’ve experience more times than I can count, that all transfems I know go through, and that I still feel crazy for seeing because there’s so much gaslighting about it.
You know how when you KNOW something is real, but you feel defensive about that knowledge, like you have to be ready to hold onto it, and then you see something confirming that knowledge for you in no uncertain terms and it feels like “wow maybe I wasn’t crazy all this time!”
That’s how I felt seeing this.
