like every other game dev born after 1985 i’ve had thoughts of making my own Pokemon-like and the main roadblock for me has been: how do i come up with a typing system that doesn’t just mimic Pokemon’s? and the answer is you don’t come up with a system. maybe there’s types but they’re completely ad-hoc - you could even have one-off types just for one specific mon or move if you want. the flexibility is dizzying; you can add dozens or hundreds of new types whenever. sound type, radiation type, magic type. go wild! you begin to run into combinatorial explosion. strengths and weaknesses grow more nonsensical as you start skipping over most of your ever-growing type chart anytime you add a new one. after all, who cares whether food-type mons are weak or strong versus electricity? they just need to be weak against munch-type attacks, and maybe mold-type too. to make full use of the increasingly-specific types you’ve been coming up with, some of your mons end up with 5 or 10 types. your spidershark monster is, at the very least, a spider, shark, swim, beast, and bug type. overlaps happen; redundancies crop up. music type, nuclear type, mystic type. have you done those before? don’t worry about it. 3 years into development you cannot imagine having ever hated anyone as much as you hate yourself

I got a laptop with Windows 11 for an IT course so I can get certified, and doing the first time device set-up for it made me want to commit unspeakable violence

Windows 11 should not exist, no one should use it for any reason, it puts ads in the file explorer and has made it so file searches are also web searches and this cannot be turned off except through registry editing. Whoever is responsible for those decisions should be killed, full stop.

Switch to linux, it’s free and it’s good.

For anyone who’d like to follow along, I’m gonna share how to get around those things with group policies bc they’re more user friendly and descriptive than registry editor imo :3 I’ll also show how to get around needing a Microsoft account to get setup.

For the Device Setup

“OOBE” stands for Out Of Box Experience which is what that setup workflow is. But it also happens to be a folder with a little program in it that’ll let you skip connecting to the internet; this makes it so you don’t have to sign up with a Microsoft account and can just use a normal local one instead. And it already comes preinstalled! Here’s how you get to it:

1. Hold Shift + F10, or Shift + Fn + F10 depending on your keyboard.
2. Click inside the window that pops up, type the following and press enter afterwards to run it: OOBE\BypassNRO
3. I believe it should restart your computer automatically, but if not then restart your computer or type: shutdown /r /t 0 /f

Now when you’re brought back to the setup workflow, the page where you connect to the internet will have a new button on it that lets you say you don’t have internet. Clicking that and proceeding through the rest of the setup lets you get around the Microsoft account thing.

Group Policies

You don’t have to know much about them, these are just a bunch of specific settings for what your computer can or can’t do that lets you decide how it works in different ways.

I’m gonna show you how to turn off the recommendations and internet stuff basically. For now bring up search and type gpedit, pick this

It’ll open up to Local Group Policy Editor and we can get started :3c

Start Recommendations

In the side menu, go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar. Click on Settings to sort them with all the “Turn off” ones bumped to the top.

Here’s what you should set:

• Turn off user tracking: enabled
• Turn off feature advertisement balloon notifications: enabled
• Remove Recommended section from Start Menu: enabled
• Remove Personalized Website Recommendations from the Recommended section in the Start Menu: enabled
• Do not search Internet: enabled

Windows Spotlight

Back in the side menu, go down to Windows Components > Cloud Content

• Turn off all Windows spotlight features: enabled
• Do not use diagnostic data for tailored experiences: enabled

Cortana

In the side menu, this one’s back at the top under Computer Configuration. You’re gonna want to go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search

• Allow Cortana: disabled
• Don’t search the web or display web results in Search: enabled

News and Interests

In the side menu go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > News and interests.

• Enable news and interests on the taskbar: disabled

Microsoft Account Login Nudges

When you don’t use a Microsoft account they’ll nudge you repeatedly to sign in so you can “get the most out of your experience” *gag*. The group policy for turning that off has a note that suggests it might not work with Windows 11 though (implicitly), so you can close the group policy editor window now and for this last one let’s just open up the regular settings.

Go to System > Notifications > Additional settings, then uncheck all the boxes. And there ya go! (✿◠‿◠)ﾉ u are done.

Group policies are kind of a rabbit hole so while there is a lot more you could change or read into, for your own sanity’s sake I would advise against it and say call it a day lol

Im gonna add this to every post about this i see im never gonna shut up about it. This will get people killed. This will ruin lives. More people live in hiding than you think. So many people are one post away from having to abandon their whole lives. Dont ever post anything of anyone without their consent, stranger or not.

I was at a workshop once and we got talking (off-topic) about how fucked up it is that people do this. And because we were all teachers, we started talking about fucked up it is that people do this in schools.
Like our principal will take photos and videos of everything that goes down at the school and post it on fb, with students’ whole faces in it and everything. And most people don’t even question it. But I was (and remain) shocked that that’s allowed, or that anyone responsible for these kids’ safety would do that.

And one of the guys in the workshop spoke up. He teaches in maximum security prisons. Angering or offending the wrong person could mean real danger for him and his family. For this reason, he keeps very private. He doesn’t tell his students any personal details about him, and keeps himself and his family very low-key on social media, and sets really clear boundaries around sharing his and his family’s info.
So imagine his surprise to go online one day and see that his young son’s elementary school had publicly posted a photo with his son’s face, full name, and location. The school knew the family’s situation, and this guy had specifically told the school not to share anything about his son on social media for safety reasons. But it’s just so normal to share photos of people without their consent that nobody even bothered to consider that they may be crossing boundaries.

People are allowed all kinds of reasons for not wanting their face or actions online. People are entitled to decide for themselves whether they appear on the internet, and to control what and where and in what context they are shared.
Just go home and tell the silly story of that person mysteriously buying a single banana at the grocery store - no need to become a mass-surveillance network about it ffs. You never know who you are putting in danger.
