Okay, here’s my idea:

The British should put a time limit on the Monarchy.

Not like declaring a republic tomorrow, but deciding on a date in the future that ends the British Monarchy.

And there’s a perfect date for it coming up!

October 14th, 2066.

A thousand years since the Battle of Hastings. A thousand years of this one specific bloodline ruling England.

Call time on the Monarchy after exactly one thousand years. Nice, and neat.

Even better: Charles isn’t living 44 years. He’ll be gone in about twenty. Now William? He’s what, 40? Yeah, he can live another 44 years. His great grandmother was over a hundred, his granny was 96, William can make it to 84 barring accident or assassination.

So on October 14th 2066, William the Last steps down a thousand years after William the First won the crown.

Nice, neat, and fair. William gets the crown he’s been waiting forty years for already, but ten-year-old George grows up without expectation of it.

Have a nice big abdication ceremony, even.

Plus, what an absolute baller move to announce your regnal name as William the Last.

the Final Bill

I don’t know of the original poster might not be aware

but!

if you’ve been a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking, you can enroll into the address confidentiality program (free of cost!) and be registered to vote as an absentee voter and your name and address will not be made available for the public

it is super easy to get enrolled - the application takes like 5 minutes, but it has to be with someone who is certified to do it (most likely an advocate! try going to a family justice center in your area or calling the Attorney Generals office in your area!!!!)

ALSO :

you don’t need to have any police reports or have a protection order to qualify!!! you just have to sign stating that you’ve been a victim of one of the aforementioned crimes.

we cannot afford to not be normal about pregnant men

like all trans people who can get pregnant need more awareness and support but on an ideological level theres a special focus put on men getting pregnant because its the most visceral offense to cissexism. and it feels clear to me that right wingers are actually a lot more willing to take male pregnancy seriously than a lot of leftists who don’t seem to see it is an important thing to discuss?

Shaun Simmons was harassed and abused while working for Amazon while pregnant

Camdyn Rider was killed by his partner

A Black trans man was arrested because a police officer thought his bump was stolen clothes

Freddy McConnell was denied the right to be his child’s legal father

Thomas Beatie went through so much shit

A trans man had a stillbirth because the hospital didn’t consider pregnancy even though they knew he was trans

I’ve seen people talk about how it will traumatize children to see their trans father’s unnatural, mutilated body and be told he gave birth to them. and how trans fathers will groom their children into the “trans cult.” and i have absolutely seen people advocating for trans fathers being labeled child abusers who should have their children taken away. thats obviously a risk for all trans parents but there is obviously extra vulnerability when it comes to being physically pregnant! as seen with Shaun Simmons, male-presenting trans people are extra vulnerable to workplace abuse while pregnant, leaving them financially vulnerable! i’ve seen trans men talk about being denied emotional support after getting an abortion because they saw it as “removing a tumor”; i imagine trans people suffering postpartum mental illness or health issues are going to have even more difficulty receiving treatment, esp if its related to dysphoria. pretty much all pregnant trans men i’ve seen have talked about being misgendered and othered while getting medical care, being socially isolated once they start showing. we cannot afford to not be normal about pregnant men.

Listening to a podcast discussing conspiracy theories and deconstructing the ideas behind them and it’s reminded me of the coolest practical lessons in critical thinking I ever got, both in high school, both from the same teacher. One was a month long project on who killed jfk in which we could basically present any theory as long as we cited all our reasons and it got us really excited about research and interpretation, but it was the follow up that I liked best.

Our next project she brought us into class and showed us a documentary claiming the moon landing was faked. Gave us worksheets to do that sided with that stance. And at the end of class a bunch of us were like miss wait this doesn’t seem right?? and she said okay, we’ll discuss that next week. The next lesson, she showed us a mythbusters episode countering all the claims of the original documentary and gave us worksheets for that, and another bunch of people went wait miss you can’t teach us two opposing things, which one is right? What do we put on the exam??

So she split the class in two and told us each to present a case based on each side, and to explain why our source was or wasn’t the more reliable of the two. Got us to debate each other directly and use additional sources to back us up and explain why those sources were reliable and should be believed. And because they were randomly assigned there was no guarantee you’d agree with the stance you were presenting, but you had to present it like you did. At the end of the project she asked us all which stance we found more convincing and why, and the majority of us basically said “we think that the moon landing is real because most of the arguments against it seem like someone reacted to a confusing thing without testing it, but when you test it and ask the person running the test to explain the science it makes sense once you have more information. Also, one documentary was made with the help of scientists with qualifications and experience and the other was made by people who don’t have that but like to write mystery books, which looks like a less reliable way to get an answer. But we still dont understand why you showed us both if one is wrong.”

And she was like excellent. You’ve done exactly what you should do. At high school level, we as teachers are expected to filter for the reliable sources for you, so you know to repeat that to pass an exam, but if you want to be historians on your own, I won’t be your teacher any more once you graduate. Lots of people have opinions and theories and research about times in history, and it’s your job to learn how to look at them and decide who you want to trust. This won’t be on the exam, but I need you all to know it. You all did a great job following the school’s instructions to repeat information you were given, but for some of you, that information wasn’t on a reliable foundation. I know you all know how to pass an exam. You’re smart and you’ve been trained to follow these instructions. What you deserve to be taught is how to use all this once you don’t have to do exams any more.

And then as a reward for us doing a good job at figuring out the value of checking your sources’ sources she let us watch Bush get hit in the face with a shoe before we had to go to maths. Shoutout to you Ms Hannah you were a good'un I hope you’re doing well ten years on from that class

official-megumin:

I wanna talk about the loneliness of being trans and intersex.

It’s lonely just growing up trans alone, and the same with intersex.

If you are in any of these groups, you’ll find yourself a stranger to almost everyone around you. But generally you’ll be able to still find big groups filled with people like you.

But the intersection of these two groups is small. And both groups don’t often understand each other.

I think it’s very common for trans people to in times of great pain, consider going back to before you transitioned, especially if you don’t have many people around you.

But if you’re also intersex, especially if you have a condition that’s more impactful and harder to miss.

You don’t have anywhere to return to. And when you look to other trans people, you find no one with bodies like yourself.

You’re not quite trans, and you’re not quite cis. Even among the people you’re supposed to be like, you’re a stranger.

And as someone with an extremely rare intersex condition that also isn’t externally visible. It’s easy to also doubt it is even real, doesn’t matter how much proof you have of it.

But even when the doubt isn’t there, you just can’t find anyone like yourself out there.

It hurts to find myself forgotten in both groups I’m supposed to be apart of. Almost no matter where I go, I’m alone.

Intersex cis people, as much as that might seem contradictory to some.

They don’t grow up constantly being told they aren’t what they claim to be the same way trans people are. No matter how much I want to just ignore my trans exprience and the label. Being trans is still a huge part of how I’ve grown up.

I’ve been beaten belittled and even raped for claiming to be what I am, I can’t just throw that away. But even then, I am not like perisex trans people. My body really does work differently.

My transition once I actually started was nigh instant. I don’t struggle with passing, I don’t struggle with my voice. I don’t struggle with being seen as a woman now, and I barely ever did, even before my transition.

And even though this sounds wonderful to so many trans people who do struggle with these things, and don’t get me wrong. I am infinitely thankful of it.

It also makes me lose out on shared experiences. It still makes me feel alien in trans communities.

The irony of “having it easier” making things harder, it’s not lost on me. And for how much I thought this would make me happy, it has not. Not at all. Instead I just feel more isolated than ever.

…the media’s coverage of these new kinds of prosthetics is so focused on the initial joy or incredulity — on the idea that “lives are changed” — that they forget to ask if these hands are actually useful and what happens in the weeks and months after the unboxing.

The media narrative, says James Young — husband of Ashley and a cyborg himself — is designed to be reassuring to people: If you happen to, God forbid, lose your arm, “they” can replace it. “People want to make sure that the technology is out there that can remake you as you are right now,” he says.

For Alexis Hillard, the creator of the YouTube channel “Stump Kitchen,” the obsession with cyborgs is “continuing to drive that wedge between disenfranchised disabled people and those with money and power, creating a new ‘desirable disabled person.’”

Now that the truce has ended, don’t call for a ‘permanent ceasefire’, call for the end of the occupation. As long as Palestine is occupied, Palestinians will never know peace. Even if the Israeli army left Gaza in this very moment, Palestinians will still face brutal suppression at the hands of the Israeli state. Apartheid laws will still remain. Palestinian children will continue to get kidnapped and tortured in prisons. Armed Israeli settlers will continue to act as shook troops in the Occupied Territories.

The state of Israel must be dismantled and occupation must end for such a permanent ceasefire to happen. Support the end of the occupation.

So connect the Windsor-Quebec Corridor and the Northeast Corridor with HSR, that isn’t that bad of an idea. It doesn’t even need to be that distant dream that is Meglev, just making it fast frequent rail would do it, I would prioritize getting a connection between Boston and Montreal in this system but it is an exciting idea

Anyways the travel times on that map are insane, but it would be a good system still. Anyways here is a picture of the proposal from a geographic map instead of a stylish visual

So anyways I decided to edit this to make it more of an interconnected system but adding Boston to Montreal via Albany and Boston to Toronto via Buffalo as well as a Chicago Connection

fwiw: these maps were made by @segregationbydesign on Twitter, based on an analysis of flight patterns, who does incredible Transit related work. Here are the extensions they proposed:

A picture that says “A student once asked anthropologist Margaret Mead, “What is the earliest sign of civilization? The student expected her to say a clay pot, a grinding stone, or maybe a weapon.

Margaret Mead thought for a moment, then she said, “A healed femur.”

The second picture is a news headline. It is bolded and a much larger font. “27-year-old who couldn’t afford $1,200 insulin copay dies after trying cheaper version.”

The third picture is the same font and size as the Margaret Mead quote. It’s a continuation. It says, “A femur is the longest bone in the body, linking hip to knee. In societies without the benefits of modern medicine, it takes about six weeks of rest for a fractured femur to heal. A healed femur shows that someone cared for the injured person, did their hunting and gathering, stayed with them, and offered physical protection and human companionship until the injury could mend.”

The fourth picture is another headline. It is in a large and bolded type. “Dying man who couldn’t afford to go to hospital after vomiting blood"

The fifth picture is a screenshot of the Margaret Mead story.

Mead explained that where the law of the jungle—the survival of the fittest—rules, no healed femurs are found. The first sign of civilization is compassion, seen in a healed femur.

The next screenshot is of a slightly different font. The letters are pointier and the lines are a little curvier. It says, “Susan Finley returned to her job at a Walmart retail store in Grand Junction Colorado, after having to call in sick because she was recovering from pneumonia.

The day after she returned, the fifty three  year old received her ten year associate award — and was simultaneously laid off, according to her family. She had taken off one day beyond what is permitted by Walmart’s attendance policy.

After losing her job in May 2016, Finley also lost her health insurance coverage and struggled to find a new job. Three months later, Finley was found dead in her apartment after avoiding going to see a doctor for flu-like symptoms.

A screenshot of a bold, bigger headline. It says ‘The house always wins’: Insurers’ record profits.

A final screenshot of smaller text with a slightly gray background. It says “We are at our best when we serve others. Be civilized.” /end ID.]

In the wake of renewed Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, with seemingly no end in sight and countless Palestinian civilians killed, many people are wondering how they can contribute to the effort to prevent more loss of life. And one of the most common phrases shared in calls to action globally is the Palestinian BDS Movement:
Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions

p.s. Boycott all fruits, vegetables, and wines produced in Israel

p.p.s. Tim Hortons (up in Canada) is a sister company to Burger King, who are supplying meals to Israeli soldiers. The Parent Company to both restaurants, Restaurant Brands International, also owns both Popeye’s Chicken and Firehouse Subs as well.

Okay, I was just going to reblog this without commentary, but I can’t keep this to myself. I’m a PhD student in environmental science and this is my fucking highway.

The first published study about climate change (that I am aware of– feel free to point out if there’s an older one) is an 1896 paper by Svante Arrhenius. He pointed out the link between the greenhouse effect and changes in atmospheric CO2.

Plate tectonics, which the geoscience community now recognizes as near indisputable, was a fringe theory until about the 1960s.

Just in case anyone thought that climate change was a “recent fad” in research.

bloglikeanegyptian:

in general there is much “what will israelis do?” and “where will israelis go?” “how can you expect israelis to accept palestinians?” and not

“where will palestinians go after being ethnically cleansed from gaza and the west bank?” “how can palestinians be asked to coexist with the people who stole their land, massacred them and made them refugees for 75 years?” “how can palestinians coexist with people who approve a genocide?” “how can palestinians coexist with people who imprisoned and murdered their children?” “how can palestinians coexist with the people who denied their existence?” “how can palestinians coexist with people who violate every international agreement?” “how can palestinians coexist with an entity that sees their very existence as a threat?”

the demand of palestinians to accept israel after the nakba was a demand for palestinians to show superhuman ability to compromise and they did it. in 1988!!!! and in return they received more violence, more dispossession, more diplomatic and political betrayal, more death. the greatest hasbara trick israelis ever pulled off was convincing the world and their own population that “they offered peace and a two-state solution but palestinians didn’t take it.”

the question has never been “why aren’t palestinians peaceful?” the question has been “why does israel punish palestinians for compromising?”

the answer is that israel does not care for palestinian compromise when it seeks total palestinian domination and dispossession. this is what palestinians are being “asked to make peace with” as though palestinians have any say in peace. it’s also why asking about israel is a distraction and a cruel exercise in false liberal values. israel and the vast majority of the israeli electorate is not a partner capable of making peace or coexisting with. therefore palestinian human rights cannot be contingent on israeli consent. it’s their legal right to return, to live on their own land, to have a state, to be free of occupation. any and all arguments should begin from this basis. it doesnt matter one iota if israelis feel existentially threatened by it and engaging in arguments on this basis is legitimizing their narrative and fear over their tanks and bombs.

existential fear is not a political reality—it is a justification of a political reality. the reality is the genocide of palestinians which is not only an equally legitimate existential fear but a concrete truth. the international community can and should use every single tool at its disposal to force israelis to adhere to international humanitarian law.

instead, the international community enables them. so don’t ask anything of palestinians, least of all about what will happen to israelis, who fear only what they are actively doing to palestinians as we speak.

Furry artists of Tumblr, I am begging you to please use the Community Labels for your NSFW-ish works. In case you don’t know how, here’s tips for mobile:

Tap the button at the bottom right of the New Post screen (highlighted here). This brings up the Community Labels menu. You can then mark your fan art of the Carfax Fox in a jockstrap with his beefy ass hanging out as “Mature.” You can even go one step farther and mark it as “Sexual Themes” if, say, his dick is clearly erect or he’s lactating or something.

On desktop, click the “For Everyone” dropdown at the bottom of the post and go from there.

I’m not saying don’t post your pictures of Rouge the Bat wider than she is tall and showing off her nipple piercings. I’m just begging you to use the provided tools, so you don’t piss off the wrong prude and get NSFW stuff completely banned on Tumblr again.
