Today in transphobic idiocy…

Avery Jackson did a non-medical transition at the age of four. At the time, they felt more comfortable as a girl. As they grew up and their understanding of gender evolved, they decided nonbinary transgender suited them better.

And now that they are 15, their family is moving out of Missouri because they fear the recent draconian anti-trans laws.

“No longer identifies as a girl” does not mean they identify as a boy. They are still trans. They knew from the age of 4 that being a boy was not right for them.

I don’t think they changed their mind. I think they just found a better understanding of who they were.

These bigots know nothing about trans people yet think they are qualified to criticize them.

Transgender Day of Visibility.

As someone whose pronouns change a lot (im genderfluid) and a friend of several trans people, yeah. These all help.

deebrisbyfish:

Some folks would prefer that I keep politics OUT of my comic strip, but… uh… it’s a comic about my life as a transgender woman, and it’s KINDA hard to not be a smidge political when one party keeps pushing and passing laws that make it a crime for me to exist.

So, sorry if you feel this is unfair, but it feels pretty frickin’ unfair to be labeled a literal criminal for existing.

drill-teeth-art:

Wow! Here’s something incredibly personal.

This is Good Bi Gender. A comic I made to express some feelings I have about my gender. I don’t really have that much else to say about it. Here it is.

[Image Description: A digital comic made with sharp, angular abstract lines and only the colors white, blue, pink, and black. The featured character is all white, except for facial features and hair colors, which changes from panel to panel. The comic reads: Cover Panel: The text “Good Bi Gender”, the words colored with the trans flag. It shows a glitchy person’s face, half pink and half blue. Panel 1: White text reads: “Hello. My name is apparently irrelevant. And my pronouns are he/him and she/her. But you can’t call me she/her. And here’s why.” Someone with a half-pink and half-blue shirt looks to the side. One eye is covered with hair, and the other eye is pink while the iris is blue.

Panel 2: The character sits happily, imagining facial hair and a masculine voice. “I don’t want top surgery. I love my chest. And I dream about being on testosterone someday soon.” The character looks at a phone, frowning. The phone shows the male symbol with an “X” through it. Text next to it reads: “People don’t seem to think that the features I dream of are very pretty though… Or they think even worse of them than that…”

Panel 3: The character’s features are all pink, and sits in a blank frame. The character reaches over to a blue frame, frowning. “I don’t like the animosity. I really despise it.” A photo of the character shows an all-blue frame and blue hair, with pink outlines and facial features. “To be a boy… I aspire to be one. I aspire to be masculine in all its handsomeness. All its prettiness.” Panel 4: The character sits in an all blue panel, but reaches back out to the pink panel. “And I’m still a girl too. I was so excited to have both. To love both. To have handsome femininity. Beautiful masculinity.” The frames break and connect, and pink and blue swirl together. The character smiles in between the frames, with one pink eye and one blue eye. “So excited. And yet I get asked…”

Panel 5: Two hands hold out two different pills to the character, one blue and one pink. They ask “Male? or Female?” using the male and female symbols. The character, facial features an array of pink and blue, looks between the two hands, distressed. “It’s both! I’m both! They’re not opposites. Not narrow boxes. I say I’m both despite the insistence that I can’t be. And I know what I look like. I know I look like a girl to most. I know that if I say people can call me she, that’s all I will get from most. Because it’s “easier”. It “makes more sense”. To have my masculinity, I am often forced to be unflinching in it and it alone. To never use she. Because if I don’t, I will never get to have he.” [The words “she” and “he” are italicized.] Panel 6: Text reads: “I’m still very happy to be so comfortable in my identity. To know, despite all that, that I am indeed a boy and a girl and both. But you know. Telling people to only use he/him for me. Guarding my masculinity all just to have it. All at the expense of the part of me who is happily and unashamedly a girl.” The character cries from one pink eye, the other hidden. The character holds a pink girl in a sea of blue, the girl crying out. In the midst of the blue, text reads: “Well, it fucking breaks her heart.” End ID]

Edit: @starberry-skies wrote an ID for the comic, so I added it to the og post with its permission!

thanks that was really helpful

Or when you look for something, knowing very well it’s an unpopular or haphazard way of doing stuff, but you KNOW it’s the way you need to do something and every single result is basically “you fucking moron, why are you trying to do it this way. Do this other thing you’re completely incapable of doing, or try this other way you’ve already tried sixteen times.”

:

:

is the tgirl wearing a collar doing it because she has a fetish, or just because it’s a cute accessory? is the gay man in leather and a pup mask actually being “indecent” or is he just dressed up like a dog because it’s fun? are drag queens doing it because crossdressing is sexy or because drag is an expression of who they are as a person? does the furry walking around in full suit have a boner under their outfit or do they just like cosplaying as their cute cartoon squirrel oc?

you will never know. you can never tell. sometimes even the people doing these things won’t have an answer. is it a sex thing? is it kink? who fucking knows! there is no line! public expressions of sexuality aren’t immoral to begin with, but if you make any attempt to suppress them, you have to decide what is and isn’t allowed, and you are going to get it wrong. there is no way to untangle kink from personality and hobbies and interests. kink does not even necessarily involve sex. sometimes it’s just self-expression and vulnerability and sharing a particular dynamic with another person. sounds a lot like (checks notes) literally every other human experience that exists.

i’ll say it again: the person wearing a leash in your vicinity is not sexually assaulting you. they’re just wearing a leash.

for anyone concerned about children seeing these people in public and asking questions, here’s a script to help:

~

kid: hey that man is walking another man on a leash what’s up with that?

adult: i don’t know, but some people like to play pretend. maybe they’re pretending to be a dog and its person for fun.

kid: 👍 cool, this was an entirely non-traumatic experience and i didn’t even have to hear anything about sex

adult: 👍 cool, i told the truth in an age appropriate way that doesn’t result in any confrontation or distress to my family or to the strangers harmlessly going about their day

see!!! no harm done!!! wow it’s that easy!

What type of Villain are you?

Pure Evil

You are unapologetically evil, you are likely just here for the drama and the theater of it all. You are selfish and cruel because you want to be, not because you had no other choice, but because you revel in the opportunity to do what is wrong. That’s not to say you will commit every unspeakable act, perhaps you have standards and your own moral code, but by no means are you the good guy in your own mind. Those who have wronged you, no matter how trivial or petty the slight against you, will be treated without mercy and you will be cackling the entire time without a hint of remorse. You enjoy the most painful and twisted approach to getting your revenge. Above all else, you like to cause problems on purpose.

I'm afraid I have to insist on this because it may be the only way to get my treatment.

If we can agree that making fun of one person’s appearance affects everyone with those traits, we can agree that using ableist remarks to make fun of people affects all disabled people. 👍🏻

For example:

“When I make fun of unemployed people I’m not talking about you!!” Yeah. You are.

It’s no different than, say, making fun of someone for their receding hairline right in front of your balding friend.

You’re being a dick.

I keep seeing people use the term “unemployeds.” Describing us all as one class of people. A class of people who are inherently “less mature” than others. I think you can work out for yourself why that’s bad.

How are we calling ourselves leftists while parroting capitalist, classist, ableist, christofascist rhetoric about how “work ethic” is tied to someone’s inherent worth?

I can’t wrap my mind around it.

Interesting how “of course no one on this site fucks” and “virgin” have now also become popular insults on tumblr.

Ableism and aphobia aside – how fucking old are we? You’re telling me you’re old enough and able enough to have a job and have sex, but you’re using insults from 19 year old reddit frat boys from the 2000s?

Yeah, I don’t think being an “unemployed virgin” is what makes you “immature.”

Being an adult and believing that you’re inherently better than entire groups of people based off of morally-neutral differences is the real loser behavior.

Another common insult I see people use is “you clearly don’t leave the house.”

Do I really need to sit and explain to the fucking LEFTISTS that say this shit how that’s both ableist and classist?

You know that there are many reasons that people can’t leave their homes as often as they’d like to, be it disability, lack of transportation, being stuck in an abusive household, etc, and yet….you’re still gonna use that as an insult?

How can you say you support disabled & other marginalized people whenever you continue to use us as scapegoats for your insults?

“You clearly don’t leave the house, unemployed virgin.”

You clearly can’t use your brain for think for a few seconds to come up with a new insult that you haven’t used since high school.

I have a strong feeling that the reason that this post isn’t gaining much traction is because

1. It’s uncomfortable to confront yourself when it comes to biases. It leads to a lot of guilt knowing that your words and actions have consequences that you don’t have to personally experience.

2. Because they would feel like a hypocrite for saying one of these things in the past, and they don’t want to be called out for being “two-faced.”

3. They’re too worried about calling out their mutuals/followers.

or, 4: They think I’m being “too sensitive” and “taking jokes way too seriously.”

It’s okay to learn and grow. It’s what you SHOULD do.

If they were just harmless jokes, then they wouldn’t affect the way people behave towards us in real life.

You are PURPOSEFULLY trying to put a bad name onto people who are unemployed, disabled, or asexual by using us as examples of who the “freaks” are.

You KNOW that insults based off of homophobia, transphobia, racism, antisemitism, fatphobia, sexism, etc reflect on how people think about those groups and how they treat them in real life.

Like how homphobes will call anyone and anything they don’t like as “gay” or “girly” as an insult - they are insisting that being gay or girly is wrong and disgusting.

Your insults about being unemployed, being a virgin, or not leaving the house are no different.

You are claiming that the people who are like that are “bad” and “weird” when you make those “jokes.”

PLEASE LISTEN TO US.

We should all seek justice, justice for all.

#RemoveTheWall

I love this, have never seen it with four panels…

It is worth noting that not all problems are 100% socially constructed, and therefore this conception of justice is not always an option.

For example, you can strive to reduce disability stigma, and you can give the disabled better healthcare, but people with incurable denegenerative diseases who experience chronic pain and deteriorating health are still going to experience unfair suffering, and the only way to truly fully “remove the cause of the inequality” is to literally invent a miracle cure.

I’m reminded of that post talking about how X-Men is the perfect metaphor for leftist infighting, like that scene from the movie (was it X2? X3?) where Storm says “we don’t need a cure; there’s nothing wrong with us” to Rogue, the girl who literally can’t touch people without killing them.

Which is to say,

I’m concerned people will look at this graphic and leave with the takeaway that pursuing equity is a waste of time, and the only thing that really matters is eradicating the root cause.

Because as important as it is to, for example, fund scientific research to find a cure chronic fatigue syndrome, it is just as important, perhaps more important, to make sure that, until such time as we are able to discover that cure, we ensure people with chronic fatigue syndrome are getting as much support as it is possible to give them now.

My point is, it’s not a matter of equity vs. justice. Pursuing justice is not better and more ethical than pursuing equity.

We need to work towards solving the root problem, but that can take a really long time, time people who are suffering don’t necessarily have, so we also need to improve quality of life for people who can’t afford to wait that long.

We need equity AND justice. We need to strive for BOTH.

This painting was left intentionally incomplete. Haring began it when he was dying due to complications from AIDS, and knew he didn’t have much time left. The piece represents the incomplete lives of him and many others, lost to AIDS during the crisis.

The AIDS memorial quilt is shown, with thousands of fabric panels extending over the ground and into the distance. There are houses and a tower in the distance, as well.ALT

“AIDS Memorial Quilt” — Multiple

This quilt is over 50 tons heavy, and one of, if not the, largest pieces of community folk art. Many people who died of AIDS did not receive funerals, due to social stigma and many funeral homes refusing to handle the deceased’s remains, so this was one of the only ways their lives could be celebrated. Each panel was created in recognition of someone who died due to AIDS, typically by that person’s loved ones.

A pile of colorful pieces of wrapped candy, in a corner of a room, with beige wallpaper and flooring.ALT

“Untitled” (Portrait of Ross in L.A.) — Felix Gonzalez-Torres

This pile of candy weighs the same amount as an average adult man. Visitors are encouraged to take some of the candy. As they do so, the pile of candy weighs less and less. This is a commentary on how AIDS deteriorates the body of those who have it. Gonzalez-Torres’ partner, Ross Laycock, had died due to AIDS-related complications the same year.

The SF Gay Men’s Chorus

This photo was taken in 1993. The men in white are the surviving original members. Every man in black is standing in for an original member who lost their lives to AIDS.

An older electric fan, held up off the ground by and encased in Plexiglass. There are holes cut in the glass where the fan is running.ALT

“Electric Fan (Feel it Motherfuckers); Only Unclaimed Item from the Stephen Earabino Estate, 1997” — John Boskovich

After the death of his lover, Stephen Earabino, from AIDS, Boskovich discovered that his family had completely cleared his room, including Boskovich’s own possessions, save for this fan. An entire person, existence and relationship had been erased, just like so many lives during the AIDS crisis. Boskovich encased the fan in Plexiglass, but added cutouts so that its air may be felt by the viewer, almost like an exhalation. In a sense, restoring Earabino’s breath.

A movie promotional image. It is a saturated blue color. In large letters, in the middle, reads, "Blue", in all caps. In smaller letters, at the bottom, reads, "A film by Derek Jarman", in all caps. There are multiple lines of other, smaller text, but they are illegible.ALT

“Blue” — Derek Jarman

This was Jarman’s final feature film, released four months before his death from AIDS-related complications. These complications had left him visually impaired, able to only see in shades of blue. This film consists of a single shot of a saturated blue color, as the soundtrack to the film described Jarman’s life through narration, intercut with the adventures of Blue, a humanization of the color blue. The film’s final moments consist of a set of repeated names: “John. Daniel. Howard. Graham. Terry. Paul". These are the names of former lovers and friends of Jarman who had died due to AIDS.

Two completely alike, white analog clocks, against a light wall. The two thickest hands of the clock are black, and the thinnest hand for both is red. The numbers are black. Their faces read the same time.ALT

“Untitled” (Perfect Lovers) — Felix Gonzalez-Torres

Created by the same man who created the previous untitled piece, this piece was also inspired by his lover’s deterioration and death due to AIDS. This piece consists of two perfectly alike clocks. Over the course of time, one of the clocks will fall out of sync with the other.

In a letter written to his lover about the piece, before his lover’s passing, Gonzalez-Tourres wrote, “Don’t be afraid of the clocks, they are our time, the time has been so generous to us. We imprinted time with the sweet taste of victory. We conquered fate by meeting at a certain time in a certain space. We are a product of the time, therefore we give back credit were it is due: time. We are synchronized, now forever. I love you.”

Hey y'all, I’d appreciate anyone from the UK signing this petition to allow trans/nonbinary kids to stay closeted from their parents if they’re out at school. It’s obviously very important that children be able to keep potentially dangerous information about their identity away from their parents, and explore it safely in a school environment.

If it reaches 10k votes the government must respond, and 100k means they need to debate it, but any votes are good for raising awareness and profile.

If you’re not from the UK please share this so others see it

remember: the ‘holy’ white doves are just white rock doves, aka the common pigeon!

Doves are just pigeons with white privilege

Also can we talk about how STUNNING their irredentist feathers are?

This post made me finally look up whether Australian crested pigeons are also doves, and I didn’t quite understand the wiki page but I think the answer is ‘yes’.

You guys are gonna go ham when you hear about fruit doves

But get a load of these fat bois. The kererū, or New Zealand wood pigeon.

with regards to what is a dove and what is a pigeon- so pigeons & doves make up the family of birds called the columbidae, and there’s a few hundred of them- even the famously extinct dodo bird is a member of the family!

the animal that usually comes to mind when you think “pigeon” is, as noted above, the common rock dove- specifically, the feral populations of domesticated rock doves that are found in cities worldwide. these are not truly wild animals- they’re the descendants of domestic pigeons, which is why you’ll find lots of color and pattern variation looking at city pigeons, like you might looking at a feral cat colony. the undomesticated rock dove lives in northern africa and southwestern eurasia natively, it was the species from which our domestic pigeons were derived- much like red jungle fowl to chickens, and wolves to dogs.

a flock of feral pigeons feeding on a brick sidewalk. the pigeons are various shades of grey and black, and have different patterns.
a common rock dove standing on a rock. it is light grey with purple-green iridescence on its neck, and two black wingbars.

a flock of feral pigeons on the left, and an undomesticated rock dove on the right. note the variation in colors and patterns on the feral flock- some are lighter, darker, have checkered sides, and so on. the rock dove is a more solid light grey with two distinct black wing bars, but feral pigeons can look just like this, too. these all represent only the single species we tend to be most familiar with, only one of the hundreds of species of pigeons/doves out there (such as the various sorts of fruit doves above)!

but the actual difference between what species are called pigeons and what are called doves: well, there really isn’t. generally folks tend to call the larger ones pigeons and smaller ones doves, but this is not at all consistent and there are no specific pigeon or dove clades (evolutionary groupings) within the family. ergo, functionally speaking, ‘pigeon’ and ‘dove’ are pretty much interchangeable.

Density of penguin feathers to protect from the cold.

Emperor penguins reputedly have the highest feather density of any bird, with around 100 feathers per square inch of skin (15 per square centimeter).

It is morally correct to be horny on main.

If we really want to fight against this puritanical culture that seems to be hell-bent on running sex workers off the internet and banning pornography wherever they can find it, you have a moral duty to post hole on main. Doesn’t have to be your own hole but you got to post it.

Sometimes self-care is, actually, NOT getting onto the computer and little treats and watching youtube videos. Sometimes those things are self-care, but sometimes they’re also avoidant behaviors.

Sometimes self care is waking up and just. Fucking getting in the car. And driving to the bank. And the store. And buying the cat litter. And changing the cat boxes you’ve been avoiding because your brains been stuck in a hole. And picking up the trash you’ve been piling up. And getting a load into the wash. And mowing the lawn before the village council sends you a formal complaint and potential-fines warning.

Like its hard and annoying to do because it sucks. It sucks so much. But if I don’t start working on this pile of bullshit I’ve let build up because it stinks and i was stuck in deer-in-headlights mode, I risk letting it turn into fuckery. I do not have the patience for fuckery that I once - foolishly! - thought I had.

This mentality helped me so much. Framing my “chores” and mundane tasks as self care and something I can do for myself, really helped me. On a good day I feel like I can genuinely enjoy basic to-dos because I get something nice for myself afterwards, even if that nice thing is just a better living environment. And sometimes it’s still too hard, and that’s okay too.

quick protip: if someone is crying or freaking out over something minor, eg wifi not connecting, can’t find their hat, people talking too loud, do NOT tell them how small or petty the problem is to make it better. they know. they would probably love to calm down. you are doing the furthest possible thing from helping. people don’t have to earn expressions of feelings.

I’m just gonna put it out there that if someone’s freaking about something small, they’re really freaking out about something big that they’re trying to deal with, or something long term that’s been building up, and that little thing is the straw that broke the camel’s back.

I don’t know, try and give people the benefit of the doubt. Don’t be the next straw on their broken back.

Needed this today.

People don’t actually go from 0 to 60. If you think they did, you have failed to notice how long they’ve been at 59.
