Okay, so, strictly speaking, the infamous Leviticus 18:22 does say “forbidden.” Here’s the thing:
1) The word translated as “forbidden” is “toevah.” While that translation isn’t … wrong, it’s sort of like saying “McMansion” means “really big house.” There are a lot of connotations in that word. The specific issue with toevah is that we … sort of … don’t know anymore exactly what it meant. Based on context, it seems likely that the word referred to something ritually forbidden. This part of Torah was written not only as a guide for future generations, but also to say “so, look around, see your neighbors? DON’T DO THAT.“ Thus, if we interpret “toevah” to mean something that’s forbidden to do as a ritual before G-d, then the verse says nothing whatsoever about Adam and Steve and their two kids and their dog–it’s saying you shouldn’t have sex with another man in the Temple as a sacrifice.
2) Following the same “this is ritually forbidden” logic of toevah, this verse may also be interpreted as “don’t do sex magic,” which was a thing in. Like. A lot of fucking cultures at the time.
3) Hebrew is a highly gendered language, and the grammatical gender in this verse is really really weird. One of the “men” in this verse is given female grammar. Why? Who fucking knows, man, this isn’t the only grammatical oddity in Torah. (There are also places where G-d is referred to as plural, and also as female.) One suggestion is that this is a way of creating a diminutive–that is, that the verse should be read as “a man should not lie with a boy.”Now, it’s worth noting that modern secular scholarship has concluded the written Torah was written down around the 6th century BCE, and most non-Orthodox Jewish scholars are like “yeah, all things considered, that sounds pretty legit.”
Do you know what else was happening around the 6th century BCE? What laypeople tend to mean when they say “ancient Greece” was happening.
Do you know what happened a lot in that time period in Greece? Dudes forming relationships with younger boys, like ages 10-15, and using them for sex in exchange for financial gifts, mentorship, etc. While we don’t know just how young some of these younger boys may have been, we do know some were prepubescent. In light of this, and also something I mentioned under the first point–”see your neighbors? DON’T DO THAT,” if this verse is interpreted to say “a man should not lie with a boy,” then it’s pretty clearly “my dudes, my fellows, my lads, don’t be fucking pedophiles.”
4) Because of the grammar I mentioned in #3, it’s also possible that “should not lie with a man as with a woman” is actually referring to a place, not an abstract personhood: a man shouldn’t have sex with another man in a woman’s bed. In the time period, a woman’s bed was sort of like–that was her place, her safe sanctuary. It was also a ritually holy place where babies were made. By having sex in her bed, you’re violating her safe space (and also introducing a man who may not be a male relative, thus forcing her into breaking the laws of modesty). If this verse is read this way, then it should be taken to mean “don’t sexually violate a woman’s safety and modesty.”
5) And as an offshoot of #4, this may be a second verse relating to infidelity. Which woman’s bed is any random dude in 600 BCE most likely to have access to? His wife’s. But laws were administered differently based on whether the person they pertained to was slave or free, male or female, and so on–thus, a man committing adultery with a woman would be treated differently than man committing adultery with a man (especially because the latter would carry no chance of an illegitimate pregnancy).
So you’ll note, there are a lot of ways to read this verse, and only a one-to-one translation with no cultural awareness produces “being gay is wrong, all of the time”.
(You’ll also notice the word “abomination” is nowhere to be found. That’s like … a straight-up fiction created for who only knows what reason.)

Sex Repulsion is not the same thing as, or an excuse for, Sex Negativity

I am a sex-repulsed asexual. This means that I am uncomfortable and repulsed by the idea of engaging in sexual acts. This does not mean that I have an excuse to be repulsed by other people’s sexual attraction or the right to police how other people engage in or express sexual acts or attraction.
Young queer people need to learn the difference between sex repulsion and sex negativity, and actively work to unlearn sex-negative attitudes. Asexuality, even sex-repulsed asexuality, is and should be fully compatible with sex positivity.
If you are uncomfortable with the idea of other people feeling sexual attraction or engaging in sexual acts that do not involve you in any way, that is not sex repulsion it is the cultural Christianity and you need to seriously work on that.
I’m a bit tired of people calling asexuality ‘not a big deal.’
Here’s the thing, I never thought it was a big deal either. I didn’t have a big angsty coming out about being aro or being ace. It was difficult in a sense to think of the future I’d imagined for myself not coming true, but I didn’t mourn that future. I was happy that there were others out there feeling what I was feeling and going through what I was going through.
But it’s become a big deal. It’s become a big deal because as I have grown older, I have realised the future is still fucking blurry. I have no idea what to expect from it. Society was not built for those who do not or cannot follow its rules. I’ve realised just how MUCH people say aphobic stuff on a daily basis. I feel constantly othered by comments that carelessly remind us we are out of the majority. That remind us again and again that we are NOT the norm and will never BE the norm. I rarely see myself on TV and in books and in movies. People feel weird about it, so they just never bring it up like an unspoken secret. I’m constantly doubted and told I’m mistaken about my own identity, which causes anxiety and self doubt so many years later. People make a variety of assumptions about me and tell me it’s 'sad’ and I’m 'missing out.’
It’s not just about 'not having sex.’ It’s about feeling like you’re the only one at a concert that doesn’t know the words. it about society making you feel like you’re just a little bit off. My sexuality/romantic identity doesn’t define me. I don’t WANT it to be a big deal.
But it is. It is a big deal because all of you make it a big deal.

I’m not saying Canadian truth-in-advertising laws are perfect, but I just got a promotional email with five separate footnoted disclaimers in the space of as many sentences, and it’s kind of fun to see exactly how they plan to screw you over clearly outlined in bulleted list format.
I still get business-to-business emails for a certain industry, and I often get both the American-directed and Canadian-directed emails. Now, truth in advertising doesn’t exactly apply to B2B advertising, but it did change what precedents were set with relation to fraud.
And now and again, you do get two wildly different emails, mostly of the variety where some claims just … don’t appear in the Canadian version of the email. Rows missing off comparison tables and the like. My holy grail, should I ever receive it, will be when the Canadian version simply makes no claims whatsoever.
I think my favourite example that I’ve encountered of promotional claims varying by jurisdiction is a breakfast cereal where the front of the American packaging says it contains 22 essential vitamins and minerals, but the front of the Canadian packaging for the exact same cereal with the exact same listed ingredients only says it contains 9 essential vitamins and minerals.

When I was in college, there was a solid year where our lgbt group did this with two bathrooms at the end of a hall that were used by like, maybe 20 people. They would put up gendered signs and we kept stealing them. And then we started writing random things on the walls INCLUDING full word for word copies of personal ads from the back of 1980′s advocate magazines.
It got to the point where the building management was on a hunt trying to find who was doing this and we had to start hiding our faces so as to not get caught on the security cameras. Our faculty advisor came down to the office one day and was like “do you guys know anything about this” essentially as we’re trying to close a comically full drawer of stolen bathroom signs, and we’re like “no” and they were like “great.”

I feel like I want to explain to young tumblr users who weren’t born yet that MulderxScully was a revolutionary ship. No, it was not queer but that is not the only way to be revolutionary.
In the 90s when The X Files was airing, media was like misogyny soup. Yes, there were exceptions. But casual sexism was so ubiquitous it was like we were all frogs simmering in it and if you dared to say, hey, uh, isn’t this joke a little shitty to the wife? Or maybe this female character could do something other than pose and ask questions so the male lead can answer them? Then you were a hairy feminist outcast loser.
Scully was a lot of things but she was not that. All the “You’re not going to believe this, Scully!” memes are based on the fact that Mulder, an attractive white dude, wanted nothing more in his entire life than to share his passions with this tiny redhead. Was he nuts? Yes. But on many other shows, he would have talked down to her, would’ve ignored her, would’ve mocked her. He didn’t.
When you go back and watch The X Files, there’s these moments where Mulder and Scully look at each other like, “wait did Jack Black really just say that” and the significance to fan history isn’t just the sexual tension. It’s that, yeah, and the origin of the word ship, and the ‘will-they-won’t-they’. But the most important thing about those looks is how they told the audience that Mulder was looking to Scully for something. A man was looking at a woman and asking with his eyes “what do you think about this?” Was he also saying “and do you want to bone about it?” Yeah, yeah he was. But the first thing was sexy as hell.
Respecting a woman’s expertise and folding information she provided into his worldview was a revolutionary thing for a man to do on television at the time. Thank you for coming to my MSR ted talk.
I happened to be writing for a TV magazine back in the early 90s, and remember getting the very first tape (VHS! hah!) of The X-Files to review. I watched it about five times, and of all things that hit me and I couldn’t stop squawking about in the article that resulted was the complete upending of the usual dynamic between male and female characters. It wasn’t just the respect for Scully that Mulder displayed (even in that first episode where he was deeply suspicious and wary of a new partner being forced on him, and before he had the opportunity to fully appreciate her expertise) but it was the inversion of trope of the unreliable, flighty female and the rock solid, dependable man. A tv show that actually allowed the main lead to have EMOTIONS! That allowed the female lead to be analytical, and head-first, and possibly even smarter than him!
You are a very lucky person if you don’t realise just how revolutionary this was.
(And I was a women’s studies major at the time, so was pretty steeped in a wide range of media, and still I tell you - REVOLUTIONARY.)
