People say that old games dont look as good as they remember
Its because they legitimately dont.
The “fuzz” from CRT monitors was something that was definitely accounted for and taken advantage of back in the day when it came to video games! While this effect is noticeable in 3D games, it’s MUCH more visible when it comes to 2D sprites:
Just look how much more depth these simple sprites of Princess Peach and Bowser from Super Mario RPG seem to have when seen through the “dots” of a CRT TV screen!
I somehow did not know this!?!?!?
One of the clearest examples of this is using the effect for transparent waterfalls in the MegaDrive Sonic games
My absolutely favourite example of this is with Dracula’s eyes in Castlevania
Parents get sooooooo mad when anyone even remotely implies that if we know it negatively impacts adults then it’s probably quite detrimental to the health and development of a young mind to stick an iPad in front of a child any time they show signs of Behaviors. “Are you calling me a bad parent?” Yeah. I am.
the UK’s ‘anti-BDS’ boycott bill is returning to parliament for a third reading and vote Wednesday 10th of January.
this proposed law is not aimed at individuals, it would be impossible to stop people from boycotting, but instead targets public bodies like universities, public sectors, and councils in the UK. this would prevent public bodies from making ethical choices about where they want to invest their employee’s pension funds. e.g. pension funds could be invested into companies that make arms for countries committing genocide.
the anti-boycott bill explicitly mentions Israel, trying to give them protection from public body boycotts as well as undermine the Palestinian led campaign for boycotting. it’s disgusting and disgraceful.
share and reblog this post with your UK friends if you are not a UK resident.
cutting into a 3 foot wide peppermint, juices spilling across the cutting board. placing my chefs knife between a lollipops eyeballs and pushing down. slamming the heavy end of a writhing tootsie roll against the side of my counter, severing its spine and killing it instantly
In December 2023 they laid off a huge percentage of their translation teams, replacing them with ai and having the remaining members review the ai translations to make sure the translations are “acceptable” (Note how they use the world acceptable and not accurate)
The rate of mispronounced words (mostly on/kun substitutions in Japanese) has gone dramatically up in my lessons, and I’m willing to bet this is why.
Last year, The New Yorker published an interview of Luis von Ahn, founder of Duolingo. Guys, this is nothing new: He is completely okay with replacing actual teachers with AI. As an educator myself, I found the interview incredibly infuriating. These were some of his responses:
Some teachers are good, but the vast majority are not all that great. [Humans]…are just hard to deal with. You need a lot of human tutors, and they’re kind of hard to use, and we can’t get them for free. And I really want people to be able to learn for free.
Honestly, what the fuck was that? Human tutors are “hard to use”? What is it with the mega wealthy tech bros seeing ordinary humans as a commodity? And him trying to pretend that he cares about education by stating that he wants people to be “able to learn for free”? Boy hasn’t heard of a library in his life? I’m surprised that he had the audacity (or delusion?) to even say that on a big publication.
There’s more, btw.
I’m like, O.K., well, a small number of people are out of a job, but suddenly we can teach everybody better. It’s not like I feel great about this, but I think it’s better to be able to teach all of humanity cheaply, right?
Teachers make only a fraction of what he earns, and he is so eager to rob us of our livelihood in the false name of pushing humanity forward with “free” education. He’s only fooling himself.
I used to love Duolingo. I have had my account for nearly seven years now, but it has continually downgraded ever since, with its latest UI being so anti-neurodivergent. I quit after reaching an achievement, and I won’t be coming back. I’m going to miss it, though.
Anyway, if y'all have any good recos for language learning apps that don’t require paid subscriptions in order to continue learning, please share!
the real question is how the fuck did persephone only manage to eat 6 pomegranate seeds. theyre like the fucking cocaine of fruit you cant eat just 6 singular seeds you have to pop handfuls upon handfuls into ur mouth at rapid speeds and then get sad cause you spent half an hour getting them out of the pomegranate and ate all of them in 5 minutes
there’s absolutely nothing better than reading a 100k word fanfic, that is until you remember you have a body that is starving, thirsty and incredibly sleep deprived and hasn’t used the bathroom since the sun set 8 hours ago
i think it’s about damn time to invent a computer mouse that doesn’t require a flat surface (or any surface) to move on. i want an orb i can move around in the air instead of a mouse >:-(
yknow it’s more than a little sad that every artists ‘hand-wringing panicking’ about what ai would do to the industry and how it would replace a lot of the already slim meat-and-potatoes jobs we rely on to survive were overwhelmingly proven true months after the technology really became widespread. It’s sad that convention space is being taken up by enormous booths full of cheap ai prints soaking up the limited space and money available at cons, it’s sad that competitions are getting flooded with ai generated pieces, it’s sad that i’ve seen a lot of ‘man. i’m just gonna go work at target, i can’t compete with this.’ from ppl who have been working in the industry for YEARS.
But it’s INFURIATING to see supposedly leftist game devs and indie ttrpg makers on here try and astroturf a PR campaign for ai to make using it for their projects more socially acceptable, and in order to do this paint artists as pearl clutching hysterics. As if anyone would blink on here if factory workers threw a brick through a window when they were being replaced by automation, but because art is never respected or treated like actual labor our industry collapsing is just kind of a big joke.
Like I saw someone compare the gay sex cats to Duchamp LIKE NO!!!! THEYRE NOT!!! The people who would get pissed off at Duchamp’s fountain are a very specific demographic!!!! Namely fascists!!! Like the implication of a statement like that is actually absurd. who is the fascist in this analogy, 25 year old nonbinary artists?? If you don’t want to pay artists to do your backgrounds for your indie game like just SAY it. (edit: additional context bc this got out of hand but I’ve looked at the blog of the person who said this and i’m walking back the salt I expressed here. It’s a nuanced take that wasn’t expressed super clearly in the post that went viral and he’s elaborated on it a lot in a way that makes me feel this was an unfair interpretation of his words. My bad)
Look I get that we all want to relate to one another. I really do. But seeing people on my post about how shitty it is to exist as a visibly deformed & disabled person in public say things like “that’s why i don’t stim in public” or “that’s why i’m scared to bring my cane in public” is just… You’re missing the point.
Some of us cannot mask our disabilities. You can simply not stim if you can supress it in the first place. You can leave your cane at home if you’re doing that already in the first place. A knee brace doesn’t make you look like a “freak”. You do appear abled otherwise.
I cannot. Many people I know cannot. I can’t just “hide” my deformities and abnormal gait or convulsions to appear abled. I *need* my crutches everywhere I go. I can’t supress my tics. Full-time wheelchair users exist. High support needs autistics exist. Schizospecs who cannot mask exist. People with William’s Sydrome, Down’s Syndrome and various obvious deformities exist. Little people. People with severe chemical burns or otherwise or scarring. People with Parkinson’s, Tourette’s, Huntington’s, Cerebral Palsy, every disabled person who looks “abnormal”.
We can’t just “turn it off” like you. People WILL stare at us. Point their fingers at us. We have no power. They used to put us into freakshows. Not you. Not you who can hide your disability to “appear normal”. That post was not for you to “relate to”. I and many people are sick of many invisibly disabled people claiming they “want to look disabled” so they’d be “taken more seriously”. It’s not an invitation of you to declare you leaving your mobility aid at home or shit like that. It’s not the damn same.
i will spend every day of the rest of my life saying ‘if you’re going to like something you should reblog it too’
nobody’s judging you for what you reblog unless it is outright hate, but you know who DOES care about it? our dying art community.
this site is BUILT on fanworks and we’re complaining an awful lot about the changes staff is making to try to boost site traffic, yet doing little to support what communities we have on here. you don’t have to leave tags, you don’t have to leave comments, but if you want tumblr to stay the same we have to reblog shit on this site like we used to otherwise we’ll lose the artists and writers our foundation was built on.
It’s all “be gay do crimes” “cringe culture is dead uwu” until y'all lay your eyes upon someone genuinely weird/transgressive like nonhuman-identifying people, or kinky people, or even neurodivergent people who can’t mask to your satisfaction and suddenly y'all are chomping at the bit to become attack dogs for an oppressive social order/“normalcy”
the thing that makes tumblr discourse so frustrating really is how many people will just straight up not reflect on the biases with which they read things other people say, like it really is just confirmation bias hell. like i don’t put coded messages or defenses of people in my takes, if i were coming to someone’s defense i’d use their name. my post calling out people’s behaviors against me isn’t magically a post defending an entirely unrelated person i don’t know.
boy it would be nice to be able to google something related to personality disorders, psychosis, intellectual disabilities, autism, DID/OSDD, etcetera without finding majority articles that are like “how to deal with a person with X” “how to cope with your child with X” “how to spot someone faking X” “can people with X be cured?”
doES ANYONE ELSE REALIZE THAT WE’RE LIKE, THE FIRST GENERATION ON TUMBLR
GIVE IT 10-15 YEARS AND WE’LL ALL BE GROWN UP AND AN ENTIRE NEW SET OF KIDS WILL BE ON HERE BLOGGING ABOUT COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SHOWS AND BANDS AND MOVIES AND BOOKS
THE ONLY THING THEY’LL STILL BE BLOGGING ABOUT THE SAME AS WE WERE IS DOCTOR WHO
HOPEFULLY
We’ll probably all be blogging about Sherlock season 4.
“i can fix him” “i can make him worse” well i can split him into the fixed and worse versions of himself resulting in existential horror, identity crises, and maybe a little violence
i read the faq to make sure sorry if i missed something, but i keep seeing Small Goodman Goes To Court on my youtube recommendations. it is like a specter in my machine. what is happening
I love this picture because even 70 years ago, way up in the Arctic in a culture very different than my own, a 17 year old still had the same “Dad, please hurry up and take the damn picture” expression that characterized every picture taken of me from 2001-2007.
every time i delete a bad post midway through writing it i feel like the angel on my shoulder has guided my hand . and then it gets to put one coin in the savings jar for our trip to eternal paradise
one of my favorite things about my job that i can say to people that sounds utterly ridiculous but is technically 100% true is that one of our sea turtles keeps trying to get me to commit a felony on her behalf and gets SUPER cranky when i won’t do it
this is because she is spoiled rotten and LOVES head and shell scritches. every time i go to the tank she’s in to collect water samples while she happens to be awake and swimming near the surface, she sees my hand enter the water and immediately comes over to try and get my attention, headbutting the dive platform and splashing water at me and generally making a huge fuss.
unfortunately, because she is also a ~100yr old green sea turtle, i legally cannot touch her. she’s a protected species, and a fairly prominent individual at that, and im not one of the aquarists who dives into that tank NOR am i a vet, so i’m not among the handful of people who are ALLOWED to give her scratchies. she knows all of the divers personally, and knows that i am not one of them. she doesn’t care. she wants attention and because she’s the specialest princess in the entire universe she will do anything in her power to get it.
she also throws a big ol tantrum when i end up not petting her. she’ll stick up her head to snort water at me, slap at the platform and ladder with her fins, and then swim under the dive platform and bump her shell against the bottom — she’s a 500lb turtle, which is a lot of weight for her to be throwing around. i usually have to move pretty quick to get off the platform and onto solid ground cuz there have been times where i’ve genuinely felt like i was about to lose my balance and REALLY didn’t want to end up falling into the tank.
^ myrtle, throwing a tantrum because she was unsuccessful at peer pressuring me into violating the endangered species act
