A message from a few of the trans staff at Tumblr & Automattic:
We want trans people, and LGBTQ+ people broadly, to feel welcome on Tumblr, in part because we as trans people at Tumblr and Automattic want it to be a space where we ourselves feel included. We want to feel like this is a platform that supports us and fights for our safety. Tumblr is made brighter and more vibrant by your presence, and the LGBTQ+ folks who help run it are fighting all the time for this, for you, internally.
A few days ago, Matt Mullenweg (the CEO of Automattic, Tumblr’s parent company) responded to a user’s ask about an account suspension in a way that negatively affected Tumblr’s LGBTQ+ community. We believe that Matt’s response to this ask and his continued commentary has been unwarranted and harmful. Tumblr staff do not comment on moderation decisions as a matter of policy for a variety of reasons—including the privacy of those involved, and the practicalities of moderating thousands of reports a day. The downside of this policy is that it is very easy for rumors and incorrect information about actions taken by our Trust & Safety team to spread unchecked. Given this, we want to clarify a few different pieces of this situation:
The reality of predstrogen’s suspension was not accurately conveyed, and made it seem like we were reaching for opportunities to ban trans feminine people on the platform. This is not the case. The example comment shared in the post linked above does not meet our definition of a realistic threat of violence, and was not the deciding factor in the account suspension.
Matt thereafter failed to recognize the harm to the community as a result of this suspension. Matt does not speak on behalf of the LGBTQ+ people who help run Tumblr or Automattic, and we were not consulted in the construction of a response to these events.
Last year, the “mature” and “sexual themes” community labels were erroneously applied to some users’ posts. An outside team of contractors tasked with applying community labels to posts were responsible for this larger trend of mislabeling trans-related content. When our Trust & Safety team discovered this issue (thanks largely to reports from the community), we removed the contracted team’s ability to apply community labels and added more oversight to ensure it does not happen again. In the Staff post about this, LGBTQ+ staff pushed to be more transparent but were overruled by leadership. The termination of a contractor mentioned in the original ask response was for an unrelated incident which was incorrectly attributed to this case. We regret that the mislabeling ever happened, and the negative impact it has had on the trans community on Tumblr.
Transition timelines are not against our community guidelines, and weren’t a factor considered by the moderation team when discussing suspensions and subsequent appeals. We do not take action against content that is related to transitioning or trans bodies unless it includes violations of the Community Guidelines.
When it comes to the experience of trans folks on Tumblr encountering transphobic content, and interacting with bigoted users, we understand and share your frustrations. Tumblr’s policies, and Automattic’s policies, are written to ensure freedom of speech and expression. We prohibit harassment as defined in our Community Guidelines, but we know that this policy falls short of protecting users from the wider scope of harmful speech often used against LGBTQ+ and other marginalized people.
Going forward, Tumblr is taking the following actions:
Prioritizing anti-harassment features that will empower users to more effectively protect themselves from harassment.
Building more internal tooling for us as Staff to proactively identify and mitigate instances of harassment.
Reviewing which of the tags frequently used by the trans community are blocked, and working to make them available next week.
We’re sorry for how this all transpired, and we’re actively fighting to make our voices heard more and prevent something like this from happening again in the future. We know firsthand that having to deal with situations like this as a Tumblr user is difficult, particularly as a member of an already frequently targeted and harassed community. We know it will take time to regain your trust, and we’re going to put in the work to rebuild it.
We appreciate the space we have been given to express our concerns and dissent, and we are thankful that Matt’s (and Automattic’s) strong commitment to freedom of expression has facilitated it.
We will continue to fight to make Tumblr safe for us all.
— This statement was authored by multiple trans employees of Tumblr and Automattic.
Well, there’s the Israeli ‘left’. A related story, - I’ve spoken about Israeli doctors before and this is an account that will always stay with me - bear in mind Sharon is a Palestinian Christian with an Israeli citizenship who doesn’t support KHamas -
I know people won’t care because you all assume every country that isn’t in the west is automatically homophobic and/or transphobic, but enshrining this bigotry into law, enabling more institutional and state violence is making my heart weep.
for those who do care, Silent Majority is actively fighting against this bill and I do hope people can support them.
Listen to me. Men are boxes and women are circles is made up. Those how to draw anime books are made up. 99% of all style guides are made up. But color theory is very very real.
There’s a fic on fanfiction(.)net that I’ve kept tabs on for years to see if it’s been updated or not. While I’m no longer even in the fandom it’s written for, it just has one of the greatest storylines I’ve ever read. Last time it was updated was 2011.
The other day, I decided to reread the entire thing and leave a very in-depth review of what I thought of each chapter. I also mentioned how I started reading it when I was 13 and am now 21, but always came back to see if it was ever finished because I loved it so dearly.
Today, said author sent me a private message saying that her analytics showed that the story was still getting views even after all these years, but no one ever bothered to leave reviews other than “update soon!!!”, so she never felt motivated enough to finish it. She said that me reviewing every single chapter with lengthy paragraphs made her cry and meant the world to her. She also mentioned that she felt encouraged to write the two remaining chapters needed to complete the story and that she would send me a message the night before she updates the fic.
I’m literally sobbing. I’m so excited :’)
Please always remember to leave a review when reading fanfiction!!! It means a lot to a writer.
Seriously, this is what keeps us going; YOUR COMMENTS.
And you think my ranting about it is just being salty! It’s not! Reviews can mean the difference between feeling motivated and feeling out of place.
COMMENTS ARE WHAT MAKE IT WORTH IT!!!! AND NOT JUST ONES THAT SAY ‘NEXT PART’ OR SOMETHING! THE NICE ONES THAT TELL US WHAT YOU LIKED OR ENJOYED!! THEY MAKE MY HEART DO A DAMN SOMERSAULT EVERY TIME!!
If you wanna protect AO3 or character ai. Or Wattpad. Or Tumblr. Or discord. Or even the right for undocumented people and minors to use the fucking Internet reblog this I swear to God. Reblog this and reblog as many KOSA posts as you can go on their website and contact your Representatives. Do it. Do it. Do it.
I just read this reddit comment about yesterday’s staff post and … 100%
People in the notes of the post don’t seem to understand how massive of a move this is. Sure, this is not the Tuileries palace storming, nor the execution of Louis XVI, but it very well could be Tumblr’s storming of the Bastille.
See, what happened yesterday was a bunch of trans staffers very politely saying “our boss is full of crap, what he is doing is absolutely not ok”, and also “the official line he had been posting narrative of everything being peachy with moderation is bullshit, we acknowledge the systemic problem, and we demand addressing it ASAP”.
Now, this has probably been possible just because of the exceptional circumstances: Louis XVI (Matt) is on vacation on his summer palace, and the person who he had left in charge of the court has refused to order the army to quell the internal strife… so they have stormed the Bastille to ask for the abolition of the ancient regime. Mind you, that doesn’t mean we are at a point where they are in the middle of a revolutionary coup to create the Paris Commune: that’s not in the cards right now. This is more about the people rioting to demand the king powers to have checks and balances. this is about demanding a constitutional monarchy instead of the current absolute king.
The people in the notes don’t seem to understand the exceptional situation that the post creates. We are at a point where Matt Mullenweg has been called out by his own employees. His company, in his absence, had allowed his employees to break with the unified PR narrative that usually is forced to follow whatever path the CEO points to.
Now Louis XVI is in a peculiar position. His Authority had not only been questioned by the Paris rabble (us), but now he also had a regiment of elite grenadiers (1er Régiment du Trans Guards) openly in revolt and siding with the people of Paris. They are not firing at the royal palace, but they are saying “you know what? The people in the streets are right. We are not firing at them, your majesty”. So Matt’s next move is crucial. As I see it, there are several possibilities:
- the king / Matt acknowledges he had been in the wrong (either honestly or just because he doesn’t feel powerful enough to win a civil war), accepts to get his powers limited, and allows some partial reform to address people’s demands. This is obviously the best option for my friends still working for Tumblr. That doesn’t mean tumblr would become a queer communist paradise, but at least we would see things improving.
- the king refuses to engage: he moves the court to another city (names a new Tumblr CEO reporting to him) and move the army to Paris to repress the rebellion (fires the people behind the post, double down in the current moderation policies). Things keep being the same, but without the people who asked for improvements.
- the king gets fed up of having to deal with ungrateful rabble and decides to just make an example out of Paris and orders the army to reprise the St. Bartholomew night, but on Paris population this time. This would be Matt firing everyone involved and closing Tumblr two months from now.
Right now, I wouldn’t know which of these three options is more probable. Matt has been very quiet since yesterday, and whatever he posts next would be a big signal of how he is going to react to this development of The Situation.
the fact that op decided the best way to explain this was to compare it to louis the xvi, and was probably right, is peak tumblr
Interesting to read it as being compared to the storming of the Bastille; the vibes I got were more “initial drafting of the Magna Carta”.
Either way, a smart monarch -er- boss would take note. They spoke for themselves but also for a large quantity of our beloved hellions and only a foolish person ignores serious talk of potential mutiny.
Well, you are right. I thought comparing @staff post to the tennis court oath instead of the Bastille, but hell, there are people in the notes complaining that they don’t understand anything about this post already, if I had gone for more historical accuracy this post would only made any sense to @xiranjayzhao and the rest of french revolution nerds in the room :D
Maybe I could have gone full Darmok and reblog the staff post just commenting:
Their cult teaches them that the world is full of scary monster people who hate them for being so good and loved by god. If you swear at them and call them names or get in their face you’re just doing the cults work for it.
I’m not saying you have to listen to their presentation or try to debate them (and really getting into a debate without thoroughly understanding what they’re being taught will just make things worse)… I am just saying to be polite and say no thank you like if they were trying to hand you a flyer for something you don’t care about.
It’s easier for them to see the world outside their bubble as less scary if they see everyday people just going about their business and being as nice to them as you are to everyone else. This goes doubly for anyone who happens to dress modestly, not swear, and not drink or smoke because whatever you believe, they’ll see you as a “good” person who happens to strangely have no interest in their “message”, and that might be enough to get some curious about the possibility of themselves living in the real world.
It’s sometimes hard to be nice to people who seem to represent something you dislike. Just remember these “elders” are sheltered young men, some of which are getting their first real contact with people of other/no faiths.
They are not your enemy. They are victims.
They aren’t being sent out to actually convert people, they are being sent out hoping that they will be harassed and treated poorly so they view those outside the cult as dangerous and evil and stick to the safety of the familiar group.
You being mean to some teenager isn’t sticking it to anyone, you’re doing exactly what their church elders want to happen.
PLEASE READ THIS.
Please read this.
Don’t do the church’s work for them.
If you’re kind to enough of them, they put you on a block list.
They were such sweet kids, they’d turn up at my door with the thatch of raspberries out front and try to share their word with me, and I’m me, so, I fed them.
Then it was one of the wee ‘elder’s’ birthday, so I made him a cake, and all the little lads came, and they asked about my books and board games and CCGs, I was just a nice frumpy middle aged Jewish lady, I was no threat, so I fed them and made them cakes and took them to the local gaming store and listened when they talked.
One loved yu-gi-oh cards, and it turns out, one of the other wee lads, we’ll he loved him back, so I got them in touch with some resources so they had support and a different way to pay for college, they’re still together 15 years later, they have dogs, they send me ecards on their birthday. No-one figured out I’d.helped them, I was just the nice lady who made them tea and listened when people were slamming doors.
The next one really wanted to be an artist, so I left out art books and resources, my eldest shared their coptic markers, they draw comic books now, no idea why his folks were insisting he needed to be a dentist, but, he’s not a Mormon anymore, (not a Jew either before anyone makes any counter conversion claims).
The first 2 lads were the only dramatic ones, the rest went back into the network but, like Hugh of Borg, they spread the word, sometimes I’d get Mormons from other cities come and make the journey to break bread at my Sabbath table and be seen.
I still think very fondly of that time.
Many of those boys still email me now and then.
Most of them aren’t Mormons anymore.
Someone higher up spotted the pattern and suddenly no more Mormons at my door.
I was blacklisted, for kindness.
So there you go, if you don’t want Mormons at your door, just love those kids for a couple of years, feed them, help them, and eventually, no more will be allowed to visit
I have a very rough idea in my head that I don’t think I can clearly articulate beyond “And that concludes tonight’s reports on German air forc—WHAT’S THIS? IT’S KING ARTHUR WITH A STEEL CHAIR”
IDK what this is about, but I want to know more.
This isn’t exactly the same idea but it could be but there is more rattling around in here so:
The Blitz here manages to qualify as Britain’s Darkest Hour, thus triggering the return of Arthur from the Realm Avalon.
He does not speak a lick of modern English. He speaks an unholy mishmash of Brittonic and Late Classical Latin.
(Honestly I can see the latter becoming a plot point if they manage to get their hands on a Roman Catholic priest to act as a translator. It wouldn’t be a perfect arrangement, but probably better than anything else.)
Truthfully he probably gets mistaken for a madman.
Somehow manages to steal a Spitfire out from under the RAF’s nose, proceeds to use it to bring down like half an enemy squadron on his own, then lands in a field in the middle of nowhere.
Police and RAF converge on his location on account of the whole “stealing a plane” thing. They eventually overwhelm him with sheer numbers, but he manages to knock out an impressive number of them in the process. I mean, come on. It’s Arthur.
“a catholic priest” i mean yeah sure why not but JRRTOLKIEN himself was alive and a teacher at the time so go big or go home.
You know what sure why not let’s just make literal real-life JRRT himself a character in this Arthurian return story, he deserves it.
When you encounter a person who does not do something that you consider normative, you need to understand that they could be either stating a barrier or expressing a boundary. A barrier is “I would like to partake of the normative activity, but I can’t due to other factors.” A boundary is “I have made a decision not to participate in the normative activity.”
Many people do not believe that boundaries actually exist! This is why it’s so common to give a clear “No” on an issue and get inundated with people saying “But have you tried-” They can’t conceptualize that anyone might actually want to avoid X thing, so they assume that you totally want to do X and you would love X so much if only they could figure out a way around whatever pesky obstacle is getting in your way. But humanity contains multitudes, and for any given experience you consider vital for happiness I promise there are people who are Just Not Interested.
If someone is stating a boundary, do NOT talk about how sad their life must be, and do NOT try to push them! Just accept that their life experience is very different from your own, and isn’t that a beautiful thing?
Barriers are different. Barriers suck. With boundaries, the only problem is other people being dicks. With barriers, the problem is the barrier itself … and probably, additionally, people being dicks. There’s really not a way to win in the people being dicks department when you don’t do something that other people have decided is Necessary For Humaning.
If someone is talking about a barrier they face, still don’t talk about how sad their life must be, although it’s fine to commiserate with a friend if they’re complaining. It’s hard! Some barriers are pretty insurmountable; the person might not ever get to do X even though they want to. And a lot of people don’t believe that this kind of barrier exists either; we’re very much taught that you can do anything if you try hard enough, when that is simply not true. If someone tells you that they can’t do something, listen to them and respect that.
The only reason for not doing X that people really acknowledge as real are the surmountable barriers. And these are real, but even in these cases you should always assume that the person knows themself best and not give advice unless they’ve specifically asked for it. But if they have asked, it’s chill to try to brainstorm solutions with them.
As someone who has both things going on, it really sucks that people tend to assume that everything is a) a barrier issue and b) that they personally have the solution to it. Don’t do this.
The only way you can tell if something is a boundary or a barrier is to listen to people and believe them.
Example:
If you offer someone a drink and they say, “No thanks … I haven’t really found anything that I like yet,” (barrier, potentially surmountable) it is probably cool to ask them if they’re open to trying something new, and if they say yes ask about their tastes to try to find a drink they would enjoy! They might like it or they might not.
If you offer someone a drink and they say, “I can’t, it interacts with my meds,” (barrier, insurmountable) you can say, “Aw, that sucks!” and offer them something nonalcoholic.
If you offer someone a drink and they say, “I don’t drink,” (BOUNDARY) you should give them a mocktail and shut the fuck up.
The remake reboot prequel sequel industrial complex is killing me but the good thing is I don’t have to watch any of that. I can just think “that sounds boring or otherwise doesn’t interest me in any way” and do something other than watch it
“They’re making a willy wonka origin story with timothee chalamet,” you might say to me. “They’re doing a live action the last airbender again, didn’t you love avatar?” I don’t find it necessary. This is nothing to me
I agree…
with the exception of DuckTales. That reboot was amazing.
DuckTales is an exception because it was made by people who grew up with the original 1987 series/the Disney Afternoon block and were influenced by the comics, especially those made by Carl Barks and Don Rosa. They showed genuine respect for the source materials while having the reboot be its own thing. 😌 A lot of the other reboots, revivals, prequels, sequels, and what not are made to be cash cows that capitalize on nostalgia; in other words, most of them don’t follow what I like to call the “DuckTales Method” of bringing back beloved IPs.
I miss when every new transformers show was trying ultra hard NOT to be G1.
i want there to be more fanfic aus where everything is the same but for one minor detail. everything is the same but there’s sentient animals wandering around. everything is the same but everyone is called gerry. everything is the same but two characters are siblings for no reason
At the Minnesota Fringe Festival in 2018 there was a show called “Hamlet, But Hamlet’s a Chicken.” It was more or less what it said on the tin. They had made arrangements to borrow some therapy chickens, and for any scene that needed Hamlet, an affectionate handler gently carried in that day’s chicken (it would be one specific chicken for any given performance, but they didn’t have one chicken play Hamlet the whole time as that would have stressed out the chickens) and set her on the stage and then the chicken got to wander around and do whatever she wanted as the other actors did the scene.
There was also, I think, a scene with swordfighting where it was “the fight scene, but everyone’s using pool noodles” and some other similarly bizarre changes, but the MAIN thing I remember
was Hamlet’s soliloquy
because they just announced, “Hamlet’s soliloquy!” and then brought out the chicken and set her on the stage and then let her just hang out being a chicken for like FIVE MINUTES and the entire audience watched, completely riveted. It helps that chickens are cute. At one point she fluffed up her feathers and everyone gasped. A+ show, would go see it again.
i cannot begin to explain the emotions i feel every day knowing that this post i made in the middle of playing tf2 when i was 16 is going to be the one thing of mine that has made the largest impact on the world by a fucking mile
Reason #789 why Zuko joining the Gaang earlier would have been hilarious: he’s the only one sleep-deprived enough to understand Aang’s batshit exhaustion hallucinations
Aang: oh my god Appa and Momo are fighting with katanas
Zuko: Momo’s sword is actually a wakizashi, it’s too small to be a katana
Aang: wait you can see them
Zuko, who hasn’t had a proper night’s sleep since he had clear skin: I See Everything
Katara: Aang please go to sleep
Aang: BUT I FORGOT MY PANTS AND-
Zuko, nodding: and your math test
Aang: AND MY MATH TEST
Aang: so then I said “NO FIRE LORD OZAI, YOU’RE NOT WEARING PANTS” and boom, nightmare over
She absolutely thought that was gonna be some kind of sick fucking burn but it was not
If I had a nickel for every time a prominent right-wing media figure tried to pull a sick burn on twitter and in doing so, inadvertently implied that they want to have sex with one of their biological parents I would have two nickels
Hi, Tumblr. It’s Tumblr. We’re working on some things that we want to share with you.
AI companies are acquiring content across the internet for a variety of purposes in all sorts of ways. There are currently very few regulations giving individuals control over how their content is used by AI platforms. Proposed regulations around the world, like the European Union’s AI Act, would give individuals more control over whether and how their content is utilized by this emerging technology. We support this right regardless of geographic location, so we’re releasing a toggle to opt out of sharing content from your public blogs with third parties, including AI platforms that use this content for model training. We’re also working with partners to ensure you have as much control as possible regarding what content is used.
Here are the important details:
We already discourage AI crawlers from gathering content from Tumblr and will continue to do so, save for those with which we partner.
We want to represent all of you on Tumblr and ensure that protections are in place for how your content is used. We are committed to making sure our partners respect those decisions.
To opt out of sharing your public blogs’ content with third parties, visit each of your public blogs’ blog settings via the web interface and toggle on the “Prevent third-party sharing” option.
For instructions on how to opt out using the latest version of the app, please visit this Help Center doc.
Please note: If you’ve already chosen to discourage search crawling of your blog in your settings, we’ve automatically enabled the “Prevent third-party sharing” option.
If you have concerns, please read through the Help Center doc linked above and contact us via Support if you still have questions.

unfortunately, a lot of the userbase won’t opt out. those who don’t see this post, those who have posted to tumblr but don’t anymore, users on older versions of the app who forget to opt out next time they’re on desktop, etc. the point of making it opt-out is to take advantage of people who wouldn’t have opted in but don’t/can’t opt out in time.automatically opting out people who have discouraged search crawling is a gesture that helps Tumblr look more kind, but from the fact that everyone else has to manually opt out, Tumblr is definitely not looking benevolent.
I wonder, will Tumblr/Automattic be selling images from deactivated blogs? I assume deactivated blogs can’t opt out.
when will they start selling this data? Is it already too late to keep them from selling every image you’ve posted before you opted out?
and if they’re especially malicious, I wonder if they could get away with saying “this image is from a blog that’s opted out, but it was reblogged by a blog that hasn’t opted out, so we’re selling the image that’s on that non-opted-out blog.”
making users need to opt out to keep their images from being taken and sold is a shitty move that makes it clear Tumblr/Automattic don’t respect our privacy, and @staff are really not giving us much info here to suggest otherwise.
For people with anxiety about filing taxes, here’s what things that happen when you make a mistake on your tax return:
- it gets corrected
- you get a letter in the mail either asking for some additional information or a letter showing the adjustment
- you pay the amount (there’s options for payment plans too!) or get a refund
Things that do not happen
- you’re “in trouble”
- you are charged with fraud
- you go to jail
I know that most people are probably just joking/exaggerating when they say a mistake on their return means they get thrown in jail but when I worked with the public I always would encounter people who believed that would happen and they would be panicking about it. So I like to put this out there every year because if I can even prevent one person from feeling that way, it’s worth it
Annual reblog of this important information.
The thingy above where you sign your tax form says that you’ve filled it out to the best of your ability. “Sir, I am a dumbass” is 100% a valid defense
Something about that cop saying Nex was just as guilty as the girls who beat them up so badly they blacked out and how cops treat native youth.
Something about the media calling it a fight and not a murder, not a hate crime and how MMIWG2S+ are never looked for, never investigated, never seen as victims.
Something about the media portraying them as the aggressor and native youth always being seen as the aggressor, even in death.
Something about the hospital who released them despite going through head trauma and how the medical system ignores native people, and how the medical system was created through experimentation on native people.
Something about trans youth being told to “just leave” and Oklahoma being their homelands.
Something about Oklahoma legislature and two spirit people existing in Oklahoma before Oklahoma existed.
Something about Nex’s Indigenous identity being erased in every news article, every post, and how that was the stated goal of the USA upon which it was founded.
i just don’t think “is dude gender neutral” is that productive of a conversation because a word can be gendered and still used regardless of gender. i call my male friends girlypop and my female friends man but i don’t think anybody would agree that those are somehow not gendered terms.
the real question is just “would you be willing to apologize and stop using a word if somebody told you it made them uncomfortable?” the answer to which in a surprising number of cases is no mostly because it seems like overall ppl r more upset abt getting accused of transphobia than they are abt being transphobic
