so guys turns out that being raised by queer people alienates me from the queer experience. probably not a good thing
i genuinely have not experienced most of the “defining” moments yall talk about.
i never came out to my parents because my parents never assumed i was cishet.
i never did an “am i gay?” quiz because i knew the answer didn’t matter, really.
i never “found out” about trans people, my parent has identified as gender neutral my entire life.
i never cried or even felt any big emotions when i found out i was queer. it was just like huh. cool.
my point here is not that i’m sad about having grown up in a queer-friendly enviroment. my point is that the fact that i don’t relate to queer experiences as a queer person might imply that we still define queerness based on suffering.
i’m not saying that queer people who have suffered should stop talking about it. all i’m really saying is that if you want to define queerness based on joy instead of misery, you have to accept that queerness is not a big deal to everybody. you have to accept that not every queer person is going to relate to “queer experiences”.
At the end of the day, that ^, feels like what a lot of us have been fighting for. A world were it is no big deal. And I’m so happy someone has already gotten to experience that.
but also it is SO SO important that we make sure we are actively TRYING to reframe the queer experience as joy instead if misery because it absolutely sucks ASS that anyone who’s lived a welcoming, openly queer life feels alienated at all on the sole basis of… not… suffering…

so often i’ve seen big-ass Stupid Bullshit News about Stupid Bullshit become absolutely nothing after like 3 days. i’m so fucking tired of it because it means that nothing changes, since we’ve forgotten what we need to change.
now amazon is getting sued. awesome! this is the first time i’ve heard of it. the suit was filed presumably somewhere between a few hours and a day ago, so that’s understandable.
is this really, really going to be covered after, i dunno, three days? i honestly don’t reckon so. amazon has enough money and probably apathy to make this not as much of an important lawsuit as it should - and maybe could - be.
i would love to be reminded every day for weeks and then months that amazon is being sued for operating an illegal monopoly. i want to read every joke, hear every update, see every move that’s made until this shit is wrapped up. i don’t just want to operate on hope and, inversely, a lack of faith on this one.
i want my anger over the way things are run to be grounded in things happening right here and right now, instead of historical events that make you go “that sucks. can’t change the past! :)” and move on, because that changes nothing in the present or the future. please talk about amazon getting sued by the federal trade commission and 17 state attourneys-general for breaking antitrust laws by being an illegal monopoly.

I feel like when I say ‘relatable’ what I really mean is ‘resonant.’ I don’t want characters who I feel are like me, I want characters who have emotions so strong I can feel them through the page.
I think this is important because a lot of us forget the power of stories to make us feel things about characters who are not like us, who have experienced things that we never will. The purpose of listening to someone else’s story should not necessarily be identification, but understanding.
