“having sex with your friends is basically incest” is a take of all time

this deserves to go in the takes hall of fame

it’s like that take that went around about how dating someone with the same skin, hair and eye color as you was basically incest.

It was a post mocking it, and people in the note just went “um actually that is true tho” like wtf is wrong with you people?

the genius of megamind (beyond the obvious genius ofc) is that it’s superman parody actually presents a genuinely unsettling depiction of the “hero” that I like wayyy better than “what if superman was evil” or “what if superman was wrong”… it’s “what if superman didn’t care”

I wouldn’t say he “didn’t care” more like he was burnt out

He played the role since he was a child and now is in his what 30s? 40s?

He knew there was never any real danger with Megamind in charge so decided to pursue something that’s a passion and doesn’t come naturally easy to him

but it was still a dick move

(via @uwugenides )

One of the things that always jumped out to me about this reveal is that it implies that Metro Man was also the very first person to recognize that MegaMind wasn’t really evil. He knew his nemesis wouldn’t actually hurt anyone if he won, he knew that this universally reviled pariah never really had any more choice than he did.

The rest of Metro City treats MegaMind like a real, sincere, serious threat once he’s unopposed, and it takes them a while to learn otherwise. But Metro Man? He’s not surprised to see him and Roxanne working together, he doesn’t act like there’s any kind of threat beyond his cover being blown. He wastes no time in coming clean once the cat’s out of the bag. He’s been working with this guy all his life. Besides his own mental health, I get the impression that he also recognized that this would be good for MegaMind too.

I just really love how in a superhero pastiche that asks “Is the villain really so bad, and the hero really so good?” the answer is “no, but that’s okay”. It’s okay that Metro Man isn’t a paragon. It’s okay that he has to take care of himself. It’s okay for him to step down and live his own life. It wouldn’t be okay for him to leave people in danger, but it’s pretty clear he knew he wasn’t doing that.

And it carries to the end. MegaMind becomes the city’s new protector, but it’s clear that he’s still got some issues to work through, and he’s getting help working through them. He’s got a support network, he’s willing to put in the effort, but he’s not the shining paragon Metro Man was believed to be. And he doesn’t NEED to be that paragon. He’s still good. He’s still protecting people. And he’s not alone in it.

God, there’s just so many shitty “Superheroes would have character flaws too, and that’s why they’d actually suck” deconstructions floating around, it’s nice to see a story that acknowledges that no one can live up to that kind of role, but that’s okay!

megamind once again proving to be the best modern superhero movie

Psychologist: How come evil scientists in movies are always biologists, physicists, chemists, and engineers?

Military Scientist: Yeah! Where’s all the evil mad military scientists!? Do you have any idea how many people I’ve killed using science? How many people that other people have killed thanks to my military theories and formulas?

Astronomer: Uh… yeah. Well, a mad astronomer could make first contact with aliens and convince them to take over the world? That would be a pretty cool villain idea. Of course it is pretty unlikely we’ll ever get to meet aliens but y'know…

Meteorologist: Or a mad meteorologist could… like… predict the weather incorrectly. And minorly inconvenience a bunch of people!

Psychologist: Oh, so like you!

Meteorologist: shut up

Geologist: An evil geologist could discover some evil rocks! And add them to his private rock collection so no one else gets to see them! That’s just so EVIL!

Anthropologist: Oh, or a mad anthropologist could make real life have regionally and historically inaccurate language, clothing, and architecture, just like in a movie! It’d be completely immersion breaking!

Ornithologist: *gasps* THEY COULD RELEASE LOONS EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD AND ANNOY PEOPLE WITH REGIONALLY INACCURATE BIRD CALLS!

Psychologist: You know what? I was actually an evil mad psychologist this whole time and was trying to manipulate you guys into turning evil, but you all just kinda suck. I don’t know if I even want you on my side anymore.

Military Scientist: *whispers into radio*She said I suck, start the bombardment

prokopetz:

greatlyamused:

prokopetz:

Tiers of “heroes don’t kill people, but we still want the villain to die because something something justice” in ascending order of “well, technically”:

  1. Hero simply leaves; villain coincidentally killed shortly thereafter by something unrelated. Example: murdered by treacherous minions.
  2. Villain accidentally kills self while attempting to harm hero. Example: shoots at hero, misses, struck by improbable ricochet.
  3. Hero and villain’s conflict leads to perilous locale from which only hero escapes. Example: fighting on train tracks, villain hit by train.
  4. Villain defeated non-lethally; dies anyway due to unpredictable or outside factors. Example: villain disarmed, dies of magic curse.
  5. Hero employs lethal force, but that isn’t what kills villain. Example: villain evades hero’s attack and falls off cliff.
  6. Hero deliberately employs environmental hazard to kill villain. Example: hero throws villain into live electrical wires.
  7. Hero apparently kills villain; later developments reveal villain survived and was killed by something else. Example: hero kicks villain off cliff; post-credits bonus scene shows them getting up and walking away, then getting eaten by a bear.

you forgot the main one where the hero shows he isn’t a blood thirsty dude out for vengeance by trying to save the villain last second, but the villain rejects this and voluntarily submits to whatever was about to kill them

That’s more of a sub-trope – it can land anywhere from tiers 2 to 5 depending on how exactly the villain got to be in that predicament in the first place.

I wanna add that years ago I watched one of the Strawberry Shortcake specials with my little brother, and he said of the Pieman, “Uugh! He’s always…doin’ things, and coming outta places.”

It’s all true. Every word.

So true, in both the Strawberry Shortcake and the (much wider) meta senses.

Let’s take a moment to salute the Pieman’s voice actor, Robert Ridgely, who had an extraordinary career in both live action and voiceover work. Scroll down through his credits on the IMDb page and you’ll be amazed.

He had a rep in the business for committing absolutely wholeheartedly to anything he did… and you can hear it here. :)

I needed this drag. Let’s change guys and not look back

working out your brain is a must!!

• hydrate it by drinking lots of water

• eat dark chocolate and blueberries and walnuts and salmon and other foods high in antioxidants!!

• play little brain games on your phone; I like wordconenct! anything that makes you think!

• read books. It’s simple but necessary. Even better - join a book club, or read with a friend, so you can have discussions after. This will improve your reading comprehension.

• do puzzles - it doesnt have to be sudoku, I love playing Beat Saber on the Oculus Rift because it makes my brain have to match colorful patterns to physical movements very quickly!

• learn a new dance - even a tik tok trendy dance. Learning new dance moves are proven to strengthen synapses!!

• go bird watching, or foraging, or anything outdoors that requires you to explore pattern recognition and visual searching

• watch a movie with the intent of analysis - this is best done with a cinephile friend!! talk about tropes and symbolism and character growth

• cross stitch, or sew, or do anything that requires matching nimble hand movements to patterns

• play or learn an instrument!

• develop a consistent sleep schedule (or as close to consistent as you can get!)

• when eating, try to identify the ingredients and flavors you’re perceiving!

I hope this helps :)

I like how this went from me feeling like “hm why is this attacking me 🤨” at first, but feeling grateful seeing an added guide on a genuine expansion on a “ how to” work out the brain. This genuinely helps a bunch. People find solace in doing activities that get them through life by doing said activities of phone/tv or if that’s all they’ve ever known in their life to get them through things + etc tho. However, this was very impt to point out. Slowly beginning incorporating things to work the brain in ones own time.

What the fuck is this??????????

Folks: you CANNOT censor trigger tags. When you block a tag, it doesn’t block other “spellings” of it. Writing it as “r@pe” or “r4p3” means that someone who has “tw rape” as a blocked tag will still see that post because you didn’t wanna say the word rape. You are hurting people. Do not censor words, because people do not have those filtered out.

And honestly if you can’t even write the word rape to protect other people then you probably aren’t old/mature enough to be on this website.

I also like it when they’re like hey what’s up or something personal/natural instead of the welcome to wherever how can I serve you bit.

I also like it when they are sitting down or listening to music they clearly enjoy

There is something so nourishing about walking into a place of business and immediately thinking “huh, I wouldn’t have guessed this place would be playing this kind of music” only to see an employee absolutely head-banging along because today is their day to pick the CD and they are living

Despite what capitalists might think, I do not want to roleplay being royalty in the presence of slaves when I seek professional assistance in obtaining my basic human needs.

look, I know I’ve talked about this essay (?) before but like,

If you ever needed a good demonstration of the quote “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”, have I got an exercise for you.

Somebody made a small article explaining the basics of atomic theory but it’s written in Anglish. Anglish is basically a made-up version of English where they remove any elements (words, prefixes, etc) that were originally borrowed from romance languages like french and latin, as well as greek and other foreign loanwords, keeping only those of germanic origin.

What happens is an english which is for the most part intelligible, but since a lot everyday english, and especially the scientific vocabulary, has has heavy latin and greek influence, they have to make up new words from the existing germanic-english vocabulary. For me it kind of reads super viking-ey.

Anyway when you read this article on atomic theory, in Anglish called Uncleftish Beholding, you get this text which kind of reads like a fantasy novel. Like in my mind it feels like it recontextualizes advanced scientific concepts to explain it to a viking audience from ancient times.

Even though you’re familiar with the scientific ideas, because it bypasses the normal language we use for these concepts, you get a chance to examine these ideas as if you were a visitor from another civilization - and guess what, it does feel like it’s about magic. It has a mythical quality to it, like it feels like a book about magic written during viking times. For me this has the same vibe as reading deep magic lore from a Robert Jordan book.
