You know I gotta learn shitpost brevity. Most of my successful posts are like 3 paragraph essays, minimum. Fucking dissertations. Terrible note-to-word ratio. Inefficient. In this economy? In this economy? Unsustainable. Everyone else posting “blowing my balls up at the bomb factory” and getting 50,000 notes. Amazing ROI. They’re the future and I’m on dial-up. The market’s gonna out-compete me.

The thing about Cottagecore is that is a fetishized aesthetic of country life, divorced from labor and idealized by a primarily urban audience with a backward looking ethos of tradition. They are not prepared for the stresses of a rural life: farming; harvesting; tapping pumpkins to ensure none of them have been replaced with flesh; losing out on income by having to use one of your pigs in a blood sacrifice to paint protective sigils over your doors and windows; checking cracks and chimneys for the flesh-vines of the Pumpkin Lord; having to decide, before the Growth is complete, whether that’s really your tradwife or an amassment of vines, leaves, and blood in the shape of your tradwife; ignoring their desperate pleas that “I’m me! No! No!” as you burn them alive, realizing too late you picked wrong; and the exploitative corporate nature of commercial farming in 2024. All seen through a deeply colonial lens, of course

oh i see. the problem with some people’s intersectionality is that they see the misogyny experienced by white or cis women as Pure Misogyny untouched by race or gender modality, which creates the idea that there is any pure form of oppression untouched by the other aspects of the experiencer. they don’t understand that white + cis women’s experiences with misogyny don’t just lack racism or transphobia, but in fact have traits unique to their white + cis womanhoods.

fucking adhd. I have to run a con on my own brain to get anything done.

I’m staging everything I’ll need to do paperwork and a stressful phone call, real sneaky-like so as not to alert my brain to the plan. Going into the kitchen for coffee and casually turning on my computer as I pass. Telling myself I’m just picking up these papers so I don’t step on them. Planting my favorite pen in a strategic position.

Later, I’ll subtly imply that completing this task is quick, it’s easy, and it’s free. And then I’ll see everything laid out and think “well, surely a little 5-minute trial run won’t hurt, and of course I can stop if I want to.” and that’s when the bear traps will be activated.

and maybe you’re thinking nobody would fall for that but lemme tell ya: I know the mark and he’s a real goober. you can trick him into taking pills just by placing them on top of a package of mint oreos. he doesn’t even question it, just finds the pills on his way to the cookies and goes “sure, why not?”

This post is how I found out my wife insists on keeping her meds in the tea drawer because she actively likes making me tea in the morning and so she had to put the pill cassette between herself and the tea.

being terrified of your friends finding out you have riveting opinions like “trans men experience oppression specifically for their gender” is honestly exhausting

it’s literally just ace discourse but people who never bought into that exclusionism think it’s cool this time

hearing “I’m gonna become a baeddel” from people you heard mocking exclusionism in ace discourse and bi lesbian discourse and transmed discourse when it’s literally the same shit just. hurts. why is it me you forfeit your morals over? why now?

and a reminder: this is how exclusionism functions

it’s the same mindset, the same reasoning, the same arguments, the same tactics over and over and over again. this isn’t a flaw, it’s a part of the design

because it’s Looking for people who are susceptible to the Mindset, but haven’t been shown an “"acceptable”“ victim yet.

people who know that you’re not supposed to hate trans women or gay people or ace people or- eventually there will come a kind of person that you Don’t understand. that’s different from you, or that you have complicated feelings towards, or that you’ve never heard of.

and people who Only know that exclusionism is bad because of the Specific Victims being targeted are vulnerable to this. can be lied to, can be manipulated.

and what makes this scary is that once someone has bought into the Mindset the Victim Can Be Changed.

ace exclusionism was a terf recruiting tactic. this is a known fact. terfs were Openly courting ace exclusionists, they Openly spread ace exclusionist rhetoric, there were terfs who came out and said that they were drawn into it Through ace exclusionism.

it was to the point that a terf post would gain some steam, and within a day the Literal Exact Same Post would show up in the ace exclusionism tag with "ace people” swapped out with “trans women.”

your friends that were willing to stand up for ace people once upon a time might not be willing to do the same in a few years if they’re walking down the exclusionism path now. it’s Easier than some people would like to admit to go from hating one kind of trans person to hating All trans people.

and that’s exactly Why it’s important to understand how exclusionism works, how radfem rhetoric works. it’s not enough to just hate a specific kind of exclusionism or to recognize that it’s wrong to hurt a specific kind of victim. because the Methods, the Mindsets, the talking points, they’re Fundamentally harmful. and you Can be tricked by them if you don’t know what to look for.

i love how TERFs only talk nice about trans men they assume to be attracted to women because they can promise them this shiny wonderful world where you can be a good moral lesbian surrounded by other women :) and they just have nothing kind to say about gay trans men because what are they gonna offer. they hate men and they reject the idea it (dating men) can ever be happy or fulfilling and it doesn’t jive with their whole female separatism shtick. it becomes blatantly transparent that the way they talk about trans men has less to do with actual “cause” of transmasculinity and a lot more to do with how they can craft a narrative around transmasculinity that supports their beliefs & pushes transmascs into their conversion therapy efforts

gender essentialism is what happens when you hear about gender being a social construct and a performance, but don’t actually want to stop viewing men and women as inherent opposites. so now instead of saying “women are x and men are y, because biology” you say “women are x and men are y…. because socialization!” & change literally. nothing. else. about how you talk about gender

& to be clear im not just talking about people who think trans women & NB people AMAB are forever tainted by male socialization. I’m also talking about people who do this in gender affirming ways. you are not immune to acting like being a certain gender means you will forever have certain traits, and that those treats are inherent to being that gender, just because you don’t misgender trans people.

gender socialization should be used to talk about how gender is taught to us, both as collectives and individuals who each have unique relationships to gender. it should not mean “if you are raised as a boy or saw yourself as a boy it means you are a predatory self centered chauvinist forever and ever” that’s just. fucking ridiculous. what’s the point of saying gender is a construct and performed and shit if you are gonna act like this process occurs exactly Once in your life and then you are stuck with whatever magical gender traits society threw at you forever. I’m sorry one day y'all are gonna have to actually fully internalize that people who are men and people who are women are not different species

ppl will literally be like “socialization doesn’t exist, being amab doesn’t make u inherently violent and misogynistic!!!!!!!!!!!! identifying as a man does :)” like u literally just took the same patriarchal structure of gender and transposed it. “men are inherently violent and misogynistic” is incorrect whether you mean “amab ppl”, “ppl socialized as men”, or “ppl who identify as men.” there is literally no unproblematic way to claim a whole demographic of people is inherently violent and misogynistic.

we all have shit to unlearn because we all grew up in a sexist and misogynistic society. and each of us are going to have our own unique experience with contributing to and suffering under patriarchy, especially trans people. what’s important is knowing yourself, being honest with yourself, and always doing your best to treat others well.

Well, sure, you do you.

But not all of us. A lot of us are *completely* non-partnering. There’s loveless aros. Aplatonic aros. Hell, even heartless is a label some aros use!

We don’t need to do anything to “replace” the romantic relationships we don’t have. People can be completely happy alone! Without a partner! (Shocking, I know!)

I’m just a bit tired of all the amatonormativity I still see under some of the trending aro-positivity posts…

Is there a chance Tumblr could make a "custom feeds" system, like reddit and twitter has? The point is to add accounts (or subreddits, or hashtags) in this or that list, and instead of going to your regular dashboard, you can go to this special list you made.

I personally would use that to put all the tornament accounts I follow (seriously, I must have over 50 that are active right now) into one list, I'd have one list for activism, I'd have one list for my fandoms...

I also picture people use this to sort by mood, like one list for when they need cute things, one for when need to laugh, one for when they want to debate with people...

Interesting question, and this isn’t the first time we have looked at this.

You can catch the wider discussion here for all the details, but in short, we are delighted to show you all a demo of this “blogpack” feature which you can find right here!

So, if you’re on web, you can edit the URL to list what blogs posts you want in the feed. Consider it another secret feed for you good folk that will hopefully get turned into a real feature someday…

Thanks for your feedback, and have a lovely day!

Love,

Tumblr is not getting rid of the chronological Dashboard!

Folks keep sending this feedback in, I’ve replied to 108 in the last hour, so I figured I’d write a post. Please reblog this, thank you!

Rest assured, [tumblr] is not getting rid of the chronological feed of blogs you follow. For details, please see this update from Staff over a week ago.

We also mentioned this on Changes the day after. Please do follow @changes, it only posts twice a week and is the best way to stay informed. (BTW, a lot of you are blocking Changes, WTF is up with that?)

As for algorithms, we actually have several already in use, and those are the ones we’re working to improve. You can see them under the For You tab, and turn them on or off for your Dashboard via the “Include posts liked by the blogs you follow,” “Best stuff first,” and “Based on your likes” toggles in your Dashboard settings.

With those three toggled off, which will always be an option, your Dashboard feed will be solely posts from the blogs you follow sorted chronologically from newest to oldest.

If you have any other feedback, please use the Feedback category in the support form. Submitting feedback there is like a firehose directly to our developers and designers. (Please of course be mindful of signal to noise. I know a firehose is tempting to abuse, but the more nonconstructive feedback we get, the harder it is to see the constructive feedback.)

And, of course, please stop sending concerns about removing the chronological feed. We are not removing the chronological feed of blogs you follow, we never will, and we never planned to.

Thanks!

calware:

btw, if you dislike any of these new changes that tumblr is implementing, please visit https://www.tumblr.com/support and select the “Feedback” option and write about the change you don’t like. Even if it’s just a simple “i don’t like x change because y. this makes my experience on tumblr significantly worse. please either reverse this change or make it optional” it’s better than not giving any feedback at all!

The Dublin spire isn’t a bad looking landmark per se but why does it look like it was specifically designed to pop blimps

It looks like whoever designed this hates balloons.

It’s a 120 meter tall stainless steel spike. Can’t go in it.

this looks like it was designed specifically so you could trip a kaiju and impale them with it

I used to hate it, but it actually makes more sense when you’re actually in/moving around Dublin lol.

Most buildings in Dublin are less than 5 storeys high, so you can see the Spire from most of the city centre, and get to the rest of the city from it fairly easily.

The Spire is designed so it works as a landmark you can see from almost anywhere.

Before Google Maps was really a thing, and even now it is, you could use it as a physical reference point to move around the city, and you’re kind of drawn to it one way or the other naturally. It’s kind of a giant IRL map pin.

That means there’s always a group of people at the base; teenagers meeting up with their buddies before setting off for the day, tour groups, folks from out of town just off the bus waiting their friends, and - my perpetual favourite - well dressed people with visible nerves trying to act cool as they wait for their dates.

So rather than a blimp defense system, think of it more like a spawn point.

Also when there’s a Star Wars movie they turn it into a lightsaber.

for those interested, this is a good example of how “Major structure you can see from everywhere” is a good thing for cities. The needle, though maybe not loved by everyone, is exactly as EJF says - a navigational reference point.

If you were ever lost, you could look for the needle and identify a major spot in the city. This can help avoid getting turned around (since you can track your direction in reference to a single point) , or provide a known spot to return to if you get disoriented.

This would also mean that if someone was new, they could learn the directions from the needle to where they were staying, and then travel the rest of the city with confidence that they can find their way back when they are done.

Water towers can serve a similar purpose in smaller towns, which is one of the reasons why they’re often kept, even when no longer used for storing water.

In conclusion, make fun of how it looks all you want, but this giant needle is now part of vital city infrastructure.

if it’s stupid and it works it’s not stupid

teaching yourself how to deal with mildly annoying inconveniences is imo an essential part of treating the disabled people around you with compassion and no i’m not kidding

sometimes you have to share a public space with someone who has loud verbal tics. sometimes a chronically ill friend will have to cancel plans because of a flare up even if you were really looking forward to hanging out with them. sometimes an autistic person will talk over you or interrupt you because they missed a particular cue. sometimes people who struggle to take care of themselves will smell bad. sometimes people with intellectual disabilities will need you to give them more detailed, patient instructions, even if it seems simple to you. sometimes you will need to give up your seat on the bus for a physically disabled person even if you don’t want to move.

accommodating disabled people is not always easy or comfortable; being an ally means doing it anyway.
