Can everyone who reads this PLEASE reblog it?!?!?  Libraries literally saved my life as a child!

Being abused at home, bullied at school and lost in the world, the library and all the books I could escape to the most amazing worlds, kept me alive!

I would walk to the library, and spend all day, from 10 am to 9 pm reading there!! I got special awards for how many books I read, I wrote little blurbs on why i loved the books (probably why I love to BETA and do ARCs)

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE Just hit the green arrows and the reblog!!!

As a 50 year old woman, the library offers me so much. Digital art pads to borrow, 3D printing, book clubs that are face to face (yeah, the introvert likes face to face because a moderator will stomp on anyone getting snarky)

New books in LARGE PRINT! I’m visually challenged and as much as I love my kindle, The feel of a real book in my hands will always be a beloved feeling!

Our library also has quarterly books sales of almost free books!! For 5$USD we get in a day early and can buy as many as we want. Anyone else has to wait and there is a limit for the first 2 days.

Also many, many libraries have inter library loan(it may be called something different). This means if they don’t have the item you want, they can get it for you. This may include photocopy/pdf of articles. This can also include along with books and DVDs, microfilm/fiche which is also a huge resource. Check around for libraries that are listed as depositories if you want to look at government documents.

Remember that many colleges and universities have open stacks for the public. You will likely have to pay a membership fee but you will get to stuff.

I love the library ☺

The library was one of my favorite places to go as a kid and I still live to go and just. Sit and read. Or do homework. The university I’m at has a massive 8-story one I love to just wonder around in~ Great places

Libraries are amazing places, we need to protect them to ensure their continued existence.

I used to wander about the fiction section in my local library, and choose books with the most interesting titles - I discovered two amazing authors that way

If you feel disconnected from your local community & want to find ways to get involved, seriously consider spending some time at the library. Go to some events! Organize a reading group!

Support your libraries!

Read banned books!

People who don’t learn can be more easily controlled and told what to think!

Echoing @mathcat345, if your school has banned a book, your library will likely have it. Read it. Fuck censorship.

Don’t let them bury me as someone I’m not.

Hey, I reblogged this yesterday and at the time  Ithought the work was really important to just let be on it’s own as a piece of art… But since then some of the notes I saw were bleak and I just want to say that I’m not an expert by any means, I’m just a person whose watched a youtube video or two but as a trans person you don’t have no options when you die.

What you need is something called an advanced directive - a will is not going to cut it because that won’t some into play until after you’re buried. The youtuber and mortician Caitlin Doughty has a video about it, specifically as it relates to trans people: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVgumSUZQRI

You need to make sure the right people look after you after death.

A potluck is where everyone invited to a gathering is to bring a dish of their choosing. This is meant to be a huge, shared meal. The “luck” part in potluck comes from the host placing a little baby Jesus in one of the pots. And the person who finds it in their food? Well..

Being disabled or chronically ill means being terrified of your bad days.

No, really. Terrified.

It is genuine terror when you forget something important. It is true fear when you miss a step and fall. It is horror when you realize you never texted your friend back about something exciting. Because, a bad day for an able-bodied person is just a bad day. For the disabled, it’s: “am I having a flare? Is my illness getting worse? Who knows where I am if I hurt myself and need help? Is this it? Is the life I’ve been trying to build over? Should I see another (fucking useless) doctor? Have I documented my symptoms enough that they’ll care?”

Because for us, it’s that little. A mysterious bruise, forgetting to send an email - it could be just a bad day. Or it could be a recurrence of our worst symptoms, signs our health is deteriorating, because at the end of the day, we have no real control over our health, hard as we try. We can do everything right, and it will still not be enough.

You don’t get to have bad days, as a disabled person.

i feel like counter-trolling is an essential skill that kids online aren’t learning and it’s kinda worrying

like back in my day, the day of online forums, learning how to trick someone in to getting themselves banned was an essential skill. if you could tell someone was a chud, you would ask them short, leading questions and watch them get frustrated and post longer and longer rants until they said something that would catch a mod’s attention and get them banned and/or at least publicly humiliated.

and guess what? that’s the exact same tactics the alt-right use now. these people are exclusively acting in bad faith. every interaction these people post online is done with the intention of getting someone to respond to them so they can screenshot the massive paragraphs of text and laugh

so, what’s the solution?

dare ‘em to post dick pics.

don’t acknowledge the content of the stuff they post. if you see someone trying to engage you in bad faith just dare them to post pictures of their penis until they either get frustrated and leave or get frustrated and do it. either way they lose.

this is the tactic used by the fans of a podcast (that i haven’t listened to) called the Chapo Trap House, and 4chan’s /pol/ users fucking HATE them. they hate Chapo Trap House and think they’re crazy because Chapo Trap House fans refuse to engage in meaningful debate and repeatedly demand dick pics. they get frustrated and leave. it works.

Some of you never used your position as a mod on an a series of unfortunate events forum to get a racist troll to post evidence of their tax fraud and it shows

…that second comment is oddly specific and I’m a little scared

Idk who all follows this account, but I’ve had a few folks reach out and ask when I’ll start writing again. I’m planning to start again very soon, but I first want to address something I’ve been seeing in my feed lately. Over the past few months, I’ve noticed a surge in the number of bigoted and hateful posts thinly-veiled as kink and BDSM. I’ve seen a disappointing number of people start making posts that display or outright support Nazis and other hate groups. I’ve also seen quite a few users with Nazi dog whistles in their usernames (e.g., SS, 88, which are references to particularly cruel units that operated for the Nazi military in WWII). I want to apologize in advance for the following, which is uncharacteristically angry of me and requires me to step out of my submissive headspace to write:

As I start posting again, I have no doubt that my feed will continue to be blighted by such scummy posts and users. Nazis and hate groups are scum that are in no way friends to queer folk and sexual deviants like us. I’m asking that if you like my posts and see posts or users like what I’ve described, report them. Stamp them out like the maggots they are. And if you take issue with my vehement disgust with Nazis and their ilk, you’re part of the problem.

As a gender nonconforming cis dyke, I’ve received a lot of weird hostility in bathrooms. Like, a lot. The mild but frequent stuff is when people see me, do a visible double take, and go check the sign again. The not entirely common, more aggressive stuff is when people verbally question why I’m there. More than once I’ve had someone call me “it” or confront me about my gender in public settings. I’ve had people try to tell me to leave.

But the only place I’ve had someone physically try to remove me from a bathroom was in London.

Some random middle aged woman thought that she had the right to put her hands on me simply because I don’t match her ideas of what femininity is, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this happened in a place where transphobia is running rampant. Of all the weird stuff that’s happened to me in pretty conservative parts of the US, they simply are not as emboldened here as they currently are in the UK; but don’t think for a moment that they don’t intend to get there.

Trans people are reason enough to fight these bigots. It’s a good enough reason. Trans people deserve respect, dignity, compassion, and protection. But if you think they’ll be satisfied with only pushing trans people back into the closet, you’re utterly deluded. They want absolute conformity, simple as that, and they’re increasing their push here too.

Any lesbian who aligns herself with transphobia is a traitor. Simple as that.

What’s wrong with ethnic cleansing? Violent groups regardless of ethnicity deserve to be abolished. Do not apply American ideas of racism to this conflict.

If you get the chance to, always thank cleaning/sanitation staff such as janitors, maids, and trash collectors. Make it known that you appreciate and value the job they do.

Cleaning/sanitation jobs are some of the most vital jobs in society, without them we’d be buried in our own trash and all public spaces would quickly become unsafely unhygienic. Despite how vital their role is to society they’re often treated poorly and generally looked down on by the rest of society. Treating them with respect and kindness and letting them know you appreciate the job they do can go a long way in making their day and their job in general better, and you do want happy cleaning/sanitation workers because of how important they are.

It’s that time of the year where police departments start warning everyone about “drugs disguised as candy” for Halloween!

And while everyone’s reaction is usually “haha they’re so stupid lol!!” Let’s not forget that this is one of the ways they transparently demonize addicts in order to keep the populace convinced that they are evil, horrible people that deserve to be locked up. They know that citizens will eventually start thinking “hey, they’re really only hurting themselves, shouldn’t they get help instead of being punished?” so in order to keep everyone comfortable with criminalizing drug addiction, they spread the idea that addicts have a secret agenda to turn EVERYONE into addicts, so they just *NEED* to keep them locked up.

“They’re coming after our children! They’re trying to turn our children into _____!” (Does that sound familiar?)

We need to go harder at humiliating these fuckers every year they keep trying to spread this bullshit.

[Photo ID - text that reads, “With Halloween fast approaching, please watch out for these. They look like sweet tarts, skittles or some may look like bubble gum. They are called Rainbow or Skittles Fentanyl and can be deadly. They can also be disguised as other favorite candies. Please pay close attention to your child’s candy especially at Trick-or-Treat time.” An image of brightly-colored pill tablets is posted beneath the text. /End ID]

Really, the answer to most ‘so many cases of X didn’t use to exist!’ complaints is that THEY USED TO DIE.

Allergies? Gluten intolerance? Cystic Fibrosis? Seizures? Asthma? Diabetes?

THOSE USED TO BE ALL BUT DEATH SENTENCES.

Y'all ever notice that when people say “There were never that many X people before!!!” X people almost always seem to be Housebound due to Lack of Accessibility or Chance of Severe Illness, Unrepresented because no one Put A Name to the Demographic, Oppressed with Physical Violence and Societal Ostracization, or straight up fucking Dead?? Just me?

This oversight is called Survivorship Bias, wherein one looks at a dataset comparing two numbers and doesn’t think about the other end of the numbers. In this case, they compare the number of people with allergies today vs the 1800s, and they find that there are more people with allergies today. Does this mean that we’re doing something wrong now? Are we ‘softer’ now? Absolutely not- it just means that they’re living past childhood.

It is a well-known fact that, when motorcyclists wear helmets, they end up in the hospital more often. Why? Are helmets more dangerous? Absolutely not! They’re ending up in the hospital instead of the morgue.

This also applies to mental illness, or things that used to be considered mental illness (homosexuality, gender dysphoria, being female and having opinions) - those people were institutionalized, hidden away. Those places were underfunded, brutal, inhumane, and often deadly.

You know what trans liberation is?

It’s not trans people being allowed to serve in the military, or work as cops. It’s not trans judges. It’s not creating Byzantine, draconian pathways to medicines and procedures and name changes. It’s not Joe Biden entertaining wealthy trans people at the White House, or your State Governor appearing with a few trans people when they sign a bill. It’s not trans lawmakers.

You know what trans liberation is?

It’s the decriminalization of trans existence. It’s the 5 Black trans women in Milwaukee, WI who should all still be alive. It’s the demedicalization of trans bodies, with free and easy access to the medical science created to serve people like us. It’s community organizing. It’s dismantling capitalism, so trans people do have to choose between hormones and rent. It’s the elimination of rent. It’s letting people do what they want with their bodies, when they want, and how they want.

We will never have trans liberation in a neoliberal, White supremacist, cishetero imperialist patriarchy.

The systems must change. This new world must, at all costs, be born.

We can start now.

I hate to do this again, but I’m going to need some help paying for bills. A clerical error at FSSA means Kaleigh’s SNAP card still hasn’t been replaced since the purse was stolen in July, and we just got a letter saying they’re going to replace the card but they’ve also reduced zir benefits.

We’ve had trouble getting a new PCP so ze can continue receiving zir prescription meds, so we’re resorting to other sources that unfortunately don’t take insurance; and even those don’t provide all zir meds, and they might not arrive this month.

I have $47 in my bank account. Zir phone bill will be $70 near the end of the month. Prescriptions are about $50 (because I didn’t realize I could order the non-HRT Rx’s at the same site as the HRT ones, and $18 shipping is biting my ass).

the thing about israel and palestine is that only one side has the power to end the conflict. israel could end the occupation, end the blockade, stop the settlements, stop the apartheid, and let palestinians return to their stolen homes. an end to israeli violence–to israeli occupation of palestine–would mean an end to the conflict. an end to palestinian violence, on the other hand, would see the bombings and evictions and ethnic cleansing continue unabated. so when someone calls for “an end to violence on both sides” remember that only one side can end ‘the violence’–all the other can do is roll over and die.
