Please don’t assume the worst possible intent out of strangers on the internet when whatever they’re saying could probably be taken relatively innocuously
I know we’re all on the lookout for dogwhistles (and that’s good, you should be) but assuming the worst out of everyone all the time is just… no way to live.
This is my half of “Unhealthy”, an essay comic double header with the lovely and talented Sarah Winifred Searle. She and I both wrote about our personal experiences as overweight ladies with eating disorders, and her story is breathtaking! You can buy a physical copy of the book here: https://topatoco.com/collections/abby-howard/products/ah-unhealthy
A comic by an inspiring woman, whose story mirrors much of my own.

Time to re-up this one. Virtual hugs to everyone out there who has been told they shouldn’t live unless they are ashamed of being fat. You should. Please, live.

Everyone should take the time to read this- but especially thin allies in the body positivity movement to end fatshaming who sympathize but haven’t experienced fatphobia directly. Great insight into the mindset of fat people who want to be healthy, but have bad relationships with food that have been pushed on them by society.
I relate to this so much… thankfully I never developed an eating disorder but those thoughts have plagued me all my life.
I love this picture because even 70 years ago, way up in the Arctic in a culture very different than my own, a 17 year old still had the same “Dad, please hurry up and take the damn picture” expression that characterized every picture taken of me from 2001-2007.
it was Appreciate A Dragon day earlier this week, so i drew this! for dragon appreciation!
it’s the End dragon- you know the one. From Minecraft. If you cracked open my skull right now you’d just see ‘minecraft minecraft minecraft’ oozing out like a runny yolk.
every time i delete a bad post midway through writing it i feel like the angel on my shoulder has guided my hand . and then it gets to put one coin in the savings jar for our trip to eternal paradise

Just a heads up to everyone that is the outdated version of the disability pride flag, that version was causing people eyestrain triggered migraines and in some cases risked seizures. So the original creator edited the design and the current disability pride flag looks like this

“this character is autistic coded so headcanoning them as aro/ace is wrong because you’re reinforcing the idea that autistic people are incapable of having romantic or sexual relationships” DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MANY ASPEC PEOPLE ARE ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM

autism speaks has not had the goal to cure autism since the early 2010s, and the desire to cure autism was removed from their mission statement in 2016 (found in the above link to the FAQ)
I’d like to read the thoughts on this post of other autistic people (OP’s Tumblr indicates being autistic; I am not, but I have an autistic stepson and nephew for whom I want to learn more).
Note: I haven’t been able to check out all of the included links in the post yet. I’m struggling with my chronic illnesses rn, and have very low spoons.
Please be civil. I’m not looking for an argument.
Can you trust an organization that just a few years ago was seriously regarded by most autistic adults as equivalent to the KKK?
I’m generally asking.
Would you trust a group that was deemed that hurtful and harmful just because it had made some progress in recent years?
“Sure, when I was an autistic kid, they did x, y and z. But it’s 10 years later. And they’ve improved!”
I’d say any group that most autistic people themselves - not neurotypical people who know autistic people, but those of us who are autistic and old enough to understand and analyze the harmful things done in our names by the neurotypical people who founded and continue to run said organization, dare I say matter a hell of a lot more than the isolated opinions of anyone else. Even those isolated autistic people who somehow now excuse their history.
The fundamental identity of autism speaks is rooted in neurotypical opinions and people. It was made by them, for them, and never truly meant for us actually autistic people. The fact we’ve convinced them to change their tune so much is because we’ve spoken out so strongly against them. Not because they decided to change for their own good.
They must be purged from existence. They can’t be reformed. They’re a fundamentally neurotypical support group for people trying to force and change neurodivergent people to be like them. They’ve simply developed further and better camouflage as we actually autistic people have refused to back down and accept them as the default advocacy group.
They don’t speak for us. Never have. Never will. I don’t give a damn how much they change. They exist for neurotypicals. Not us. They are not OUR ADVOCATES.
As an individual, you can believe what you want. But the community consensus is what it is for a reason. Don’t try to undermine or alter that because you’ve bought into what they’re currently selling.
Signed, an actually autistic person, aged 39.
holy fucking shit
imagine comparing the only reason USAmerican autistics have any rights at all to the fucking KKK
you know absolutely nothing about autistic people (especially not level 2 and 3 autistic people)
I was there when they were doing the bad things. I’ve partaken in the discourse on autism speaks since before you were born. On behalf of the community, I strongly urge you to benefit from our age and wisdom.
I don’t care what good show they’ve put on, or even if it’s generally legitimate reform: they’re not an autistic advocacy group. Research their past crimes. Do better. You’re young but by gods you also have a wonderful mind and I know you can put it to good work here. You can’t just take whatever they shovel at you for face value, and you can’t just judge them by what they’ve done the last few years under intense pressure from people like me for the last 20 years.
And the comparison isn’t mine, it’s ancient lore from the before times. Flawed I’ll admit but it sure gets the point across. Please put as much research into WHY autism speaks is so denounced as you did in assembling their propaganda links.
Much love,
Your autistic elder Admin 2.
Autism $peaks is a profit based anti-neurodivergent hate group. Why is anyone doubting that or trying to redeem them?

Ahh compressed for our convenience, just what I like to see
one of my favorite things about my job that i can say to people that sounds utterly ridiculous but is technically 100% true is that one of our sea turtles keeps trying to get me to commit a felony on her behalf and gets SUPER cranky when i won’t do it
this is because she is spoiled rotten and LOVES head and shell scritches. every time i go to the tank she’s in to collect water samples while she happens to be awake and swimming near the surface, she sees my hand enter the water and immediately comes over to try and get my attention, headbutting the dive platform and splashing water at me and generally making a huge fuss.
unfortunately, because she is also a ~100yr old green sea turtle, i legally cannot touch her. she’s a protected species, and a fairly prominent individual at that, and im not one of the aquarists who dives into that tank NOR am i a vet, so i’m not among the handful of people who are ALLOWED to give her scratchies. she knows all of the divers personally, and knows that i am not one of them. she doesn’t care. she wants attention and because she’s the specialest princess in the entire universe she will do anything in her power to get it.
she also throws a big ol tantrum when i end up not petting her. she’ll stick up her head to snort water at me, slap at the platform and ladder with her fins, and then swim under the dive platform and bump her shell against the bottom — she’s a 500lb turtle, which is a lot of weight for her to be throwing around. i usually have to move pretty quick to get off the platform and onto solid ground cuz there have been times where i’ve genuinely felt like i was about to lose my balance and REALLY didn’t want to end up falling into the tank.
^ myrtle, throwing a tantrum because she was unsuccessful at peer pressuring me into violating the endangered species act
i don’t know who needs to hear this, but guilt, self-hatred and shame are not sustainable sources of growth and healing. you can’t hate yourself into feeling better, or being better. you can’t repeatedly punish yourself for your flawed humanity and expect wholesome results.
seeing people my age talk about how scared they are of memory loss, which they only associate with old age, is so surreal to see as a 24 year old who has actively experienced memory loss for a long time now
there are causes for memory loss besides dementia and alzheimer’s, i hope y’all know that. dissociative disorders, trauma, brain injuries, thyroid problems, even just stress and lack of sleep can fuck up your ability to store, process, and access memory. and that’s just a few of the many causes i can think of off the top of my head right now.
please stop treating disabled people like some scary “other” that you might become only in the distant, decades-away future. we are your age, too. you may become one of us sooner than you know. stop acting like memory loss marks the end of a life, when so many of us have so much living left to do!
i feel like the “this too is yuri” meme is genuinely healing the tumblr fandom ecosystem. i’ve seen more posts about lesbian ships and wlw memes on this app in since i first saw the meme surface than i have in my entire history of using tumblr. peace and love on planet women
so apparently it’s “ADBLOCK” (and “adblock plus”) not “ublock origin” causing the cpu issues. you should 1000000% switch to “ublock origin” if you’re still using “adblock”
AdBlock hasn’t been relevant in ages, AdBlock Plus displays what it considers “acceptable” ads, and uBlock is maintained by a guy whose first action after taking over someone else’s project was putting up his own donation link.
You want uBlock Origin specifically, and no, multiple adblockers don’t help blocking more ads and only slow your computer down.
I want everyone to know that the guy who’s talking on the yugioh side of the Strategy panel has a deck so complicated it created the most infamous Excel spreadsheet in Yugioh history.
Speaking as someone w a degree in ancient history I have a lot of Opinions about that 1 post about Elagabalus that’s going around but I don’t have the energy to get into it properly. I will however share this very pertinent section from the BBC article on the subject:
Dr Shushma Malik, a Cambridge university classics professor, told the BBC: “The historians we use to try and understand the life of Elagabalus are extremely hostile towards him, and therefore cannot be taken at face value. We don’t have any direct evidence from Elagabalus himself of his own words.
"There are many examples in Roman literature of times where effeminate language and words were used as a way of criticising or weakening a political figure.
"References to Elagabalus wearing makeup, wigs and removing body hair may have been written in order to undermine the unpopular emperor.”
Dr Malik added that whilst Romans were aware of gender fluidity, and there are examples of pronouns being changed in literature, it “was usually used in reference to myth and religion, rather than to describe living people”.
I’d also like to note that the Ancient sources about Elagabalus were, frequently, very racist (Elagabalus was from modern day Syria) and as a result I’m personally a bit suspect of any coverage that doesn’t mention the racial aspect.
Universal basic income is essential if we want to build a bright future in the age of automation.
Seriously. The 40-hour work week was codified in 1940, before computers did anything. Per-hour productivity has more than quadrupled since then, but we’re working even harder, to live not all that much better. It’s absurd.
No, it’s not absurd, it’s deliberate. The ruling class wants us to work as hard as possible, so they have profits to skim and pile up.
I’ll reblog this every time I see it: Before the 40 hour work week, we had the 80 hour work week, the 100 hour work week. What got us 40 hours? Unions. Want a work week that reflects productivity levels? Unions. Want UBI? Unions.

an unfortunate side effect of growing up autistic is that everyone always mistook my bluntness for rudeness n now whenever I do any sort business communication I overcompensate for my default absence of tact by speaking like a late 19th century dandy. this appears to be something I am unable to turn off despite my many efforts
Whenever Americans use Cryillic like. That. I just. Instantly shrivel up an cry
Like idk how to tell you this but н isnt h and и isnt n
It’s true and you should say it.
Я isnt R
Р isnt P
В isnt B
If you want to explain, what does it mean then? 0.0
н makes n sound,и makes ee sound, я makes ya sound, р makes r sound, в makes v sound
you mean, like, ня?
oh no. It can be made with Cyrillic now
ня
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE, YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE EXPLAINED
НЯ

OH. GOD.
THATS SO FUNNY
Where’s that post about the guy who used ß (German Eszett, aka “double s”) as an “aesthetic B” in his username and ended up naming himself “SsillySsadass?”
not having a dni or “Xs don’t interact” in my bio is great. i do actually have a list of criteria that results in an immediate block upon me finding out i just like being the one bringing down the hammer
Something I think ppl who aren’t used to it struggle with when it comes to ancient history is that frequently ‘we do not and cannot know this’ is the only truthful response a historian can give. People severely overestimate how much we actually know about Ancient Rome.
I remember talking to someone at a party once about the debate over Septimius Severus’s ethnicity (whole other can of worms) and they asked if genetic testing of his remains was not a way to settle it and I was like oh. Oh okay you are under the impression we have the physical remains of Roman emperors from the second century AD alright then. (We. Do not.)
Can’t stress how much of high level study of Ancient History is devoted to trying to make sense of what actually factually happened. When I was at university (10+ years ago now) the discipline was embroiled in the lengthy and ongoing process of trying to unpack not just the biases in ancient sources but the centuries & centuries of biases within the field itself. I don’t imagine this process is ever going to Stop. It’s not uncommon for historical accounts to be so garbled & contradictory that it’s not possible to reconstruct the real events behind them.
Once in an introductory lecture one of my professors was talking about this problem and articulated it very simply as 'we know real things happened between real people, but we aren’t sure what they were’. Sums it up really!!
