Going through the pile of books to go to charity shops and there’s this amazing kids history one that’s literally like

Give your friend a neolithic burial

Exactly

I’m so glad this post is finally reaching the people it was meant for; weird little kids who liked playing history and death

The book also had instructions for making a paper replica of a mammoth bone/hide hut 🦣 🛖 and I was never allowed to take over the living room and do it

Reblog to give your mutuals a neolithic burial 🦴🌼⚱️🗡️

oooo ok these are actually so cool tho some of them would be covered in animal hides and the hides weighed down with rocks around the edges and also some would be lost to time and then other burials would be done over the top of them making it hard for archaeologists to determine what time periods things are from and its so cool!

it’s okay to do things that make your symptoms worse (as long as you’ll stay safe)

every once in a while you need to eat something yummy. or go on a walk. or a trip to the zoo. take a hot shower. cry your eyes out. dance. listen to music. draw for way to long. write. laugh. sit in a cafe with a friend. paint your nails. dye your hair. go on a run. pet a cat

sometimes you need to do things that are cathartic or make yourself feel alive. sometimes you need the reminder of why you’re fighting so hard to stay alive

this is your reminder that just because it makes your symptoms worse, it isn’t always the wrong thing to do. there can be value in these actions

If you think about it too, abled people do it all the time. Deciding to drink to excess at a party knowing they’ll have a hangover. Going to a theme park knowing walking all day is going to hurt their feet by the end. We have the right to make those same decisions.

This is called Dignity of Risk, and it’s an important concept in disability justice.

Everyone weighs their physical and mental/emotional health against one another in constantly shifting balance; inevitably, there are times when we choose to accept consequences to one for the sake of the other.

Infantilsing us by undermining our agency in the name of “protection” or “care” is yet another way that we are disabled by society.

yall better be just as outraged about this as you were about notre dame

This is even WORSE.

To elaborate why this is worse:

Art and religion are all well and good. But information can be critical. When libraries burn, information can be lost forever. Because we photograph art. We have blueprints of the Cathedral. The Notre Dame cathedral did not burn to the ground, only the wooden structures did.

The entire library and everything within is gone here.

Another reason this is worse? It was DELIBERATE. It was bombed. Accidents like Notre Dame happen all the time. But bombings don’t have to happen.

So yeah, if you cared about Notre Dame, logically you should care about this too,

UPS has reached an agreement with the Teamsters union to equip its iconic brown delivery trucks with air conditioning for the first time for new units.

The agreement, announced by UPS on Tuesday, comes as the delivery giant and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters negotiate the terms of a new contract for more than 330,000 U.S. employees. (source)

Unions work, unionize.

THEY DIDN’T HAVE AC?!

Nope! And the UPS headquarters is in the south, right in Atlanta! They fucking knew how hot it was, and still wouldn’t spend the money to give their workers basic fucking accommodations for making deliveries!

Make more demands of your employers! They won’t give you jack shit if you don’t!

Good God this seems like it could kill somebody. Imagine driving around for an entire work shift in the Atlanta heat.

Jsyk USPS (post office) drivers also don’t have AC in the LLVs. So. You know. That’s something to be aware of. I delivered for just under a year there and got the worst of both summer and winter in Georgia without AC or effective heat.

I don’t know how to explain to people that, in any other country, Biden would be a conservative and somehow most Americans have been convinced he’s a commie.

The horrors of realizing that the American Far Right is further right than you thought

The horrors of realizing that America’s “left” is your “far right” and America’s “far left” is your “center” and centrist Americans believe their “far left” is no better than their “far right” because they believe in horseshoe theory.

I like how it’s described as a union could “cripple American Capitalism” when more precisely it’s just that a union would be so powerful as to force WalMart (or any other company) to pay their workers like human beings. That’s not going to break Walmart. They’ll barely notice.

They’ve successfully convinced us that the unions are the greedy monsters. For so many years, the companies have painted unions as “we want you to pay janitors three million dollars a year and if you don’t we’ll set your stores on fire”.

But it’s more like “We want you to take an almost imperceptible fraction of your bountiful profits and use it to make your employees’ live marginally better, and maybe give them medical benefits, y’know, so they don’t die”.

Big companies did not stop hiring ten year olds to work in coal mines because they just woke up one day and said “my god, we’re monsters”. They did it because their workers stood together and said “really, enough of this crap”.

Companies are not going to give people raises unless it’s economically necessary that they do so. Anything they can do to lower their expenses, and raise their profits, they are going to do. And no one person can stop them.

But thousands of people, millions of people? Better chances.

I am dead serious: If you are a Walmart employee, at any level and in any store — like if you are a high school kid with a part time job stocking shelves — message me any question you have about unions. Like ask me “What’s a union” if you want. I will explain it to you.

I am a grievance chair for a white collar union whose workplace only unionized within the last five years and whose management fought as every step of the way, but in the end we fucking won. It can be done, and I can tell you how.

speakingwithaghost:

socialistsephardi:

To anyone that wants to claim it wouldn’t work:

Just another reminder that Walmart Germany was a spectacular fail because of ver.di (which is a national service trade union that has it’s control over almost all trade and service companies in Germany) among other things.

Like, ver.di essentially came up to the CEO of Walmart Germany and was like “Hi, welcome, we wish you the best and that we can work together well :)” and the dude was like “hahaha no” and tried to pull the american concept here so ver.di pulled out a list of all the breaches of german law that Walmart was doing (underpaying workers, trying to avoid paying health care by using part-timers, trying to be open for more than 80 hours per week, firing people on short notice without warning or exit payments, etc) and long story short, they got some massive hefty fines for it. They also set up a list of demands for the workers and organized national strikes to push them through, making the employees of 85 hypermarkets neatly stand in front of the store doors with signs, whistles and chants (and certainly not the “Wallmart! Wallmart!” chant). In the end, that plus other things caused them to bail after 9 years with a gigantic loss (almost a billion just from sales) from one of the best retail markets in the world.

So all those issues like “no healthcare” or “work full-time and need food stamps” or “work on sundays and holidays” and shit? Unions are there to set their foot down against that for you. They are there to keep you safe from the corps wrath while fighting for your rights.

Cause if you, an individual, complain, they just fire you and laugh about it. A union is a collection of hundreds up to MILLIONS of people, supported by lawyers, going against employers for you.

In Denmark, due to union negotiations & refusal to work for slave wages, the McDonald’s basic pay comes out to about $20 US / Hour. The big mac there costs about 60 cents more.

How does the quote go?

Don’t thank god for Friday’s; thank unions.

Reblog if you think janitors should be paid $3million a year or want to burn down a Walmart

They’ve found the cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Babies who die of SIDS have a significantly lower level of an enzyme, the purpose of which is to rouse the baby from sleep if necessary (such as the baby stops breathing). This is extremely huge science and medicine news. There is a biological reason. It’s not random.

Previously, parents were told SIDS could be prevented if they took proper precautions: laying babies on their backs, not letting them overheat and keeping all toys and blankets out of the crib were a few of the most important preventative steps. So, when SIDS still occurred, parents were left with immense guilt, wondering if they could have prevented their baby’s death.

Dr. Carmel Harrington, the lead researcher for the study, was one of these parents. Her son unexpectedly and suddenly died as an infant 29 years ago. (…) Harrington explained what she was told about the cause of her child’s death.

“Nobody could tell me. They just said it’s a tragedy. But it was a tragedy that didn’t sit well with my scientific brain.”

Since then, she’s worked to find the cause of SIDS, both for herself and for the medical community as a whole. She went on to explain why this discovery is so important for parents whose babies suffered from SIDS.

"These families can now live with the knowledge that this was not their fault,” she said.

(…) As the cause is now known, researchers can turn their attention to a solution. In the next few years, those in the medical community who have studied SIDS will likely work on a screening test to identify babies who are at risk for SIDS and hopefully prevent it altogether.

Art Tips | Line Weight

Hello, I didn’t make it in time but I still wanted to share this short guide on applying varying line weight onto a drawing.

In my first year of art college, drawing class was like a treasure trove of new tips and knowledge which I looked forward to every week. I used to only draw either very lightly overall or with the same intensity and no variation in my lines.

But one of the first things introduced to us in drawing class was how to vary our lines and mark making to capture light and shadow through just our line drawings. I never noticed the big difference it made to drawing only in a line with the same weight or which was uniform in pressure. I saw how it added more depth and fluidity to the character or subject making them less flat and stiff overall.

So ever since then I have tried to observe more and make thoughtful decisions of where I can play with the pressure of my lines while drawing.

Hope this is helpful! :)

Green, yelling: Aaah!
Blue: I can't believe you're scared of spiders.

Green frowns, looking at Blue.
Green: I'm not scared, I just don't want them touching me.
Blue: Huh.

Green turns back towards the spider, addressing it.
Green: And the feeling is mutual. Hey spider, how do you feel about touching me?

Blue turns his eyes from Green to the spider as the spider answers.
Spider: The thought alone makes me shiver with disgust.
Green: Thank you.ALT

Not having a job is not a moral failure. Being a “basement dweller” is not a moral failure. Neither is living with your parents or being dependent on your family or partner(s) or being housebound.

Capitalism has tricked you into believing that your only value in this world is how much money you can make for someone else. It has also tricked you into seeing “unproductive” people, especially disabled people, as drains on a society literally built to help take care of them.

Jobless people are not your enemies. Disabled people are not your enemies. Get over yourself.

Funniest thing in the whole wide world is opening a completed fic and seeing the author’s note for the first chapter say something like “unlike my other fics, this will be a shorter one! Expect it to be complete within three months or so” and then you look at the stats and the fic is 100k+ words and took two years to finish

Second funniest thing is progressing through a fic and reading the authors notes and every three or so chapters they’re like “you might have noticed the chapter count has increased from five to eight! Some scenes have gotten away from me” and “okay so the chapter count is updated from 14 to 19. just. just ignore that” and the actual completed fic is 37 chapters long
