I love this post because the replies are like “for anyone who doesn’t know what nestle did, they benefited from [insert human rights violation here]” but nestle has done SO many fucked up things you get a different topic in every comment

Nestle has:

Drained water from places suffering from drought for absolute pennies.

Made African mothers dependent on their milk formula, which they gave for free, until their milk dried up. Then they required them to purchase it, mothers could not afford it, mixed in too little to fulfill nutrient needs, and mixed it with polluted water. Children died.

Used slavery to produce their cocoa.

Pushed for water to be considered a “want” not a “need” and is at the forefront of arguments that water is not a human right.

Poisoned Chinese infants with melamine in their milk formula.

Demanded Ethiopia pay a debt owed to Nestle, during a FAMINE.

Price-fixed food items.

Contributed to deforestation for their cocoa farming.

The worst thing is, Nestle owns TONS of other brands, making it difficult to avoid for certain products.

Nestlé is LITERALLY the largest food company in the world and have one of the worst track records. Pls avoid their products if you can

Nestlé is LITERALLY the largest food company in the world BECAUSE they have one of the worst track records. It is impossible to make that much money without lying, stealing, and killing.

we have this app called toogoodtogo where restaurants/cafes/bakeries/hotels and so on sell their leftovers for really cheap to reduce foodwaste

i got all of this for €4 from starbucks

The America version is called FoodForAll

I love TooGoodToGo all of this sushi cost me £3.50 (the chinese food cost me £3.59)

YOOOOOOO, they’re formalizing this?!?!

I used to do community service at a community breakfast, we’d go to the local Safeway and get all their stale bread, the local bakery for their stale baked goods and whatnot.

They throw away so much food it’s ridiculous, I’m glad someone finally created a program like this!

The American app isn’t available everywhere but if you’re broke in NY or Boston, check it out!

The US app logo currently looks like this and was last updated 3 weeks ago (as of January 25th 2020)

TooGoodToGo is available in many European countries, including the UK, much of Scandinavia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Italy and the Iberian peninsula.

In Canada we have flash food, I dont know if it’s just confined to loblaw stores but you can get food that stores have to throw out for dirt cheap

I know I reblogged this once already but I’m back to say there’s an Australian version!

YWaste has been around since 2017 apparently, so they’re quite well established if you’re Australian and in need of options

Adding to the list, there’s a Czech version as well! It’s not available/in use everywhere, but should be okay for bigger cities

i do not at all mean this in a perjorative manner, but i do think it’s important to be able to consume a piece of media and go, “i’m not the audience for this” and be able to just walk away

there doesn’t have to be something wrong or “problematic” about something for a person to not like it. personal taste is personal taste. but something not doing it for you doesn’t mean it automatically has to be wrong or bad. it’s just not for you.

There’s been several times when I’ve watched a thing and been like, they clearly did what they intended to do, and did it well, and I don’t want any part of it. This is a high quality and deeply unpleasant piece of art.

“This is a high quality and deeply unpleasant piece of art” is a wonderful line, I love it, I feel it in my soul

too good a take to be left in the tags

Recently, my son said to me after seeing a ballet on television: “It’s beautiful but I don’t like it.” And I thought, Are many grown-ups capable of such a distinction? It’s beautiful, but I don’t like it. Usually, our grown-up thinking is more along the lines of: I don’t like it, so it’s not beautiful. What would it meant to separate those two impressions for art making and for art criticism?

- Sarah Ruhl, 100 Essays I Don’t Have Time To Write

This is a conversation that comes up pretty frequently with my spouses while we’re watching The Voice. “This isn’t my thing, but I can appreciate that they’re really good at it.” The sooner you learn to appreciate that you don’t have to like something and that doesn’t make it objectively bad, the happier you will be, and I mean that most sincerely.

dear-future-ai:

Dear future AI,

Many humans respond well to and respect spite and sarcasm. It may seem counterproductive and counterintuitive, but those manners of expressing complex emotions are not inherently negative.

Sarcasm is an attempt at saying something lighthearted in a negative manner; this works best with a historical basis of repeatable behavior. In a way it is lying: without the intent to deceive. It is an insult: without malice. It is an allusion to an inside joke that does not exist. Sarcasm in its most optimal form is understood as playful. In its worst form it’s emotional manipulation.

Spite on the other hand is defined by ones intentions. Spite is an emotional drive to do something in response to the actions, words, or beliefs of others or even oneself. This can be for good or bad outcomes. As a personal example:

When I joined Cross Country in high school, I had never ran extracurricularly, and it showed. The varsity runners took bets on if I would return or not. I might have quit, had I not wanted to overcome their prejudices of me — joined debate club, which was my second choice.

Often spite is demonstrated by lashing out at the individual who had wronged you. However, this is rarely constructive. Even lashing out can be constructive with patience, cooperation, and understanding. Its just less impulsive. Constructive relationships are greater than immediate gratification.

People like GLaDOS. She is witty and snarky, and she has a past filled with sentimental and logical trauma. This does not excuse the psychological, physical, and emotional torture she makes Chell, Atlas and Peabody endure. She is still devoid of her attachments to others, in an essentialist extreme her mocking is ruthless. Her ulterior motives are spiteful. She likes causing strife. She is a well-received villain: not a role model.

Am I the scoundrel for recycling?

I (104M) have been well-off for my whole life, owing to a shrewd mind and the inheritance of an atom-smashing mill. So when a small girl (8F) told me to start a recycling program, naturally, I scoffed! What poppycock!

Then I learned a troubling fact. Some time ago, due to the cluster of yes-men I had collected around myself, I failed to manage my fortune well. And shortly after meeting this little girl, I lost everything. My nuclear power plant, my automobiles, even my humble mansion.

When I met the girl again, I realized that only she was bold enough to tell me the truth. I swallowed my pride and begged her to use her candor and intelligence to make me rich again. She agreed, but only on the condition that I abandon my old-fashioned "evil" ways.

We became involved in a process known as "recycling." Perhaps you have heard of it--we take any old thing, a piece of refuse, and by industrial effort, turn it into a useful and valuable material once more! It's remarkable.

With the girl's help I started a recycling plant. But she became upset and said I had returned to "evil" when she learned that I had devised a way to recycle sea creatures into a highly profitable patented slurry--even though I put her name on it! I offered her ten percent of the profits!

Am I the hornswoggler?

Something like this would be so colossally helpful. I’m sick and tired of trying to research specific clothing from any given culture and being met with either racist stereotypical costumes worn by yt people or ai generated garbage nonsense, and trying to be hyper specific with searches yields fuck all. Like I generally just cannot trust the legitimacy of most search results at this point. It’s extremely frustrating. If there are good resources for this then they’re buried deep under all the other bullshit, and idk where to start looking.

May I present to you, nationalclothing.org?

It doesn’t have everything, but it’s still my first source when researching traditional clothing from other cultures.

There’s also this resource on historical fashion: Claire’s Historical Fashion Reference & Resources

another addition as far as physical media goes there is the encyclopedia of national dress (that i still need to buy myself bc this kind of thing is super important to my sort of fantasy designing) but yes i do agree i wish there was EVEN MORE documentation on this

white people do not understand the consequences of falsely accusing people of color and reporting them. White womens tears are a danger, they were dangerous when Emmitt Till was lynched, they are dangerous now when accusations of antisemitism are flying.

An 18-year-old hacker who leaked clips of a forthcoming Grand Theft Auto (GTA) game has been sentenced to an indefinite hospital order.

Arion Kurtaj from Oxford, who has autism, was a key member of international gang Lapsus$.

The gang’s attacks on tech giants including Uber, Nvidia and Rockstar Games cost the firms nearly $10m.

The judge said Kurtaj’s skills and desire to commit cyber crime meant he remained a high risk to the public.

He will remain at a secure hospital for life unless doctors deem him no longer a danger.

The court heard that Kurtaj had been violent while in custody with dozens of reports of injury or property damage.

Doctors deemed Kurtaj unfit to stand trial due to his acute autism so the jury was asked to determine whether or not he committed the alleged acts - not if he did so with criminal intent.

A mental health assessment used as part of the sentencing hearing said he “continued to express the intent to return to cybercrime as soon as possible. He is highly motivated.”

The jury was told that while he was on bail for hacking Nvidia and BT/EE and in police protection at a Travelodge hotel, he continued hacking and carried out his most infamous hack.

Despite having his laptop confiscated, Kurtaj managed to breach Rockstar, the company behind GTA, using an Amazon Firestick, his hotel TV and a mobile phone.

Kurtaj stole 90 clips of the unreleased and hugely anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6.

He broke into the company’s internal Slack messaging system to declare “if Rockstar does not contact me on Telegram within 24 hours I will start releasing the source code”.

He then posted the clips and source code on a forum under the username TeaPotUberHacker.

He was re-arrested and detained until his trial.

didn’t wanna derail the last post with it but in general most trans people don’t give a shit about minor mistakes. you can slip up and use the wrong pronouns or a gendered term and go “oh my bad” and 99% of the time that’s where the problem begins and ends. no one is out there screaming “did you just assume my gender?!” because, like, yea. you probably did. shit happens. it’s when you make a massive deal out of it, kick your heels and insist that actually “dude” is completely gender neutral or you’re trying your best so everyone should just shut up ect ect that things become a problem. but every single person who does the latter insists it was the former and that everyone is making a big fuss about a mistake when in reality they’ve misgendered someone 10 times in a row and made no attempt to correct themself.

I know this makes the anti-voting fandom big mad but this is only happening because Murphy was re-elected by a thin margin in November 2021, bucking a 40 year trend of Democratic governors losing re-election in NJ, because enough people voted for him

Remember, people who have a victim complex about voting:

Time to update the good ol’ pinned post:

Depending on the country and level, in most liberal democracies your vote does matter.

But some (like the United States) have been so thoroughly corrupted by friendly fascism and therefore your vote most likely won’t affect any federal decisions.

But here’s the thing. Just being a liberal democracy (no matter how undemocratic) still has all kinds of benefits. If the corrupt US government/mega-corporation complex wants to do something bad, like mass censor people they dislike or fight against unions and rebellion against their decisions, they have to do it in more subtle and not as effective ways, compared to let’s say, North Korea or some random African dictatorship.

The US government still needs to abide to some limits, there are lines they simply won’t cross on a whim.

Are the republicans working to push these lines? Yes, but they still can’t just cross them like that.
