If you still call tumblr the hellsite you haven’t seen twitter’s recent discourse over whether short women can be loved for anything other than a fetish
a significant percent of bad discourse is just:
Treating fictional characters as if they are real living human people
Treating real people as if they are characters in a story
so as a 4'11" 30-year-old woman, am I just supposed to live a celibate life devoid of romance because it’s inherently ~problematic~ to be attracted to me?
ye gods. these assholes either didn’t think about the implications of their beliefs on real, actual short people, or didn’t care
I think I’m literally never gonna be sick of this masterpiece. I think watching it on a loop for eight hours could fix me. Dancing’s what clears my soul. Dancing’s what makes me whole.
i’m not very excited for the prospect of video game movies replacing superhero movies in our current culturally zeitgeist, not just because the possible discourse surrounding it would/will be extremely obnoxious, but because with how much work is put into modern video game’s visual and cinematography, a live action adaption of kindgom hearts for instance seems extremely redundant when we already have “KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5 REMIX All Cutscenes (Game Movie) 1080p HD” right there.
it’s part of the larger trend where people don’t see adaptions of comic books, or video games or animation as new takes on the same stories, just using the different techniques of live action movies, but rather “fixing stories that were held back by their "inferior medium” as if video games by themselves aren’t a perfectly fine and sometimes better way of telling a story compared to a 1 and a half hour movie.
like genuinely i don’t think there’d be so much disdain against live action adaptions of animated disney movies, if they were more like different takes on the same story rather than ‘we took the story you loved but IMPROVED IT by not making it a cartoon anymore! cause that’s clearly what was holding it back from being real art, i guess"
Despite the fact that I am not deaf, mute, or blind myself, one of the most common questions I receive is how to portray characters with these disabilities in fiction.
As such, I’ve compiled the resources I’ve accumulated (from real life deaf, mute, or blind people) into a handy masterlist.
The original post only has US helplines. I’ve added UK helplines underneath. It would be great if people could add numbers from everywhere in the world.
also if you wanna combat the “women in the past only crossdressed because of misogyny!” you have GOTTA read chapter 11 in Transgender Warriors where leslie feinberg does such a good job constructing an argument against this kind of radfem reductionism
“"No wonder you’ve passed as a man! This is such an anti-woman society,” a lesbian friend told me. To her, females passing as males are simply trying to escape women’s oppression- period. She believes that once true equality is achieved in society, humankind will be genderless. I don’t have a crystal ball, so I can’t predict human behavior in the distant future. But I know what she’s thinking- if we can build a more just society, people like me will cease to exist. She assumes that I am simply a product of oppression. Gee, thanks so much.“
"First, let’s talk about who can pass as another sex. My same friend reminds me periodically that she too might have passed as a men a century ago to escape women’s oppression. She stares right past my gender expression as she speaks. […] I don’t want to burst her bubble. Everyone deserves untrammeled dreams. But I want to tell her that, in the dead of winter, if she was bundled up against the cold, with a hood or hat covering her head, some man in a deli might call her "sir.” But could she pass as male on a board ship, sleeping with and sharing common facilities with her fellow sailors for decades and not be discovered? Of course, hundreds of thousands of women have dreamed of escaping the economic and social inequities of their lives, but how many could live as a man for a decade or a lifetime? While a woman could throw on men’s clothing and pass as a man for safety on dark roadways, could she pass as a man at an inn where men slept together in the same beds? Could she maintain her identity in daylight? Pass the scrutiny of co-workers? Would she really feel safer and more free? How could females have lived and been accepted as men without hormones or surgery? They must have been masculine; they must have been trans-gendered. If they were not, how could they pass? We don’t know how each of the thousands who passed from female to male over the centuries would define themselves today- whether as transgender or transsexual or drag or any other modern definition. The point is that their gender expression allowed them to transition. I just don’t believe that the debate about why “women pass as men” can be understood only in the light of women’s, or of lesbian and gay, oppression. It has to be viewed in the context of trans history in order to make sense.“
"Look at George Sand, the nineteenth-century novelist. It’s true that she could not have published without a male nom de plume at that time. But if that’s all there was to her identity, why did she wear men’s clothing? Why was she attacked for masculine behavior? And if it was just a question of lesbian oppression, what was she doing in bed with Chopin? If passing from female to male is simply motivated by the need to escape lesbian oppression, then why have females who have passed as males chosen other men as lovers?”
“Finally, if so many females have passed as men only to escape women’s oppression, then why have so many males passed as women? While it is biologically easier for a female to pass as a young boy than for a male to pass as a woman, there are many, many examples in the modern era of those who passed from male to female.”
“We have not always been forced to pass, to go underground, in order to work and live. We have a right to live openly and proudly. When we are denied those rights, we are the ones who suffer that oppression. But when our lives are suppressed, everyone is denied an understanding of the rich diversity of sex and gender expression and experience that exist in human society. I have lived as a man because I could not survive openly as a transgendered person. Yes, I am oppressed in this society, but I am not merely product of oppression. That is a phrase that renders all our trans identities meaningless. Passing means having to hide your identity in fear, in order to live. Being forced to pass is a recent historical development. It is passing that is a product of oppression.”

my issue with “ipad kids” discourse is not that i don’t think that giving your 11 month year old an ipad and than leaving them alone for 11 hours ISN"T possibly unhealthy, even considering the fact that while previous forms of entertainment like books, radio, or tv were also criticized for “rotting children’s brains” they’re at least like. a bare minimum of quality in terms of what’s being consumed. a 6 year old watching nothing but nickelodeon or cartoon network is still probably getting more out of it than a 6 year watching ai generated elsa spiderman slime videos. so like yeah spend more time with your kids or at least show them like. pbs shows instead of youtube kids.
my actual issue with the discourse is how it’s framed through this really obnoxious “generational war lense” specially how like self proclaimed “gen z” zoomers are talking about millennials in the exact same way boomers were talking about “iphone’s turning millennials into brain dead zombies” 10 years ago that everyone thought was lame and outdated until 20 year old tiktok influencers started saying it so it’s woke or and based? like i’m not even saying zoomers are wrong, but are we also gonna agree that boomers were right all along, or was the only thing people took away from dumbass generational divides was “old people are lame and young people are inherently correct and progressive” and not “generations were made up by marketers to sell us shit and arent’ a good way of measuring progressiveness or anything really”
hearing a song you really like on the radio just hits different than streaming it. same with catching a movie you really like on cable just as it’s starting. streaming services will never be able to capture this very specific kind of simple joy
also greg is the most bisexual-coded cartoon dad ever
so greg you’re telling me your conservative family doesnt approve of your musical awakening coming from a naked gay icon in gnc/drag makeup and they want to send you to the military but you ran away and changed your name and ended up with a musical aesthetic best described as indie glam rock dad with a non-binary space alien gf instead? das crazy, tell me more about how straight you are
I’m not saying Canadian truth-in-advertising laws are perfect, but I just got a promotional email with five separate footnoted disclaimers in the space of as many sentences, and it’s kind of fun to see exactly how they plan to screw you over clearly outlined in bulleted list format.
I still get business-to-business emails for a certain industry, and I often get both the American-directed and Canadian-directed emails. Now, truth in advertising doesn’t exactly apply to B2B advertising, but it did change what precedents were set with relation to fraud.
And now and again, you do get two wildly different emails, mostly of the variety where some claims just … don’t appear in the Canadian version of the email. Rows missing off comparison tables and the like. My holy grail, should I ever receive it, will be when the Canadian version simply makes no claims whatsoever.
I think my favourite example that I’ve encountered of promotional claims varying by jurisdiction is a breakfast cereal where the front of the American packaging says it contains 22 essential vitamins and minerals, but the front of the Canadian packaging for the exact same cereal with the exact same listed ingredients only says it contains 9 essential vitamins and minerals.
With the way American tradcaths are currently speedrunning schismatism, I’m about 80% convinced we’ll see a non-trivially supported American antipope within my lifetime, and not gonna lie, I’d be fascinated to see how that would go down.
tradcaths: Traditional Catholics; folks who profess to be Roman Catholic, but oppose the reforms introduced by the Catholic Church in tie Second Ecumenical Council of the Vatican in 1962 (colloquially known as Vatican II). Mostly they tend to have a problem with local priests being allowed to administer rites in whatever language is spoken locally rather than only in Latin, though there are other reforms they often object to as well.
The Traditional Catholic movement is closely associated with sedevacantism, the belief that the apostolic succession of the papacy has been interrupted and the Holy See is thus vacant – or, in plain English, the belief that somewhere along the line, one of the popes lost God’s support, and thus, that pope and all of his official successors, including the current pope, have been imposters. Sedevacantists usually identify Pope Pius XII (who died in 1958) as the last real pope, though there’s some disagreement on this point.
(Note that not all tradcaths are sedevacantists, and not all sedevacantists are tradcaths – there’s merely substantial overlap.)
Antipope: Anyone other than the official pope who claims to be the pope. All antipopes are sedevacantists, though their justifications for why they’re the real pope vary; some are self-elected, while others claim to be the legitimate successors of a secret lineage of “true” popes that branched off when the official popes lost their legitimacy. Naturally, no antipope would describe themselves as such – as far as they’re concerned, they’re the real pope, and it’s the guy currently warming the big chair in Rome who’s an antipope!
Historically, antipopes have sometimes been a very big deal; consider, for example, the latter part of the Western Schism, a period of eight years from 1409 to 1417 where there were three competing papal lineages who all denounced each other as antipopes and made a whole thing of it. More recent claimants tend not to get much traction; the latest American antipope, Pope Michael, for example, never had more than a couple dozen verifiable supporters.
Hm. Would sedevacantism qualify as heresy? Just asking for clarification.
Not necessarily. Heresy is about doctrine, and you can disagree about who the current pope is without rejecting any particular point of Catholic doctrine – indeed, sedevacantism is often motivated by the belief that the pope himself is a heretic.
(Note, however, that all forms of schismatism, including sedevacantism, carry a penalty of automatic excommunication from the Catholic Church regardless of whether they’re founded in heresy, specifically to avoid anyone squeaking by on that particular technicality, so in practice the distinction is somewhat academic.)

i feel like i personally struggle with forgiving people who have done bad things because as a pure utilitarian and utility monster, it’s been very easy to be almost perfectly good my entire life and i can’t really put myself into their shoes. luckily my mild discomfort vastly outweighs any problems this attitude causes, so i can continue dismissing anyone who isn’t perfectly good (ie, who has not dedicated their life to the overwhelming necessity of my happiness) without feeling the slightest bit bad. this morality shit is easy
there should be just one language but instead of just picking one and erasing all the others like some kind of eugenicist we should just merge every language togetjer so there’s a million words for the same thing and the grammar system is the most fucked up thing you’ve ever seen

Everytime this post comes up, I go “DAMNIT!” but then I end up writing a lot and I get proud of myself so. Keep reblogging this!
my biggest obstacle as a writer is that i desperately want to be a popular and well-known fic author, but my main fic inspiration comes from characters most fans don’t want to read fic for, or ideas that go against popular fanon/characterization and so are doomed from the start. i end up feeling paralyzed and like i can’t write the unpopular ideas I want to write, because i hate knowing i could have done better by writing something with broader appeal. but whenever i try to write solely for numbers i lose motivation while the halfway through the fic. so i end up unable to write anything and feeling miserable because of it.
i want to see my unpopular ideas come to life, but i don’t want to see my fics crash and burn and keep missing the chance to create fic that people really love. so most times, i don’t write anything, but i hate that i’m so hamstrung by my own anxieties. i so desperately wish i could create one of those extremely well-known long fics that most people love and always rec everywhere, but i feel like i’m completely incapable of that. i know i should be writing for myself, but i’m greedy and want results and for people to like my fic, however unlikely that is. wanting to write my ideas but knowing i’ll limit my audience if i do is something that’s constantly on my mind. do you have any advice for me?
My biggest question after reading your ask is simply: why?
You’re very clear about wanting to be a popular writer. You want to write a fic that lots of people talk about, and you want people to know who you are. Have you examined that desire at all?
You say that the things you actually want to write are not the things that will make you a popular author. That means you have a choice:
write things you don’t care about with no guarantee of becoming that Big Name Fan or
write things you love and enjoy spending time writing and know that BNF status will probably never happen.
Writing fanfic is really not a great way to try to become popular. It’s an even worse way to try to become “famous” in any kind of way. So dig into what it is that you hope to get from the “broader audience” that you could appeal to by writing something you don’t really like.
Are you trying to get a feeling of being liked? Respected? Looked up to? Do you want to be someone other fans look to for advice or for setting the tone of the fandom? Do you want love? Power? Some kind of community connection? Recognition of the effort you put into your works?
Some of those things likely will require you to pretend to be someone you’re not. You might even manage to write that one big fic that gets thousands of comments and tons of people talking about it on tumblr (or wherever else you care about, social media-wise).
Others you can probably still get by writing your “unpopular” ideas but seeking out your fellow fans. It will take more legwork to find them and you’ll need to be willing to be the first one to reach out for a conversation, but it can definitely be done.
I’ll leave it up to you to decide what you actually want, anon. But take your time and scrape off the top layer of shiny thoughts about popularity first. Then you’ll be able to see what’s underneath.
if i may…
being a popular and well-known fic author isn’t really like… a thing? in modern day fandom? maybe in some, sure, but your cassandra clares or whoever else just don’t really happen anymore. fandom is much bigger than it used to be, and you’ll always be putting your work onto a pile of existing works, unless it’s a small fandom, in which case you’ll be one of the few posting it but also one of the few even around to read it.
and, look, here’s the thing: your fic will be popular, at best. you, as a person? that still requires some legwork. you cannot just write well and become a household name in the same breath. like even for famous published authors, how many people do you think know who stephen king is as a person? his name is certainly “household”, but he’s also been putting out an obscene amount of work for decades.
now. i’m not actually trying to be disparaging, here. i just wanted to get the ugly bits out of the way first.
i’m sure there’s tons out there with more than mine, but for my fandom i think this is pretty good. now let me tell you how i did this:
i wrote what i wanted to.
this is not a guarantee. it is not a surefire way to become popular. but it is fun, and people will recognize your passion. they’ll enjoy your work more because you’re enjoying it. writing what you want, how you want will always be better for EVERYONE involved, i promise. if you write to meet a quota, to appeal to the common denominator, people can tell. it’s not nearly as fun to read unless you’re really, really good at it, in which case you’d honestly be better off using that talent on things you like anyway!
and my fic has not made me popular. is the fic popular? reasonably speaking, sure. but i’ve been plugging this tumblr into the comments of every chapter for a few of those now, and the people who have followed me are few, and the people who’ve actively spoken to me are even less. and this isn’t a bad thing! i don’t want anyone to feel obligated to talk to me because they like my writing. in fact, if they actually want to do it, it’s way more fun for both of us! sound familiar?
if you want people to like your work, you need to make work you can be proud of, anon. people will be far more interested in you if you do. and they’ll give you nice comments and theorize on where you’re going and write essays in your inbox about their favorite parts. that feels so good. way better than raw metrics ever could!
do not chase the high of popularity. it will only hurt you, i promise. someone will like what you do, and if not, write something else you want to write, and keep doing that until someone does finally come along and go, “oh, wow, look at all this content for this thing i didn’t think anyone else would like!”
If you’re the person in your friend group who initiates conversations 90-100% of the time, it can feel tempting sometimes to just stop contacting people to see if they will reach out, and therefore if they actually like you or if you are inflicting yourself on them. The problem with this is there are multiple flaws that can’t be overcome in this type of test, including the fact that if you always reach out and suddenly don’t, people will assume you’re busy rather than that you want them to reach out, or just the fact that some people genuinely enjoy your company but hate or are terrible at remembering to reach out. So basically don’t immediately assume that silence always equals disinterest or disdain; that’s your own hangups talking, not the people you care about.
The best part is the fact that out of the two of them Martha Stewart was the one who went to prison.
Wait…what?
Wiiiiild. He did commit murder (in self defense - no judging) and America‘s Best Housewife was sent to jail because of insider trading, securities fraud, obstruction of justice and conspiracy. This is wiiiiiild 😄😄😄
also he has every right to make fun of kanye west considering snoop has had a successful career for about two decades including his own cookbook and appearing in movies whereas kanye is a flat earther who had to crowdfund another album because he ran out of money despite kim kardashian being with him, not having the money to produce another album should be the metric when you know you can tell a musician has failed somewhere in either money management or actually being a musician rather then a famous trainwreck
snoop dogg is a good man who loves cooking, nature, and supporting the dreams of young children in poverty. kanye west helped get trump elected.
seriously though check out his cookbook its beautiful
and filled with lgiht humor, legit cooking, and charming life stories
Whenever I think about snoop I remember that episode of cribs where he lived in an unusually modest house compared to everyone else on that show, spent the entire time with his young daughter hugging onto his leg and dragging her around as he walked. He even talked about how he didn’t want his kids to be musicians and that he just wants them to have a chance at a normal life / he doesn’t wish music career drama on anyone
The dude is mega down to earth for having a networth of 135 million dollars and staying relevant for longer than some of the top charting musicians have been alive
he says he keeps a supply of poptarts in the house for his nieces/nephews and grandkids but admits theyre really for him and then goes on to discuss what selection of condiments your fridge should have to jazz up leftover takeout
hes one of the most thoroughly human humans ive ever known of
Doesn’t he also coach football for kids, and stops smoking during the season to set a good example for the kids?
all these people going on about how Hozier is the peak representation of musical soft masculinity when Snoop has been out here rocking the smoothest braids and most hype manicures for decades
Have you seen his Planet Earth voiceover video? It’s the best thing I’ve ever heard. Man knows nothing about otters
You would think that the biggest risk of trying out something new is that you won’t like it, but it’s when it’s so good it raises your standards where the real problems start
Folks, friends, y’all…. esk*mo is a slur. I understand a lot of people don’t know that, I don’t want to be a dick about it, but I’ve been seeing it in fics. Wanna write “esk*mo kisses”? Just say “nuzzled noses” or something.
I’m not here to call anybody out, it’s been in multiple fics, I’m not vague posting. This is just a psa. 👍🏻
If you could help me spread awareness about this by reblogging, I’d really appreciate it.

[Images description: a Twitter thread by Alisa Lynn Valdés, M.S., @ AlisaValdesRod1. It goes as follows:
“This quote, from the @ nytimes review of the Oppenheimer film: (quote) “He served as director of a clandestine weapons lab built in a near-desolate stretch of Los Alamos, in New Mexico” (end quote)… It was inhabited by Hispanos. They were given less than 24 hr to leave. Their farms bulldozed. 1.
Many of those families had been on the same land for centuries. The Oppenheimer’s crew literally shot all of their livestock through the head and bulldozed them. People fled on foot with nowhere to go. Land rich, money poor. Their land seized by the government. 2.
All of the Hispano NM men who were displaced by the labs later were hired to work with beryllium by Oppenheimer. The white men got protective gear. The Hispano men did not. 3.
The Hispano men all died of berylliosis. These were US citizens, folks. Their land taken, animals killed, farms bulldozed, forced to work for the people who took everything from them, and killed by those people. 4.
For 20 years I have been trying to sell a film based on the story of Loyda Martinez, a remarkable whistleblower whose family’s land was seized for the labs. Her dad was one of the men who died from beryllium exposure at the labs. She later went to work there too. 5.
She is a computer whiz who rose to the top of her department at Los Alamos. Then she started digging for info on the Hispano men the labs killed, like her father. She filed a class action lawsuit, and won. 6.
The first Hispano governor of NM, Bill Richardson, appointed Loyda to run the state’s human rights commission. She then filed a second class-action against Los Alamos, on behalf of women scientists not paid fairly. 7.
But, no. We want more films about the “complex and troubled” “heroic” white men, who conducted their GENIUS in a “virtually unpopulated” place. These are ALL lies. This is mythology in service to white supremacy and the military industrial complex, masquerading as “nuanced.” 8.
Because of what the labs did to the local Hispano people in northern NM, our communities now have the highest rates of heroin overdose deaths in the nation. The generational trauma and forced poverty is outrageous. We need the real stories of Oppenheimer to be told. End.”

RATING:PARTIALLY RELIABLE
It is true that Hispano people inhabited the Pajarito Plateau before they were displaced by the lab. Most sources state were given 48 hours to leave, not ‘less than 24 hours’ as the tweets claim.
In 1942, the U.S. Army gave 32 Hispano families on the Pajarito Plateau 48 hours to leave their homes and land, in some cases at gunpoint, to build the lab that would create the world’s first atomic bombs, according to relatives of those removed and a former lab employee.’
The claim that 'many of those families had been on the same land for centuries’ seems to be untrue, as the Pajarito Plateau was abandoned by it’s population by the late 16th century, and was not repopulated until the late 19th century. Therefore the families would not have been settled there for centuries, but around 55 years at most, if these dates are correct.
From an Atomic Heritage Foundation article on Los Alamos: 'Though abandoned by the end of the sixteenth century, the area was forever changed by these peoples. […] Descendants of these early Spanish settlers began settling on the Pajarito Plateau in the nineteenth century.’
From a National Park Service article on Los Alamos: 'Although people had been using the Pajarito Plataeu on a seasonal basis, homesteading originally began in March 1887 when Juan Louis Garcia filed for a homesteaded. The majority of the homesteaders on the plataeu were Hispanic.’
Loyda Martinez has recounted that homes were bulldozed and that some (not all as said in the tweets) livestock were shot, and some let loose. The National Nuclear Security Administration has denied that homes were destroyed or that livestock were killed.
From Reuters article “Oppenheimer’ and the story behind those who lost their land to the lab’: 'Homes were bulldozed, livestock shot or let loose, and families given little or no compensation, according to Loyda Martinez, 67, who worked as a computer scientist for 32 years at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and cited accounts from evicted ranching and farming families who are her neighbors in the Espanola Valley.
A National Nuclear Security Administration spokesperson said Hispanic farmers were compensated at a significantly lower rate than white property owners but the agency was not aware of homes being destroyed and animals killed or abandoned. The agency did not address whether homesteaders were forcefully removed.’
The claims that all of the Hispano men who were displaced went to work at the lab, and all died of berrylliosis after not being provided protective gear like the white workers, is suspect. It is unlikely that all of them would die of berylliosis, as berylliosis only affects 2-5% of workers exposed to beryllium. Furthermore, the mortality rate is 5-38%, so the odds of the entire group dying from this condition seems extremely unlikely.
From a scientific paper on Berylliosis: 'CBD is a hypersensitivity granulomatous disease that occurs in 2 to 5% of beryllium-exposed workers […] Overall mortality rates are 5% to 38%’
Furthermore, I could not find any source suggesting that the Hispano men were given less protective gear than white workers. Whilst exposure to radiation undoubtedly put health at risk, it does not seem that this was targeted at the Hispano workers.
Furthermore, I could not find any evidence that Loyda Martinez filed or won a class action lawsuit regarding the discrimination, lack of protective gear, or deaths of the Hispano workers.
From a Mary Sue article on the twitter thread (please note that the Mary Sue is less reliable than most sources I use): 'Valdes also alleges that Martinez filed and won another lawsuit against the lab for denying Hispano men safety gear when working with beryllium. However, there are no public records of this lawsuit, and the claims about Martinez’s father and other Hispano men being victims of beryllium exposure cannot be verified.’
However, it does seem that Loyda Martinez did lobby the government on this subject, even if there was no lawsuit. Her father did die after working with beryllium, and she did serve on New Mexico human rights commission.
In 2000 Congress acknowledged that radiation and other toxins had contributed to the deaths or illnesses of thousands of nuclear weapons workers.
The Department of Labor set up a compensation fund for those affected but it took years for families to be paid, said Martinez, who served on New Mexico’s state human rights commission in the early 2000s.”
The second class action suit referenced does seem to exist, and succeeded in getting a payout to female and hispano workers who faced pay discrimination.Loyda Martinez was one of plaintiffs.
From a Mary Sue article on the twitter thread (please note that the Mary Sue is less reliable than most sources I use): 'Valdés detailed the story of Loyda Martinez, who in 2006 was one of five plaintiffs to originate a class-action discrimination lawsuit against Los Alamos National Laboratory for paying female and male Hispano workers less than white males. The plaintiffs succeeded in obtaining a $12 million award for members of the lawsuit.’
I have had difficulty verifying the claim that 'Because of what the labs did to the local Hispano people in northern NM, our communities now have the highest rates of heroin overdose deaths in the nation.’New Mexico has the 6th highest drug overdose mortality rate of US states, but heroin is not the leading cause of drug death in the state.
From an AP News article on overdose and drug use in New Mexico: 'Fentanyl and meth have surpassed heroin and prescription opioids as the leading causes of overdose deaths in the state. In fact, the two drugs were involved in 78% of overdose deaths in 2020.’
Furthermore, the claim that the labs inflict 'forced poverty’ in the community is not backed by statistics.
It’s here !! The guide for two-legged people who don’t know how to draw wheelchairs !!!
7 pages of infodump !
Disclaimer
: I don’t know everything, I have one (1) experience of wheelchair user
who used both bad and good chairs, and I share what I learned.
Image description :
1) Calvin in his wheelchair saying “yo” under a
huge title “how to draw manual wheelchairs properly by Calvin Arium, a
wheelchair user comic artist”.
2) A character says “my character self propels in a chair that was outdated in 1970 lol” Calvin says “so it looks like you two legged people don’t know the difference between an hospital chair and a chair made to be independant” an arrow point the crapppy chair, saying “we never want to see this again”
a bubble says “the hospital chair is extremely unpractical, tough considering it’s cheaper than a good custom chair a lot of us have only this”
3) a character hurt himself trying to reach the wheels of the hospital chair. Several arrows point why the chair is unpractical : “high backrest restrain shoulders movement” “huge armrest restrains wheel access” “separated footrest : amovible, cheap, bulky” “x structure, foldable but heavy” “huge front casters for stability” “heavy wheels”
4) Several arrows point an active wheelchair (the KSL by Küshall) : “usually no armrest” “a low backrest allow more movement” “light, design, ferning expersive” “special cushion to avoind injuries” “knee angle is usually 90°” “one single piece of frame, sometimes entirely welded” “weight : from 4 to 10kg” “often rigid” “center of the wheel is the center of gravity” “higher quality wheels : less spikes”
5) A hand grab different parts of the wheel, pushing harder in the second half. Bubbles says “some have gloves, some don’t. The hand must grab the biggest area possible. Less movement = more energy. This is a common but not only way to push.Calvin is on his back wheels, rolling on grass and dirt bubble says “popping a wheelie is when a wheelchair user rolls on their back wheels to roll on every complicated surface.
6) several drawings illustrate the folding frame, the ergonomic but rigid and expensive backrest, the separated footrest (only for folding frame), the handles, the folding handles, athe amovibles handles, or no handles, the cool fancy loopwheels, the pretty custom colors
7) More Features ! The fancy rigid-foldable frame, the anti tippers (sometimes used by beginners), the motorization (wheels, smart drive) when propelling yourself is difficult Calvin says “and now vroom vroom motherfuckers”
the angel staying over at my house asked for a nightlight in their room and i told them buddy, don’t you produce your own light? what’re you gonna do with more? and they said they wanted to see why people like it so much. and also that the nightlight i own is blue and they’re been trying to understand color. anyways i think they’ve stared at it for an hour now
the angel staying over at my house said their eyes hurt from staring, so i took them to the store to get some eye drops. well midway through the medicine aisle i turned around to see them flashing in and out of colors like a combusting star, so i asked them what was up without looking directly at them. they told me that there were too many people at the store and they forgot how they looked. which. is understandable to be honest they’ve only been on earth for a little over 24 hours. my phone started to melt a little when i showed them pictures of themself, but my hand feels fine even though they held it while calming down. they’re currently resting and i am not sure what to do with 5 empty bottles of eye drops
the angel staying over at my house has been eating my food for the past few days and i don’t really know if they can taste it because the food sort of bursts into ash and fire before it reaches their mouth? but they seem to enjoy eating it or at least watching me cook. they tried to help me fry some onions earlier but the stove flame turned from blue to white and the onions started crackling instead of sizzling so they backed off. however they have the ability to chop garlic like a pro
the angel staying over at my house is taking daily walks with me around the neighborhood and i don’t think they know about animals yet. we were going past someone’s house and this labrador started barking at us. normal, right? but the angel staying over at my house asked me if that was music. and i had to stop and think about that one for a second. in the end i said it can be music to us, it’s just that the dog doesn’t know it (and may never know it, which is a real tragedy). then they asked me what’s a dog
the angel staying over at my house went to the library with me and they wanted to know if humans actually dream or if that was something people made up for television. guess what the staff told us that the full name of the angel staying over at my house couldn’t be printed on a library card so i just said well couldn’t we have one anyways? and now we do but it’s really like the first third of their name and not written correctly. oh well. i have to go help carry some huge books about neuroscience into the house
today the angel staying over at my house came up to me and started crying tears that melted through my carpet. told me they realised they wouldn’t be able to use their library card after they left earth and i. i honestly forgot that was going to happen. but i told them hey dude that’s just how humans feel too. can’t read all the books, but the fact that you got to read some is worth bragging about, right? they could tell all of their angel friends about the cool stuff they’ve done. and they said that they used to think that the world was so small and that humans were being petty about missing earth but now they live here and they feel small too. and they’re not sure what to tell their angel friends.
so i asked to hold their hand again. they didn’t burn me this time, either. and i asked them if this moment felt small to them. they said it didn’t.
anyways we made popcorn and watched it’s a wonderful life. they told me that angels don’t speak like that at all by the way
