so like. snakes don’t actually have long tails- their tails are infact pretty short- and basically all of their length comes from just having a very long torso.
apparently male spiders in many species have evolved a behavior to catapult away from females after sex to avoid getting eaten but then many of these spiders will go back to the same females as before and attempt to have sex with them again 😭
spiders are incredible it’s baffling to me that people hate them. like are you hearing this.
There’s also a group of predatory flies that produce silk and they do the “gift” thing but some males will just wrap up a stick or leaf in so much silk that he’s already gone by the time the female is done unwrapping it
okay so i guess this is kind of something everyone knows but it seems super disingenuous when people frame israeli displacement of palestinians as like, a sin of the past. like, there is *active displacement* in the west bank, and has been for decades! the israeli govt is still doing it!
“trans men don’t experience misogyny because they’re men thus cannot experience women’s oppression”
I hate to tell you this but even cis men experience misogyny if they step a toe over the line of what our incredibly sexist society sees as “proper” for a man. You really don’t think that a man with interests or expression the world sees as “female” aren’t treated with violence?
“would you say that of other privileged groups? do you think white people experience racism?”
I mean sometimes they do yeah. I know a white guy with monolid eyes and zero known Asian ancestors and he absolutely experiences anti-Asian racism on a fairly regular basis because people think he’s mixed Asian/white. I know a woman who was told throughout her life that she was Native as an adoptee with no known history or background who experienced incredibly violent amounts of anti-Native racism until she discovered as an adult through DNA test that she is 100% white. I know white people who tan incredibly dark in the summer comparatively that are constantly accused of being mixed race and experiencing racism due to that, usually anti-Mexican racism perpetrated against white people with Greek or Italian ancestors.
Their ability to make it stop by saying “hey, I’m white actually” only goes as far as the person enacting violence on them is willing to believe them. They still have to live with the trauma and physical scars from the altercations. We live in a racist world and thus there will be violent people who force all others to pass a whiteness test and eliminating or harming the rest.
Got an ask that I just block/deleted but it was basically “so you think cis people experience transphobia!?!?!?!?” and uh
If you think cis butches don’t experience both transphobia and misogyny and homophobia for daring to be women who break gender roles while still holding onto their womanhood you’ve sorely misunderstood just how bad butches have it in this world sorry. If you don’t think cis queens experience transphobia and homophobia and misogyny for daring to be men who break gender roles while being loud and proud about it and still holding onto their manhood then you’ve sorely mistaken just how bad they have it in this world as well.
Not to mention all of the cis men who wear dresses and skirts and makeup and nail polish and heels simply because they like them who experience all of these things. All of the cis straight women who simply just exist but something about them doesn’t pass society’s “woman enough” test, leading to them being caught in bathroom bills and sporting rules and being attacked by people who mistake them for being transgender or gay.
Just like how straight people experience homophobia to such a degree that they literally beat their children out of any potential deviance from rigidly upheld gender roles and let politicians make jokes on national TV about how they’d drown their pre-teen kids if they came out as LGBT. Do you really think a straight kid still figuring themselves out hears that and doesn’t internalize that homophobia? Doesn’t rigidly hold themselves to some impossible standard so that no one could ever possibly think they’re gay? You don’t think straight teenage boys who maybe don’t pass some bully’s straightness test are getting the shit kicked out of them for “being gay” when, surprise, they aren’t? You don’t think all those kids being attacked by their priests and coaches and teachers are being told “this wouldn’t have happened if you weren’t gay” when they’re literally not gay? Do you know how many straight kids had close calls at my school that famously expels all gay kids, because someone made up a believable enough rumor? Do you know how many of them still got their shit kicked in even though administration ultimately decided to let them stay?
All bigotry is violent and all bigotry catches people it doesn’t “intend” to and hurts them as well. It doesn’t matter what someone’s label is, or if they even have one. It matters if the person enacting the violence is doing it because their victim didn’t pass whatever “acceptable enough” test they didn’t know they were being subjected to.
Everyone is at risk. Oppression doesn’t care what your label is. Some people are more visible targets than others, and as a result those people are the more common targets. That doesn’t mean no one else experiences it.
My first post to reach 2k without people clowning in the notes I feel so proud
At 40.5k I regret to inform everyone that there have been so many clowns in the notes, I might as well call it a circus. It was fun while it lasted I guess.
Anyway this is just how hate crimes and systems of oppression works, literally the legal definition of a hate crime deliberately states that it doesn’t matter what the victim’s identity is, it matters what the perpetrator’s reason was, so people who are not [oppressed group] absolutely can be victims of [violence towards oppressed group] and have it be labeled a hate crime. Hope that helps.
honestly kinda unfortunate that the only spooky library aesthetic is the victorian fancy bookshelves dark academia one bcos like. ok here’s some library stories.
while i was at the university the library was undergoing a major refurbishment so for a little while the print journals were being stored temporarily down in the basement.
basically nobody ever consulted the print journals bcos 99% of stuff undergrads would be looking up is online these days so every time i went down there it was dead fucking silent & empty. you had to walk through what felt like several miles of empty basement to reach the collection, which was in a room w a photocopier shoved in the corner and a bunch of these:
u turn the handles to move these around (saves space) and every time you had to go and check the aisles first on the offchance that someone was in there so they wouldn’t get u know. Compacted.
many years ago i did a week’s work experience with the National Library of Scotland. here it is:
but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. it keeps going down the side of the bridge, like so:
i got a tour of the stacks while i was there. it’s floor after floor of this:
the bookshelves are made of metal & i was treated to the ‘fun fact’ that the shelves are, bizarrely, load bearing. for this reason they have to be constantly vigilant about fire hazards because even a relatively small fire could cause a bookcase to buckle from the heat, which in turn could cause the whole building to collapse in on itself like a house of cards.
BRUH a dude I know from work came in for the first time in months and I thought he looked different but couldn’t figure out why?? So I asked if he’d changed his hair and he was like “BITCH I GOT TOP SURGERY”
yo, what's up. i'm gonna try to make this short and sweet. i'm( 20, M ) the chosen one in some prophecy thing, and i'm travelling in a pretty large party with my little sister P,( 16, F ) as well as some friends, family, and a couple of strangers. i'd be all for the chosen hero thing, but there's ONE issue.
the villain in this story is my adoptive dad, M. ( 700+ but like, he died at 37 if that matters? M )
when me and P were like, REALLY little, we got dropped off at M's doorstep, and he's raised us ever since. now, me and P were 100% aware of what he was doing, but it didn't really affect us so we didn't really intervene, cuz we didn't really feel the need to.
one day, me and P were out in one of the many towns scattered across the land, and somehow that managed to be the one our dad was attacking. so some lady hands me some random amulet to keep me safe and asks me to follow M, which i do just to make her feel better.
me and M talk it out, he agrees to leave the town alone for a little bit, and all's well and good, right?
not really. cuz uh, turns out the amulet i was given is possessed by M's sister, E! ( also 700+ ) and she's like, REALLY pissed at my dad and wants me to go through with it.
i've gotten a lot of other opinions on the matter too, with most saying it'd be nice if i at least knocked my dad down a peg or two, but... i don't think i have it in me to do that.
we're a couple weeks into this adventure now and we're nearing M's castle and i'm starting to get cold feet. i know that i'm gonna have to fight him because everyone's counting on me and all, but... i'm not sure i can. but i can't just chicken out right now, since i'm the chosen one and all, so... i dunno, WIBTA for not following through with my destiny??? i really don't wanna hurt my dad, but like... everyone else is counting on me.
AITA for not telling my student that he's a clone?
I (53F) am a spacecraft pilot instructor to the son (19M) of two of my very close friends who we'll call S (47M) and C (2032M). However because they're gay and different species and also because C is technically dead (long story, he tried to draft dodge 2k years ago by escaping in the middle of the night but there were vampires running around) they decided to just make a clone of S and raise it as their son. However because we (me, S, C and a few others) were partly responsible for the downfall and ongoing reconstruction of society after a massive revolution we're kind of well known. Because of this the son has been going through a bit of an identity crisis where everyone expects him to be like S but he wants to stand out on his own merits. So a bunch of shit went down and it came out that he's a clone. He's pissed. He feels especially betrayed by me because he suspected the clone thing awhile ago and I told him it wasn't true. I tried to explain that I always wanted him to know the truth but his parents didn't want him to so I was respecting their wishes. Was I an asshole?

should i make a website where the further down links you go the more you get to know about me and the more quizzes you have to solve on me to get to the next part and as it goes it gets more and more un-userfriendly or just make a normal website like a normal person
Also, only tangentially related to Current Events… sometimes it feels like tumblr users are especially hostile to the service they’re voluntarily using- is this something that’s just expected with social media sites, or is there something about the tumblr user base that’s especially vitriolic?
Tumblr has an especially young userbase, and it has definitely reminded me of how cruel kids can be to each other, given me flashbacks to elementary and middle school. I would truly encourage anyone who thinks attacking everyone working on the site or any attempt to make it sustainable to consider the long-term ramifications of that approach.
By the numbers, however, I believe the super-trolls are a very small sub-0.5% percentage of Tumblr’s userbase, which is largely creative, supportive, artistic, and assumes good intent with the changes we make. However they can have an outsized impact, and this is one reason we are maintaining and even increasing our investment in Trust & Safety, which is the team that counters hate speech, bots, spam, trolling, attacks, and other anti-social behavior on Tumblr. Those bad actors will lose their accounts, and we will improve keeping them from registering new accounts right away and repeating the behavior.
The artistic, supportive part of Tumblr is one of the best places on the Internet. I’ve experienced moments of beauty and connection here that I haven’t anywhere else, and it’s why I love Tumblr deeply. It’s why the entire team cares, and we’ll do our best to support and allow that part of Tumblr to not just survive, but thrive.
I’ve bought more art from The Internet™ from Tumblr in the past few years than I have bought art in my entire life. Books, prints, etc <3
you've probably have gotten this question a million times, but -- what about fundraising in the style of ao3 or even wikipedia? for all the thousands of fourteen year olds running around who don't understand how much it costs to run a website, there's another thousand of adults whom would love to keep using this site forever. it may not be a more-profits-every-quarter kind of situation, but then again, one is allowed to dream beyond the current silicon valley web 2.0 profit driven hellscape
That was the idea behind the Tumblr Supporter badge, a way for people who appreciate the site can chip in towards keeping it going. It hasn’t been as successful as we hoped, only about 2,300 subscribers so far (out of 11.5M monthly active users) but over time maybe it could compound to be what drives the site.
