From The Very Black Project Page- William Dorsey Swann was a gay liberation activist. Born into slavery in 1858, he was the first person in the United States to lead a queer resistance group and the first known person to self-identify as a “queen of drag”. Imagine the queenery of this icon.
He was a slave in Hancock, Maryland and was freed by Union soldiers after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. During the 1880s and 1890s, he organized a series of balls in Washington, D.C. He called himself the “queen of drag”. Most of the attendees his gatherings were men who were former slaves, and were gathering to dance in their satin and silk dresses. William was arrested in police raids numerous times,including in the first documented case of arrests for female impersonation in the United States, on April 12, 1888. In 1896, he was falsely convicted and sentenced to 10 months in jail for “keeping a disorderly house” (running a brothel). After his sentencing, he requested a pardon from President Grover Cleveland. This request was denied, but but he was the first American on record who pursued legal and political action to defend the LGBTQ community’s right to gather.
He was known to have been close with Pierce Lafayette and Felix Hall, two men who had also both been slaves and who formed the first known male same-sex relationship between enslaved Americans.
When William stopped organizing and participating in drag events, his brother continued to make costumes for the drag community. Two of his brothers had also been active participants in his drag balls.
Imagine how intelligent and ambitious this man had to be to come up with drag balls in the 1800s! Imagine how many terrible concepts he had to unlearn by himself to be a confident gay black man who does drag in the 1800s! Imagine how courageous he had to be to fight for lgbt people as a former slave in America in the 1800s!

Today I had the spoons to hunt down my neighborhood council’s email and send them an email that basically said “I would like to be able to leave my house but my neighborhood is not wheelchair accessible. Who do I talk to in order to get this fixed?” And I am planning on hunting down whoever is in charge of sidewalks in my neighborhood and getting real annoying about it.
My plan is to email them every time I want to go somewhere but can’t.
Email 1: hello, please fix sidewalks so I can ride the bus places I am very passionate about public transportation and also being able to leave my house.
Email 200: This morning I woke up and wanted some delicious coffee to start my day, but upon getting out of bed I discovered we were out of coffee. I would’ve liked to take advantage of the city’s public transportation system in order to support a local business like [examples of local coffee shops] but alas I cannot because I am a wheelchair user and my neighborhood is not wheelchair accessible. [Insert rest of arguement RE accessibility]. In conclusion I don’t work I can keep these emails coming until I die please just fix my sidewalks.
This is going to be my new spite hobby. I was already mad about the abuse and general shit hand the disabled get dealt in our culture but then I started using a wheelchair and places like doctor’s offices have been inaccessible to me so now I am filled with rage. So I am going to take that rage and do something with it. Like emailing my city counsel representatives at 2 am like “I crave a moonlight walk fix my sidewalks please.”

You guys I had this whole fucking bit planned. I was gonna pathetically beg for notes for months. It was gonna be a whole progressively building thing. But you guys were, and I say this with complete affection, so fucking annoying to me personally and to everyone who follows you. Again, I really phoned this in. Some of you guys were just like “what if I replied every letter of the alphabet one at a time and then did it again.” And then reblogged it 30 times. That’s so much work to make some numbers go up and again so annoying to so many people. You all should be proud. I did literally ask for this. Your weird level of work made me feel connected to a sea of strangers who wanted me to succeed but also, and again I say this with affection and love, annoyed me deeply along the way.

I’m not the first to mention this, but one bit that I thought was really clever in Steven Universe is the ways in which the show subtly justifies the cartoonism of the principle cast always wearing the same outfit for ease-of-animation purposes. The gems are a gimme in that they’re all hardlight-projections, and even before that’s solidified as a plot point they’re otherworldly and superheroic enough that you don’t really think to question it. But Steven canonically just owns hundreds and hundreds of those star shirts, which are leftover merchandise from his father’s fizzled-out career as a rock star. Into which you can read a whole bunch of other stuff if you really want to, right? And I do want to. It’s reflective of Greg’s misplaced optimism that he got hundreds of those made in the first place, and it’s a benign but visible example of how Steven’s life is shaped by the knock-on effects of decisions his parents made before he was even alive. He’s got his mother’s superpowers and he’s wearing his father’s shirts.
Taking this afterthought I had out of the tags- I actually checked the wiki to make sure I wasn’t imagining this, and yeah, most of the other human characters have at least subtle changes to their character models in each episode, but special attention to Connie, who’s got a different outfit basically every time she shows up, and moreover actually has a notable shift in the kind of outfit she prefers as the series progresses. She’s got room to evolve and explore aesthetically in a way that Steven doesn’t, because as much as she’s “part of his universe,” she has somewhere to go home to. She can clock out. She has other stuff going on in her life. And Steven literally isn’t visibly aging for the first two seasons and change because he doesn’t know that he’s supposed to.
