Twitter/X Post states: Police are trampling the candles we brought to honor the 11,200 plus Palestinians that have been killed since October 7th [Image Description: Image of a cop surrounding small, tealit candles that have been stomped on and kicked to the side]. I have provided a video below this this cop doing this, and the person who originally posted on X/Twitter about this, scold the cop for desecrating and destroying a memorial for those who have been killed by the IOF/Israeli military.ALT

this cop also did this to another protestor:

Twitter/X user states in their post: The cop kicking memorial candles for Palestinians is the same one who started pepper spraying Jewish activists. [image description: a person, on the right, was pepper sprayed by the same officer in the video I spoke about, and with whom this X/Twitter user is referring to. He is surrounded by his colleagues, who aren't helping stop this violent act of pepper spraying, and are standing by.]ALT

i remember when Instagram mostly banned me from my account for an entire year after posting about police brutality and its’ links to white supremacy and institutionalized violence -it was during the height of the BLM movement after George Floyd was murdered. i remember calling out ex-co-workers at the time and people on social media i was mutuals with at the time for saying ‘but it’s not all cops, some are good,’ and my response to that, and will always be: policing systems do MORE harm than good in communities. cops get little to zero training and are allowed to bear arms and have a licences to maim, injure, and kill people (most of whom, are NOT threats). and it’s beyond unacceptable. the amount of funding these fucking systems get too when it can be allocated to programs that ACTUALLY do good.

defund the police.

end the occupation and free palestine!

*also, a few people have noted this, but yes, I believe it appears that the cop spat on the memorial candles too. and the fact he will never be fired and told to give up his badge for doing such a heinous thing is just despicable* -and yes all cops are bad.

Hello, pause for a sec.

Many places are removing masking requirements. And I’m here to ask, if you are young and able-bodied, please keep wearing a mask anyways. We’ve known for two years that masks protect others more than they protect yourself, and that masks work when most people are wearing them. If only at-risk individuals are masking, they’re more at risk.

Protect others. Help disabled people exist safely in public. Wear a mask.

Do you think $10,000 USD is a lot? How long would it take you to spend that if you were using it liberally? Could you possibly spend it in one day? Perhaps. But could you spend $10,000 every day for the rest of your life without finding some way to effectively just burn it? I don’t think I could.

But if you could, if you were forced to spend $10k every day of your life from the day you were born until you were 100 you would be spending $365.25 million which is a lot of money but theoretically that is an extreme overestimate of how much money you would need in your lifetime to live very comfortably assuming you have to spend that much from birth to death at 100 (average of lifespan is early 80s).

I see no possible reason for any individual to ever need that much money and yet we have billionaires. Why? They truly cannot spend all their money in their lives and they are still accruing more (partially because of there massive income but also ironically once you get rich enough you have enough influence you can stop paying for a bunch of shit which is super backwards). To spend $1B at this rate of $10k a day would take 273 years, three lifetimes. Meaning down to their great grandkids are far more than set for life even if their family earns no more money whatsoever.

$365.25M is the absolute most any person could ever possibly use and yet people like elongated muskrat have HUNDREDS of times this amount. I know it really goes without saying but what the actual fuck is wrong with these people? Not just that musky cunt but he’s the easiest punching bag atm.

Tiers of “heroes don’t kill people, but we still want the villain to die because something something justice” in ascending order of “well, technically”:

  1. Hero simply leaves; villain coincidentally killed shortly thereafter by something unrelated. Example: murdered by treacherous minions.
  2. Villain accidentally kills self while attempting to harm hero. Example: shoots at hero, misses, struck by improbable ricochet.
  3. Hero and villain’s conflict leads to perilous locale from which only hero escapes. Example: fighting on train tracks, villain hit by train.
  4. Villain defeated non-lethally; dies anyway due to unpredictable or outside factors. Example: villain disarmed, dies of magic curse.
  5. Hero employs lethal force, but that isn’t what kills villain. Example: villain evades hero’s attack and falls off cliff.
  6. Hero deliberately employs environmental hazard to kill villain. Example: hero throws villain into live electrical wires.
  7. Hero apparently kills villain; later developments reveal villain survived and was killed by something else. Example: hero kicks villain off cliff; post-credits bonus scene shows them getting up and walking away, then getting eaten by a bear.

you forgot the main one where the hero shows he isn’t a blood thirsty dude out for vengeance by trying to save the villain last second, but the villain rejects this and voluntarily submits to whatever was about to kill them

That’s more of a sub-trope – it can land anywhere from tiers 2 to 5 depending on how exactly the villain got to be in that predicament in the first place.

You know what I found out?

December 10th is International Human rights day.

This year it will be the 75th anniversary of the creation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

… 75 years…

The same amount of time as the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestine.

One of the most horrific ongoing human rights violations, started the the same year the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was created.

One that the world is trying to ignore and silence people from speaking about.

Israel is illegally occupying and killing Palestinians.

It is a genocide.

And it’s not just Palestinians.

Sudanese, Congolese, Armenian’s, Kashmiri, Tigrayans, Uyghurs, and many many others are undergoing their own genocides and denial of basic human rights.

And places like Israel, the UK, the US are complicit and funding them.

None of these tragedies occur in a vaccum.

Don’t let the world forget what’s going on.

Don’t let them brush these atrocities off as they celebrate this day.

On a day celebrating human rights, we need to discuss who is being denied there human rights.

The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine - Ilan Pappé (2006)

one-in-boots:

Thousands of little boys and girls dream of exploring and charting the world. But then they wake up and look at a map. All the islands are already on there.

Thousands of little boys and girls look up at the moon, then sigh, knowing we’ve already been on there.

In a hundred years, thousands of little boys and girls are going to look at old images of the woods, or the plains, or the sea, and wish they could’ve been there to discover new species, but then they open up thier biology books, and all the creatures are already on there.

BUT!!

In the year of our lord 2023, I can open up wikispecies, go to marasmius or agaricus or fucking amanita, and see twenty orange links for pages that haven’t been created yet AND I KNOW THAT’S ONLY THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG.

I can literally go out into the woods and pick any random amanita, and there’s better than a 50/50 chance it’s undescribed or has had zero research done.

We are in the middle of the genetic revolution!! There are hundreds of species out there, and we can still discover them, and study them, and cherish them knowing we are the first!! This is the perfect time for me to be alive.

I have my life’s work cut out for me. And you are free to live this aswell. We will need an army of people to find everything there is, and there will still be things missing.

GO DISCOVER!!!

opencommunion:

“I was there and I know how hard it is in captivity,“ said Menir. "Every day in captivity was very difficult. I was in a home when there was shelling all around. We were sitting in the tunnels and we were terribly afraid that not Hamas but Israel would kill us, and then they would say, ‘Hamas killed you.’ So, I very much ask as soon as possible to start exchanging the prisoners and everyone should return home. There is no priority [of some over others]. Everyone is important.”

Bar Goldstein told what his family members who returned from captivity in Gaza described to him: "Fortunately, I had the privilege of receiving my sister-in-law Chen [Goldstein Almog] and her children. They were under constant threat from the IDF [Israeli army] shelling.”

… Another captive who was released with her children also expressed anger at the army’s shelling of the location where she was held in Gaza, and that Israeli Apache helicopters had opened fire at them as they were being taken from their home across the border into Gaza.

She said: "The feeling we had there was that no one was doing anything for us. The fact is that I was in a hiding place that was shelled and we had to be smuggled out while we were wounded. Not to mention the helicopter that shot at us on the way to Gaza. You claim that there is intelligence, but the fact is that we were being shelled.”

I would love to see everyone’s art/writing/song making for the General Strike if you’re comfortable with it : )

i made this quickly; i’m not very good at traditional art, but, in summary:

on my father’s side, i am of the darumbal nation in what is now called queensland. in this image, the river separates the darumbal people on one side from the white settlers on the other side. during early settlement, we were curfewed to one side of the river running through our homeland. the settlers would massacre us for fun, for sport, steal our children, and forcibly displace us. we were decimated and our language was almost destroyed. but we survive.

from the river to the sea has been called genocidal, antisemitic, and violently suppressed. but i know the call for liberation it really is. it’s a call for liberation every dispossessed and colonized people knows. someday, soon, palestine will be free from the river to the sea. and so will my homeland, darumbal nation. it is one struggle, one fight.

I think it’s sad that most people always think of bottlenoses as the “classic dolphin” since its the one that’s always used for shows, and always think of dolphins as just straight grey when in reality there’s so many varieties with so many different amazing patterns

Look at the common dolphin! They have a gorgeous X pattern and even some dull yellow/gold!!

Hourglass dolphins have gorgeous white streaks

Spinner dolphins have really pretty banding as well, AND they have a really sleek cute silhouette!

The atlantic spotted dolphin!!! Theyre spotted!!!!!!

and the pantropical spotted too!!

Dusky dolphins have a gorgeous airbrush look going on like straight out of a 2000s fantasy illustration

Striped dolphins sure have stripes!! How cool!!

And these I’ve shown you aren’t even all of them at all, there are so many of them:

There’s so so so many different types of dolphins people dont know about this isnt even all of them and some are SO gorgeous and underrated because people just dont know they exist so I’m here to fix that

māui dolphins are beautiful too! they’re critically endangered and endemic to aotearoa. gorgeous gorgeous creatures

this was cute until i realized the fish is probably trying to not get eaten

A fish trying not to get eaten wouldn’t slow down when the “predator” slows down. It also wouldn’t constantly swim in a circle near the edge of the tank; It’d try hiding. Also a fish in a tank in a a public place that is constantly filled with people is not likely to see people as predators.

Animals, I think people tend to forget, also enjoy playing.

yeah that fish is absolutely playing with that kid, if it really wanted to escape it would just dive into the reef in the center of the tank!

(Moorish Idols are reef fish and naturally will seek shelter in the nearest nook or cranny if they get scared.)

many people don’t realize this, but fish aren’t stupid animals! most of them are on par with mammals like mice and squirrels in terms of intelligence, and they absolutely do play.

I was at an aquarium a few years ago and decided to sketch a fish. It came up to me.

I decided to flip the book around and pressed it against the glass. Fish lost it

Swam away then came back with MORE FISH

to this day I love those little sketches and I really love how I got the fish to bring me it’s friends

Hi! Professional marine biologist and aquarist here- fish absolutely play, and not only that, can be trained.

I accidentally trained a fish once through playing.

Let me explain.

The small-time aquarium I worked at about 4 years ago had a decent sized female Sheephead. Sheephead are bright red with the males sporting a black head, and get big. I’m talking almost 1m long at full maturity (and may or may not transition from female to male depending on the number of males present). Point is, even though not fully matured, this Sheephead was a bit of a heavyweight in her kelp forest tank with a length of about 1ft making her the resident Biggest Dog In The Yard. And she absolutely knew it. She would bully her tankmates if she wanted to steal their food.

The thing about this Sheephead- let’s call her Red- is that she had one heck of a ‘tude. Red was known to splash aquarists whenever they fed the tank, and at almost a foot long with a wide tail, her splashes had quite a bit of heft and would soak you from the torso down. We were advised to bring a towel or two to protect ourselves from most of the drenching. When it was my go-around to feed Red’s tank, I was fairly new to the little facility, but I had been warned in advance of Red’s penchant for food thievery. I noticed she would follow my hand movements, so I slowly moved to drop her food in a far corner, and fed her tankmates directly from my hands or by tong if they were too deep. I always made sure Red had plenty to eat, but I didn’t want her to associate the food with bad behavior, so I treated her to a bit extra food whenever she didn’t steal food. One day, she made a beeline to the surface so fast that she did a small jump, her entire head breaching the water. She wasn’t bothering her tankmates or doing anything remotely dangerous- and full disclosure, it was cute seeing a fish jump for joy- so I laughed and gave her another piece of food.

Naturally, positive reinforcement led to her connecting the dots that jumping at the surface, even the tiny jumps she was doing, meant she got more food.

This started to become an everyday occurrence, whenever I was assigned to feed Red’s tank. She would jump, just enough for her head to pop out, then she’d wait patiently for me to give her the treat she CLEARLY earned. It even got to the point that she’d open her mouth and I’d drop the food right into those massive jaws- this was preferable to her Kenghis Khan-ing her way through a shower of chopped squid like the Tasmanian Devil, as there was less risk of her accidentally (or purposefully) biting a tankmate that got too close. Red became a polite eater for the first time.

It wasn’t until I noticed she followed me around outside of feeding time that I realized Red was playing with me.

I never got splashed by Red even once. My coworkers, however, received quite the dunking whenever it was their turn to feed the kelp tank.

There are many benefits to being a marine biologist

I love hearing from experts when people decide that absolutely EVERYTHING must be cruelty when it comes to people interacting with animals in ANY way.  Sometimes things can just be wholesome folks….

So thanks all you marine biologists!  Keep enjoying those benefits.
